PUTRAJAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the public expression of support to him by one of the country’s most well known creative consultants was nothing new, following hard-hitting remarks by his eldest child Marina Mahathir today.
“Yes, we know there are those who find the easy way to do things. They will support those who are in power,” the prime minister said when asked to respond on Marina’s criticism of Lim Kok Wing, the founder of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology.
Lim, who had once asked Mahathir to “shut up” before the latter’s return to the top post in May, today tweeted his support for the veteran politician.
“Tun Mahathir is absolutely right in saying that we just need to set our hearts and minds on achieving greater goals to be a great nation”, he said on Twitter, drawing an instant rebuke from Marina: “Do stop it @limkokwing! Where were you last year? Who was it who told Dad to shut up to ‘preserve his legacy’?”
Marina also revealed that Lim had visited her father “uninvited” during Hari Raya to apologise.
Mahathir today suggested that Lim was not the only one who conveniently voiced their support for him after he became prime minister for the second time.
“When I did not have power, they did not support me. After I came back to power again, they have voiced their support for me. There are many like that,” he told reporters when met at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).
But Mahathir said he holds no grudges against Lim.
“I am a forgiving person. I forgive you too,” he quipped.
Lim, 72, was appointed by Najib Razak to head the former prime minister’s public relations campaign, just as the 1MDB scandal was exposed.

KUALA LUMPUR – This is not an open letter but a direct retort from a daughter of a politician to an industry captain.
Twitter appears to be the medium of choice lately for public figures to hit out at other public figures. While some still opt for veiled criticism in which you have to guess who they are talking about, many today are choosing to be more direct.
Just today, there have been a few tweets courtesy of public figures in the country, offering their apparent dissatisfaction over several matters.
Number one on the list right now is Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir who took to Twitter to admonish founder of Limkokwing University Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.
Earlier this morning, Lim posted on Twitter, “Tun Mahathir is absolutely right in saying that we just need to set our hearts and minds on achieving greater goals to be a great nation.” Lim had tagged Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.
Several hours after he posted the tweet, Marina replied to it asking the philantropist to “stop it”.
She went on to claim that Lim had “snuck” into their house during Hari Raya “uninvited” to apologise, presumably to Dr Mahathir.
“Do stop it @limkokwing! Where were you last year? Who was it who told Dad to shut up to ‘preserve his legacy’? If Pakatan Harapan (PH) hadn’t won, would you have snuck into our house uninvited at Raya to apologise. Just stop it,” Marina posted.
.
Responding to another Twitter user, Marina further claimed that she could not believe her eyes when she saw “him”, most likely referring to Lim, “skulking about our kitchen”.
Lim has yet to reply to Marina’s criticism.
For context, in 2015, Dr Mahathir made a blogpost where he spoke about a friend who had warned him of losing his legacy should he persist in criticising Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was prime minister at the time.
Dr Mahathir did not mention names but described the friend as an educationist.
In the last sentence of the blogpost titled “Legacy”, Dr Mahathir used the phrase “ex-friend”.
