PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the rally would also include the participation of political parties, non-governmental organisations and non-Muslim organisations that support the Islamist party’s cause.

“God willing, PAS will organise a ‘himpunan aman raksasa’ (peaceful monster gathering) representing Muslims from various political parties and NGOs, including those who supported the bill. Wait and see,” he told a press conference at Parliament lobby here.

Although the date has yet to be confirmed, Abdul Hadi said it could be held before the next Parliament sitting in March 2017.

“We will provide an explanation nationwide, meet with all Muslim NGOs and conduct dialogues with the non-Muslims, before the gathering,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Muslim NGOs have threatened to campaign against any Muslim MP who decides to oppose PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang’s motion to amend the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

Hadi’s proposed amendments to the Act, which is also known as Act 355, seeks to give shariah courts wider powers to mete out sentences for offences laid out in the said Act

According to the group of about 70 people gathered outside the Parliament complex this morning, it is the duty of Muslim MPs to represent their constituencies and vote for the motion.

They also said the non-Muslims should not interfere in the matter as it would not in any way affect them.

“We represent 500 Muslim NGOs expressing their support for the Marang MP’s (Hadi) motion.

“We have toured nationwide, including Sabah and Sarawak, since May this year, to explain the proposed amendments to the public. Majority of them have accepted our explanation.

MIC, MCA and Gerakan insist Hadi’s bill unconstitutional

Three BN parties are adamant in opposing PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, on grounds that it was unconstitutional

KUALA LUMPUR: The Marang MP Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s private member’s bill seeking to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or better known as Act 355, will undergo slight amendments before being tabled at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.

PAS Ulama Council Information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali said the bill was expected to also contain amendments on the limit of penalties that could be imposed under the Act.

“There will be slight amendments to determine the limit of punishments, but we will only know the detail about it tomorrow,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here, Wednesday.

He said the amendments were made following the special briefing on Act 355 by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom in Parliament on Tuesday.

During the winding up of the debate on the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) Bill 2016 in the Dewan Rakyat earlier, several opposition MPs had even attempted to raise some issues on the bill moved by Abdul Hadi on May 26.

However, Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee said the matter would be discussed tomorrow.

Adjustments to Hadi’s Bill expected

He said the amendments only covered offences such as pre-marital sex, intoxication and falsely accusing a person of illicit sex (zina).

He said what would be amended were proposals to increase jail terms from three years up to 30 years; increase of fines from RM5,000 up to RM100,000 and increased caning from six to 100 lashes.

However, Khairuddin emphasised that the lashes under Syariah law differed from civil law.

“Hundred lashes under Syariah law are equivalent to one lash under civil law. One Syariah lash is more of a tap, like how you tap your children,” he explained.

WILL HE KEEP HIS WORD?

Liow threatens to quit if Hadi’s bill passes

November 24, 2016

MCA president says the party was not consulted on setting up of a parliamentary select committee to look into amendments to increase penalties for shariah courts.

PETALING JAYA: MCA president Liow Tiong Lai has insisted he will resign from his minister’s post should PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Member’s Bill on shariah law be passed in Parliament.

“My position is the same and, more importantly, I still insist that the bill should not be presented by Hadi.

“Hadi’s bill should not be supported because if any bill is to be passed in Parliament, it should be via the government,” Liow told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday, Star Online reported.

Liow, who is transport minister, said Hadi’s bill was “a blank cheque” for the shariah court to implement hudud nationwide and is against the spirit of the Federal Constitution.

On the proposed setting up of a parliamentary select committee to look into amendments to increase the penalties for shariah courts, Liow said MCA was not consulted on the matter.

He added the party will “look at the contents” of the bill first.
