Rest assured, Malaysians, picture of Dr M in accident is fake

PETALING JAYA: A picture of a car crash circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook, claiming to involve Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been confirmed to be fake.

The picture shows a car that crashed into a gate of a building that appears to be in Malaysia went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp on Wednesday (March 20).

It has been circulating with the caption “The car that was carrying PM Tun Mahathir has crashed, he and Tun Hasmah are hurt. Watch the news on TV1 tonight at 8pm”.

According to Bernama News Channel’s Facebook page, an officer of the Prime Minister confirmed that it was false.

A quick reverse-image search by The Star found that the image was posted on a Portuguese-language automotive forum in December 2018.

Fake news on Dr Mahathir’s death goes viral

Site fools many on social media with ‘news article’ stating former prime minister had died on Sunday, as Dr M is reported giving speech at forum on same night.

 

PETALING JAYA: There is no truth to the “news” story that is being widely shared online claiming that Dr Mahathir Mohamad has passed away.

The fake news story that went viral is said to be from a website “telegraph-tv.co.uk“. It was titled “BREAKING: Former Malaysia Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad Dies At 91” and datelined Sunday Nov 13, 2016.

Aside from the site’s false appearance, most on social media were quickly able to share comments confirming that the former prime minister was alive and well, having made an appearance at a forum in Shah Alam on Sunday night.

His speech at the forum held in Bukit Jelutong was widely reported by local media.

BREAKING: Former Malaysia Prime Minister Tun Mahathir Mohamad Dies At 91

Former Malaysia Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir Mohamad has today been pronounced dead after a short illness.

Tun Mahathir who had been sick for a while passed on in the early hours of Monday November 14 2016 at whiles receiving treatment in Germany.

The news of his death was confirmed by his ex-wife Siti Hasmah whiles speaking to our reporter.

”He complained of heart pains this dawn adn was quickly rushed to th hospital yet Mahathir couldn’t make it”.

‘’You will forever be in our hearts. You came into our life for a reason and today you are gone’’ the wife said.

Tun Mahathir who originally was a physician served the people Malaysia as the 4th prime minister from the year 1981 to 2003 making him the longest-serving holder of that office.

The ex-prime minister became active in the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia’s largest political party, before entering Parliament in 1964.

He served one term before losing his seat, subsequently falling out with the then Prime Minister.

He left behind a wife and 7 children.
