Rafizi Ramli is going for the PKR Deputy President post: Gunning down Azmin Ali?

https://twitter.com/gst183/status/1023854471007223808

PETALING JAYA, July 30 — The knives are out and everything is out in the open as Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) election reveals the depth of factionism within the party.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is so far the only candidate for the post of president, a position currently held by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail.

Anwar, however, did not make any mention of who he favours for his deputy or the four vice-presidents. This created a free-for-all scramble particularly among those who think they are close to Anwar jumping on to Anwar’s bandwagon.

The focus of the contest is on deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali who is being challenged by vice-president Rafizi Ramli, an old time political foe who is appealing his jail sentence over the Banking Act.

The party poll is on September 14 and Sunday’s nominations will be for all posts — president, deputy president, four vice-presidents and 20 supreme council members — which also includes division and branch levels.

This election is the first after GE14 and the first with Anwar; from the looks of it, this is going to be a hard-fought election.

Distribution (or the lack) of rewards after the May 9 victory seems to have created disappointment and resentment among party members at various levels.

And Rafizi is no exception. Well-known for exposing the wrongdoings of the previous administration, he was disqualified from being fielded as a candidate in the last general election because of a court conviction which he is appealing.

Unfortunately for him, when Pakatan Harapan (PH) won in his absence, rewards distributed did not include him which probably spurred him to go for a higher position in the party hierarchy.

The vice-president is seen as Anwar’s man whom grassroots may not want to push aside in the leadership line-up as they see him as a potential leader who can lead the party.

However, in this election, the complication arises as he and Azmin are not only seen as “political enemies” but both are Anwar loyalists.

While Azmin is definitely a confirmed Anwar man — since the latter was Finance Minister in the BN days — Rafizi is closer to Wan Azizah and Nurul Izzah.

What’s more, Azmin is now a Cabinet minister who had, before his new appointment, proven his management skills in governing Selangor and managing the party alongside Wan Azizah as president.
.

Whether Nurul Izzah is truly in Rafizi’s camp which gives the impression that Anwar gave his blessing for the challenge is true or false, Azmin now has a problem on his hand: a small rebellion to unseat him. Nothing which Azmin is unaccustomed to in his long political career.

PEMILIHAN KEPIMPINAN KEADILAN 2018

27 July 2018

PETALING JAYA, July 27 — Rafizi Ramli said today that winning or losing the PKR deputy presidential race was not the main factor in his decision to run, but that it was about defending the party’s reformist ideals.

The contender for the PKR deputy presidency said he was not the best among the current leadership, noting that some were veteran leaders, greater, more organised, or even more diligent.

“But this time, being entrusted to bring forth reform after Keadilan succeeded in forming the government with other PH (Pakatan Harapan) members is my burden to carry,” Rafizi said in a statement today.

“I know that this is a heavy burden because it’s not like I have government positions or money. Winning or losing is not the main consideration for me, but the responsibility to defend the reformist ideals that gave birth to Keadilan must be held by someone.”
.
Rafizi, who is currently PKR vice-president, said he was only relying on the support of grassroots members whose lives did not change after the 14th general election because he was “just like them”.

He said he was “only a reformer who wants to retain the idealism that plunged us into politics 20 years ago.”

Rafizi will be going up against Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who is economic affairs minister, if the latter defends the deputy presidency.

Rafizi wins appeal against ‘insulting Umno members’ conviction

Geraldine Tong

The High Court in Shah Alam has set aside PKR Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli’s conviction for allegedly insulting Umno members in an interview three years ago, following an appeal.

Justice Ghazali Cha found the conviction under Section 504 of the Penal Code to be “unsustainable”.

Section 504 deals with the offence of intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.

The judge found that the prosecution had failed to prove intent, which he said was a necessary ingredient of the offence.

“There were (also) no actions that happened to breach the peace… a police report was lodged only by Umno Selangor a few days later,” the judge said in reading out his decision today.

Rafizi had previously been convicted and fined RM1,800 for this offence at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court.

The prosecution had then appealed to enhance the sentencing while Rafizi appealed against the conviction.

In overturning the conviction, the judge set aside the prosecution’s appeal.

Rafizi’s lawyer Gobind Singh Deo also requested for a refund of the RM1,800 fine which Rafizi had already paid, which the judge acquiesced with.

prosecuting = “another nail in the coffin of government transparency & accountability”

Shared publicly  –  Yesterday 12:50 PM

Statement attributable to Phil Robertson, Deputy Director of the Asia Division, Human Rights Watch on the charging of MP Rafizi Ramli under OSA and criminal defamation charges

“It’s shocking that the Malaysia government is prosecuting Rafizi Ramli for revealing a page of this year’s Auditor General’s report, which contains information on government performance that should be made publicly available and debated in Parliament rather than locked away under the Official Secrets Act. By criminalizing Rafizi’s act, the Malaysia government is putting another nail in the coffin of government transparency and accountability, and clearly violating his Rafizi’s rights. Malaysia needs to revise the Official Secrets Act to bring in into compliance with international human rights standards, and cease using this law to intimidate and persecute those demanding the government take responsibility for its actions.”
