Junior Cycling Malaysia (JCM): Why were the prizes so tiny?

WHY WERE THE PRIZES SO SMALL?

Some suggest that it was because there was no money left. With RM107 million siphoned away, they say, what do you expect?

allocation is for whole programme:

PETALING JAYA: The RM2 million allocated to the Junior Cycling Malaysia is for funding of its whole programme, stressed Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

He was responding to a blog which highlighted the minimal RM30 prize, as shown on the mock cheques presented to winners who won a JCM competition in Serdang recently. The claim went viral in the social media.

Khairy said the RM2 million was for competitions including 16 races nationwide, equipment and international exposure for potential champions.

“Don’t misunderstand. The allocation is not for Serdang alone, it is for the whole programme,” he told reporters after launching the ‘Kupas Buku’ programme here today.

He said the competition would be continued, with prizes in the form of sports equipment vouchers and medals.

“All this while, the competition had not offered any cash prize. So this will not become an issue or have an impact on the programme; in fact after the ‘mock check’ issue, more people will be aware of JCM,” he said.

In response to the negative comments received by the JCM on social media, Jamaluddin replied, “We want them to grow up with the right values and attitude. Yes, money is important and if they do well in sports, they will be financially rewarded later on but let’s not spoil them from when they are young. Let them want to win for the sake of winning, to be the best not because of money but because of determination and honour.”

He also added that the JCM felt that it was more important for children to have the interest, the desire to win, and experience of participation.
