KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) politicians have disagreed with PAS’s claim that yesterday’s rally against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) drew poor response from the public.
According to party information chief Khalid Samad, more than 10,000 attended the event, although he admitted to not having the exact figures.
“Based on our observation, Dataran Merdeka was packed. I don’t have exact figures, but I believe that more than 10,000 people were there,” he was quoted saying in The Star Online.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, on the other hand, pointed out that the party only had a week to mobilise supporters for the rally.
As such, he said, the turnout met the party’s expectations.
“We only had one week to organise the rally, so the turnout was expected. Unlike Bersih, they had six months to do it. So the (turnout at the) protest yesterday was satisfactory,” he was quoted saying in the same report.
Khalid added that the crowd may have appeared smaller because many may not have stayed on throughout the rally from noon until 5.30pm due to the afternoon heat.
He said, however, that the gathering held in conjunction with the one-year rollout of the consumption tax system had succeeded in proving a point.

Low Chinese turnout at rally affects T-shirt business #MansuhGST #UndurNajib https://shar.es/1YQgXI via @sharethis

KUALA LUMPUR: Street protests are prime opportunities for enterprising businessmen to make a quick buck (or possibly two thousand ringgit), as the anti-GST rally here yesterday proved.
T-shirt sellers and drink vendors thronged the area outside Dataran Merdeka today along with the thousands of protesters.
Many were selling T-shirts emblazoned with “Mansuh GST” (Abolish GST) and other slogans.
“I’ve sold over two hundred T-shirts in the past few hours,” said a seller who only wanted to be known as Salleh.
He made over RM2000, with each T-shirt selling for RM10.
However, other sellers complained that the surprisingly low turnout of Chinese protesters at the rally affected sales.
“Usually it’s the Chinese who buy our vuvuzelas,” another seller, who did not wish to be named, said.
“Business is really slow today. Maybe because they’re observing Cheng Beng,” he said, referring to the Chinese occasion in which families visit the graves of their deceased relatives.

Rally-goer arrested for sticking Najib caricature on police car

…
The anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rally in Kuala Lumpur today would have concluded with no untoward incident at all, had it not been for just one rally-goer.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh confirmed that a participant was detained by police under Section 504 of the Penal Code.
The section deals with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
Activist Muhammad Zhafran Muhammad Zuhdi was detained after he stuck a caricature of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on a police car.
The 24-year-old is currently detained at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
“He was walking around and when the patrol car came. He put the caricature of Najib with whatever words on it; blatantly stuck it on the car. That’s just not proper.
“It is the only case (of detention). Otherwise, everything was peaceful; no problem at all,” said Amar to Malaysiakin

1,500 brave scorching heat to protest GST
Despite the scorching heat, more than 1,500 people thronged the streets from the Sogo shopping complex to Dataran Merdeka, participating in the anti-Goods and Services Tax (GST) rally.
The rally, which also demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, witnessed a carnival-like atmosphere, with people mostly in black T-shirts walking along carrying placards showcasing their disagreement against the taxation system and the premier.
Stalls selling anti-GST and ‘Undur Najib’ merchandise lined the streets, with some also taking the opportunity to sell bottled water and snacks.
Chanting slogans like ‘Mansuh GST’ and even ‘Najib pui!’, the rally also took a different direction with chants of ‘Bebas Anwar’ and ‘Reformasi’ amidst the blare of vuvuzelas.
Rally-goers are currently milling in front of Dataran Merdeka as access to it has been blocked by police.
