Emulating their mentor, reformasi veterans pledge support for Dr Mahathir
.

Known as Otai Reformis 1998, those who took to the streets against Dr Mahathir Mohamad after he sacked his then number two Anwar Ibrahim, have now pledged their support for the former premier.
In an ironic twist of fate, Mahathir now leads the opposition pact Pakatan Harapan with Anwar as its de facto leader.
Otai Reformis’ new chairperson Khairul Annuar Othman announced their support for Mahathir during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
The movement’s previous chairperson Saari Sungib and secretary Abdul Razak Ismail quit Otai Reformis last June in protest of Mahathir joining Harapan.
However, Khairul said Otai Reformasi is willing to accept Mahathir because Anwar has buried the hatchet and done so himself.
“On the basis that Anwar, who is the mentor of Otai Reformis, who started the reformasi movement, accepting Mahathir, so we accept Mahathir as well,” he added.
Khairul also said Otai Reformis is in the process of gathering its members nationwide in order to move forward.
He also urged all quarters to attend the “Tangkap Jho Low, Selamatkan Malaysia (Arrest Jhow Low, Save Malaysia)” gathering on Saturday.

Reformasi is a movement led by jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to press for political reforms and for the ouster of then prime minister Mahathir.
It was formed following Anwar’s dramatic sacking from the cabinet in September 1998, after a fallout with Mahathir.
The Otai Reformis group was formed during the Reformasi movement after the Anwar sacking. It became very active again after Dr Mahathir crossed over to Pakatan.
They had booed and jeered at Dr Mahathir when he addressed them at a convention in Shah Alam earlier this year.

‘Otai Reformasi’ ex-chief: I’ll not greet nor kiss Dr M, but he is crucial
Saari Sungib, who resigned as chairperson of Otai Reformasi 1998, has explained his support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad leading the Pakatan Harapan coalition.
The Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) Selangor deputy chief said he made this stand in the name of the coalition and not because he supported the former premier.
“I am trying to be professional and not emotional towards Mahathir. I will limit my support for him.
“I will not salam-salam (greet him), I will not kiss Mahathir,” the Hulu Kelang assemblyperson told Malaysiakini.
Saari said he is with Mahathir because the latter is crucial with regard to the aim of removing Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and BN from power.
“I cannot force people (to accept Mahathir). But for me, the matter (concerning Mahathir) has been discussed in the party and I respect the party’s decision. That is my level,” he added.
Yesterday, Otai Reformasi 1998 revealed that Saari and the movement’s secretary Abdul Razak Ismail had resigned.
This followed a meeting where the movement decided to oppose Mahathir’s leadership of Harapan.

‘Otai Reformasi’ opposes Mahathir’s leadership, chairperson resigns
A pro-reformasi group has expressed opposition to Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership of Pakatan Harapan and his possible appointment as prime minister, senior minister or adviser if the coalition captures federal power.
Otai Reformasi 1998 also demanded that Harapan includes a pledge in its election manifesto to form a peace and justice commission to look into the allegations against the former prime minister.
The group also agreed that its members who have positions in Pakatan Harapan parties will relinquish their posts in Otai Reformasi.
“Following this decision, chairperson of Otai Reformasi, Saari Sungib, has resigned,” reads a media statement from the movement that was issued this afternoon.
Saari is also Selangor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy chairperson and Hulu Kelang assemblyperson.
The statement also revealed that Otai Reformasi secretary Abdul Razak Ismail has also resigned from the movement.
According to the statement, Abdul Razak, who is said to disagree with Mahathir joining Harapan, has decided to contest against Harapan parties in the next general election, under the Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) ticket.

Hardcore Anwar supporters unable to accept Dr M
PETALING JAYA: A rift has formed in the Otai Reformis group of hardcore supporters of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, over Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership of Pakatan Harapan.
The head of the group Saari Sungib, who is also Hulu Kelang assemblyman, has called for an emergency meeting this Sunday in an attempt to alleviate the rift before it worsens.
It is understood that the group’s secretary Razak Ismail has threatened to resign and join Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).
Razak, who is upset with the Anwar family for allowing Dr Mahathir to take over, is said to be planning to contest against Pakatan under the PSM ticket in the general election.
The theme of this Sunday’s meeting is “Otai Refomis di simpangan” (Otai Reformis at the crossroads) and Saari said he may also offer to resign if the members feel that the group has lost its way.
Saari, who is also a central committee member of Amanah, said some in the group have accepted that Pakatan has to cooperate with Dr Mahathir in order to take on Barisan Nasional.
But the hardliners see it as a betrayal to their cause. They have demanded that Dr Mahathir apologise to Anwar, his family and the Otai Reformis group to show that he is sincere.
This group still regard the newly installed Pakatan chairman as the “syaitan” (Satan) and mother of all Pharoahs because they often compare his sacking and imprisonment of Anwar to the cruelty of the Pharoahs.

‘Dr Mahathir is not a reformist,’ declare reformasi diehards
The former prime minister’s plea for the reformists to let bygones be bygones proves unsuccessful
SHAH ALAM: Dr Mahathir Mohamad may have gone out of his way to extend an olive branch to his former critics, the reformasi diehards, by coming to their gathering today.
But his plea for the reformists to let bygones be bygones, appeared to be unsuccessful as his name was included in their resolutions proposed at the “Konvensyen Reformis” here this afternoon.
Resolution No. 6 states that Mahathir is not a reformist.
“And this convention is not a forum requesting for his views on the reformation agenda,” said the reformists, right before the event concluded.
Nine resolutions were proposed. Included was the statement that the “spirit and intellectualism of the 1998 reformists are still fresh” and have become an inspiration for youths.

Dr M to baying crowd: Come after me after we get rid of Najib
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told a rather hostile crowd at a Reformasi event today that they could take action against him after they have worked together to win the next election.
“Can we unite and fight to get rid of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak? That is the main thing.
“After that, (if you) want to take action against me, go ahead, I do not mind,” Mahathir said during his speech at the Konvesyen Reformis in Shah Alam today.
This appeared to have won over the 300-strong crowd, comprising mostly of supporters of the 1998 Reformasi movement.
One man at the front of the hall howled with laughter and gave Mahathir two thumbs-up. “I salute you!” he shouted.
The Bersatu chairperson had made a surprise appearance at the Reformasi event where he was greeted with shouts of “Reformasi” (Reformation), “Bebas Anwar” (Free Anwar) and “Firaun” (Pharaoh).
Before his arrival, the anti-Mahathir sentiment was palpable, especially whenever the former premier’s name was mentioned by speakers on the podium.

Let bygones be bygones, Mahathir tells reformasi diehards
SHAH ALAM: The man at the centre of angry street protests in Kuala Lumpur some two decades ago today addressed a gathering of his former critics, urging them to let bygones be bygones.
“Can we let go of the past?” Dr Mahathir Mohamad asked some 200 people gathered at a convention of “reformasi” supporters here today.
Reformasi is the movement led by jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to press for political reforms and for the ouster of then prime minister Mahathir, following his dramatic sacking from the Cabinet in September 1998 after a fallout with Mahathir.
It triggered some of the largest anti-government protests in Malaysia since independence, with scores of protesters arrested during their weekend rallies in Kuala Lumpur.
“That is why I came here today,” the former prime minister told the crowd today.
His plea received mixed response, with some heard shouting: “No! 18 years Tun!”
It is understood that Mahathir’s speech was not part of today’s programme. Saari Sungib, who leads a group of former reformasi activists called Otai Reformis, told news portal Malaysiakini that the former leader himself had made a request to attend the event.
Amid chants of “Reformasi” and “Bebas Anwar” (Free Anwar), Mahathir admitted that not everyone was his fan.
“I know I am not someone who is liked by everyone,” he said, followed by murmurs of “That’s true” from the crowd.
But the 91-year-old braved the crowds, and called for unity to face the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
“You can say what you want. You can call me Mahafiraun if you like,” he said, referring to a derogatory title given to him by critics.
“But like it or not, if we don’t unite, our hope to see a new government will fail,” said Mahathir, who now chairs Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).
He said the focus now should be to topple the BN government.
“After that, if you want actions to be taken against me, go ahead. Because as long as we have no power, these struggles of ours will not succeed.
“There’s no use fighting if we don’t know how to organise ourselves in order to make our goals a success.
“If we really want reformation, win the elections first,” he added.

Mahathir gets heckled at reformasi event
Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s surprise appearance at the Reformis Malaysia convention drew cheers and jeers.
The 91-year-old was not listed in the itinerary, but he arrived in the midst of the first panel session of the convention and inadvertently interrupted the panel moderator’s speech.
The crowd, realising who had just entered the hall, immediately began shouting “Reformasi” (Reformation) and “Bebas Anwar” (Free Anwar), with a few shouts of “Firaun” (Pharoah).
The panel moderator managed to placate the crowd into calming down.
.
The Reformasi movement, started by Anwar after he was sacked, began in 1998 as a campaign calling for Mahathir’s resignation and the end of corruption in government.
Earlier in the convention, attended by many of the Reformasi movement supporters, a number of attendees had expressed anti-Mahathir sentiment in response to other speeches which mentioned Mahathir.

Zaid’s ‘Save M’sia’ proposals – cease personal attacks, rope in the rich
Published 13 Apr 2016
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim wants to end the hostilities between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters and loved ones.
Apart from this, he is also seeking support from the “wealthy class” such as former finance minister Daim Zainuddin to help what is dubbed as the ‘Save Malaysia’ movement.
Zaid said he would be proposing these plans to Mahathir soon.
“There will be no more negative remarks about Anwar by movement leaders, including Mahathir.
“In fact, there will be no personal attacks of any kind, including from Anwar’s supporters and loved ones against Mahathir. Enough is enough,” he wrote on his blog today.
Zaid admitted that the movement was still grappling with sending the message of unity.
“In fact, we are inundated with acrimonious noises from the top leaders. Only yesterday, PKR’s Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was scathing about how she believed the ‘Save Malaysia’ movement is Mahathir’s personal agenda.
“She also blamed him for attacking her husband’s character and personality.”
Zaid added that the movement must treat everyone who signed the Citizens’ Declaration with respect, especially if they are leaders of their respective political parties.
“We are not progressive enough for reforms if we are still allergic to Lim Kit Siang,” he said.

Segelintir penyokong turut menjerit meminta Mahathir supaya berhenti.
– FMT
