Anwar’s letter was his personal opinion, says Mahathir

May 19, 2016

The letter by Anwar Ibrahim will not affect the Citizens’ Declaration, says former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

SUBANG JAYA: Former Umno President and Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today reluctantly answered questions about the letter his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim wrote to PKR in which he allegedly warned the party to be wary of the Citizens’ Declaration.

Mahathir brushed off the question, saying it would not affect the declaration which the “Save Malaysia” movement claimed has garnered over 1.2 million signatures.

“That is his (Anwar) opinion; he is entitled to it,” he told reporters after attending a dialogue at the Holiday Villa Hotels and Suites here today.

The eight-page handwritten letter, penned by Anwar from his Sungai Buloh cell, also called Mahathir as well as former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin as the “father of crony-capitalism.”

However, Mahathir merely dismissed the question from reporters, saying: “That is an old story. I don’t want to repeat it.”

Waspada dengan Tun Mahathir – Wan Azizah Selanjutnya di

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has reminded opposition party leaders to be wary of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s agenda.

“Be wary, that is all,” she said in brief to reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.

She was commenting on the contents of a letter by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who requested opposition leaders to exercise caution on the agenda by the former prime minister in his declaration.

Wan Azizah, however, described the letter by her husband as the party’s internal issue.

“That is an internal matter,” she said.

PKR parliamentary chief whip Datuk Johari Abdul, on the other hand, said the PKR stand was clear, that the party did not support the Mahathir declaration.

“But that is up to any individual, whether or not to support the declaration promoted by Dr Mahathir.

“He (Anwar) said if the declaration led to reformation agenda, it was okay. But if there was none (reformation agenda), then it has to be included so that the real reformation agenda would not be left out,” he said.

Debate rages over Citizens’ Declaration initiative

PSM’s Arutchelvan says Declaration has broken up Pakatan Harapan, as arguments between pro-opposition allies escalate at forum.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Citizens’ Declaration, formed by those united against Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration saw supporters splitting hairs with pro-opposition allies over the initiative at a forum last night.

It all began when Badrul Hisham Shaharin read an excerpt from a letter by former Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

“Every struggle will see the rise of traitors and sycophants. Do not be indignant, brothers. Every struggle will bring us against those afraid to face the waves. Do not be disappointed,” Badrul read.

“Our focus is on toppling Umno and Barisan Nasional,” he continued.

This was immediately greeted with loud shouts of “Reformasi” by a group of people at the event who were against the Declaration.

The shouts continued, even drowning out repeated explanations by Amanah lawmaker Khalid Samad, who was a panelist at the event, that the Citizens’ Declaration will not stop efforts to topple the current administration.

The forum saw Khalid accompanied by former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan and former Umno Batu Kawan vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, in supporting the Declaration.

Badrul Hisham, or Chegubard, was speaking against the Declaration together with former Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) secretary-general S Arutchelvan and lawyer Haris Ibrahim.

Anwar’sletter of caution’ on citizens declaration internal matter, says Wan Azizah

Dr Wan Azizah, who is PKR president, has described the letter as an “an internal issue raised by Datuk Seri.”

“It’s an internal matter and he was just asking them to be careful,” she told reporters at Parliament lobby.

The party whip, Datuk Johari Abdul, said it was left to the “individual discretion” of party members whether they were supportive of the declaration.

He said some leaders have always been against Dr Mahathir since the time he was prime minister and they have refrained from signing the declaration.

“They have been there since PKR started and reformasi. They saw Tun Mahathir as the prime minister and they still cannot get over that, so they stayed away from supporting it.

“That’s okay, there are others who support it as well,” he said.

‘Anwar cautioned us on Dr M, did not reject declaration’

Jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim did not tell his supporters to reject the Citizens’ Declaration, PKR Youth deputy chief Dr Afif Bahardin said today.

Anwar merely said to be cautious about Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he was very familiar with the former prime minister’s character, Afif added.

Still, Afif viewed Anwar’s remarks as “fair and a good advice” as the former deputy prime minister had previously served under Mahathir for 16 years, from 1982, until he was sacked from his post in 1998.

That letter from Anwar Ibrahim finally explains why Wan Azizah did not join the Save Malaysia and Deklarasi Rakyat movement.

Sayu juga baca warkah pak Anwar. kalian yang bodoh dan angkuh pergilah menari ikut rentak Mahathir. Selamat malam.

Dont forget that it was DrM who sacked Anwar as DPM! Like Najib sacked Moohiding.

fmtoday: PKR offers differing statements over Anwar’s letter via sharethis

PETALING JAYA: PKR leaders have given conflicting statements regarding a letter supposedly written by jailed de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim warning about the dangers of teaming up with former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The letter, which was first published by Penang PKR Youth on its Facebook page, expresses concerns over the Citizens’ Declaration which has “dragged our leaders and apparatuses to be in cahoots with Tun M (Mahathir) and Daim (former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin).”

“The letter is authentic. I do not wish to comment further. Let the people read and make their own evaluations,” PKR Secretary-General Rafizi Ramli told Malaysiakini.

On the other hand, the news portal said PKR Vice-President Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin had dismissed the letter when met in Parliament earlier today.

He said Anwar had always been consistent in his support for the declaration and its objectives.

“The issue of him regretting his support for the declaration does not arise at all. Anwar has been consistent in his support for the declaration and its objectives.”

PKR leaders at odds over ’s letter on perils of tangoing with Dr Mahathir

PKR leaders offered contradicting claims with regard to a letter purportedly penned by their jailed leader Anwar Ibrahim on the Citizens’ Declaration, and the danger in tangoing with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

According to vice-president and secretary-general Rafizi Ramli, the letter is genuine.

“The letter is authentic. I do not wish to comment further. Let the people read and make their own evaluation,” he told Malaysiakini.

Earlier, PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin dismissed the letter, adding that Anwar has remained consistent in his support for the declaration and its objectives.

“The issue of him regretting (supporting the declaration) does not arise at all. Anwar has been consistent from the beginning that it must be supported.

“Anwar has many letters. We don’t know which letter that was meant by this unnamed PKR Youth,” he told reporters in Parliament.
