GHAH slams sedition probe on those putting up ‘Free Anwar’ banners
.

Gerakan Hapus Akta Hasutan (GHAH) has condemned the investigation under the Sedition Act 1948 against three men for putting up ‘Free Anwar’ banners in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
The three men were arrested on Friday when they were trying to put up the banners, which were meant to promote a rally for jailed de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim on Jan 9.
GHAH coordinator Amir Abd Hadi noted that police had acted on complaints that the banners were supposedly seditious.
“GHAH urges the authorities to stop using the act based on mere assumptions.
“This archaic act should be abolished and should not be used against Malaysians on a whim to silence critics and perpetuate the government’s power,” he said.
Amir said this was not the first time the authorities had acted as such, with artists and opposition politicians targeted.
“The Sedition Act continues to be used to silence the people in the name of national security,” he said.

Police take down ‘Free Anwar’ billboards in Ampang
Police have taken down at least three billboards campaigning for the release of jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, in Ampang.
Pictures uploaded by social media users show the top layer of a billboard at Jalan Kolam Ayer Lama featuring Anwar being taken down by uniformed personnel.
The same was done to the billboards at Ampang Waterfront on Jalan Ampang and near the Ampang Point shopping mall.
Confirming this, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin said the removal was to provoke an emotional response from the Selangor government.
“IGP Khalid Abu Bakar has overstepped his boundaries and we will not keep quiet,” the PKR Wanita chief said in a statement.
“He needs to stick to his job description and not meddle in the affairs of the municipal council,” she added.

IGP says Free Anwar billboards should be taken down
Khalid Abu Bakar urges local councils to take action, says the posters could be regarded as seditious.
KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has called on local authorities in Selangor to take down any Free Anwar billboards in their areas.
Khalid said on his Twitter account that the billboards could be deemed seditious and intended to confuse the people.
He said the words on the billboards describing former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim as “Tahanan Politik” (political prisoner) could be regarded as seditious.
He urged local authorities concerned to bring down the billboards.

Police record statements of ‘burn Anwar posters’ protesters

AMPANG JAYA: Police have recorded statements from people involved in the “Jom Bakar Papan Iklan Selamatkan Anwar (Let’s Burn the Save Anwar Billboards)” demonstration held in Ampang on Wednesday.
District police chief Asst Comm Hamzah Alias said they were being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to notify the police prior to the demonstration, which was led by Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos .
During the demonstration, Jamal had warned the Selangor government to remove all the billboards or he would burn them.
“There are hundreds of Anwar billboards in Subang, Klang, Ampang and Damansara, which can cost over a million ringgit.
“We want to know who has the contract to put them up and from where they are getting the funds,” Jamal said.

Anwar billboard not torched, covered with ‘sodomist’ banner

…
Threats by an Umno-friendly group to torch a billboard calling for jailed PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim to be freed have fizzled out.
Instead, the group led by Sungai Besar Umno division leader Jamal Md Yunos hung a two-metre banner, with graphic details on sodomy, over the billboard.
“Anwar Ibrahim is a sodomist who has been convicted. This means he had inserted his penis into the anus of a man without consent,” read the banner.
The banner was hung over the words ‘Save Anwar’ under the former opposition leader’s picture on the billboard, located at a busy intersection near the Ampang Point shopping mall.
Jamal was backed by a group of about 80 men, some who appeared to be teenagers, dressed in red T-shirts and carrying two ladders.
The group arrived at the intersection at about 3.15pm.
A fracas broke out when PKR MP Tian Chua’s aide Rozan Azen Mat Rasip told the group to stop. Police personnel at the scene controlled the situation.
Rozan, who was wearing a T-shirt which said ‘Anwar For Nobel Peace Prize’, later claimed that he was punched.
Earlier, the Bebas Anwar group in a statement warned Jamal he could face arson charges if he went ahead with plans to torch the billboard.

Explain about-turn on political advertising, #Selangor told https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/331675 @mpkotabelud @AzminAli

Urban Wellbeing, Housing, and Local Government Minister Rahman Dahlan has demanded an explanation from the Selangor government over the #BebasAnwar signboards erected in several districts in the state.
He said that in the past, former executive councillor in charge of local government, Ronnie Liu, had disallowed the erection of signboards portraying political messages in the state.
“We have heard admonishments from the Selangor local government executive councillor (Liu) at one time saying that he would not allow local councils to put up statements or banners with political messages.”
“I want to remind what (Liu) had once said – that all state local councils (must) refrain from using their facilities for political purposes,” said Rahman.
…
Yesterday, Umno Youth executive council member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah lodged a police report against Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali for purportedly allowing the erection of the #BebasAnwar signboards in several districts in the state.
On Monday, Selangor Umno had lodged a police report on the same matter, stating that the erection of the signboards was in contempt of the court decision which saw ex-opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim sent to prison.

Selangor defends plastering Anwar’s face on the state billboards
The erection of several billboards in the state urging that former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim be freed from prison has been defended by the political secretary to the Selangor menteri besar, Shuhaimi Shafiei.
…
Dismissing criticism the billboards were an abuse of power, Suhaimi said the PKR party logo on the billboards merely signified the sponsor of the campaign.
He also deflected Umno’s criticism, stating that the Selangor government has not made an issue of billboards that carry the BN logo in the state.
“The state government has never, through the local councils, blocked any BN billboard, like those in Sabah Bernam.
“The state government believes in freedom of information and defends that right,” he said.

Furore over Anwar billboard in Port Klang http://www.nst.com.my/news/2016/02/129168/furore-over-anwar-billboard-port-klang …

KLANG: Umno Klang has demanded that an investigation be carried out on the installation of a billboard which bears the image of the imprisoned Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Its information chief Wan Mohamad Yusoff Wan Abdullah questioned how the Klang Municipal Council allowed a politically driven billboard to be erected in the town of Port Klang.
The billboard which carries a picture of Anwar with the words ‘Bebas Rakyat, Bebas Anwar’ was found along Persiaran Raja Muda Musa and could have been there for the past one month.
“I was told that the same billboard can also be found in Subang Jaya. The billboard shows that PKR and the Selangor state government is mocking the country’s judiciary system which found Anwar guilty of sodomy by five judges. It should be taken down immediately,” said Yusoff.
Yusoff added that he had not contacted MPK to ask why the billboard was allowed to be put up as it was pointless because the local authority was under the PKR-led government.
Yusoff said this today after lodging a report at the Klang district police headquarters on the distribution of the Selangor state government’s weekly mouthpiece in a mosque in Kampung Jawa.

#AWANInews Selangor UMNO wants probe into ‘free Anwar‘ billboards http://english.astroawani.com/malaysia-news/selangor-umno-wants-probe-free-anwar-billboards-95635 …

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor UMNO has called for an investigation of local authorities that have allowed #Bebas Anwar (#Free Anwar) billboards to be put up in several places in the state.
Its Information Chief, Datuk Zein Isma Ismail (rpt) Zein Isma Ismail, said the display challenged the verdict of the courts.
“Everybody knows that he (Anwar) is in jail for the wrong he did to Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He is not a political prisoner,” he said.
…
“How can the Selangor local authorities approve the billboards? This is a serious matter. The billboards even carry the PKR logo,” he told the media after he and more than 20 other Selangor UMNO members lodged a report at the Sungai Buloh District Police headquarters.
Zein Isma, who is Subang UMNO Division chief, said the billboards were found in several areas in the state, including Ampang Jaya, Kepong and Rawang.
He called on the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and other relevant agencies to investigate the matter.
“Their (the Selangor government’s) action is unacceptable. They are misusing the people’s money,” he said.
