BENTONG: Police arrested a 35-year-old lorry driver for allegedly plowing his vehicle through the Bentong toll plaza to get on to the Karak Highway.

At about 1pm, a group of lorry drivers who have been stuck on the highway since Wednesday insisted on continuing their journey, no matter what the consequences.

District police chief Superintendent Mohamad Mansor Mohd Nor said at about 2.15pm, the driver ignored police orders and crashed through the toll plaza.

“About 10 minutes later, we arrested the lorry driver under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing civil servants in conducting their duty,” he said.

Upon questioning, the man said he was tired of waiting and wanted to use the highway in order to deliver the lorry’s load.

It is learnt that the lorry was carrying sand.

Pahang MB admits to logging activities taking place near landslide area

Embedded image permalink

Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob does not deny that there are logging activities taking place near Kilometre 52.4 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway where a landslide occurred yesterday.

However, he rapped certain quarters, including the media, for spreading false information that the landslide occurred as a result of uncontrolled logging activities in Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik.

“I do not deny that there are some logging activities taking place there, but it is quite far, or maybe about 1.2km from the scene.

“The logging activity is not for anybody’s greed, it is to facilitate the Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s cable supply project, but it has been suspended for four months now due to protest from local residents.”

Bomba: Karak landslide caused by overflow at water catchment

Embedded image permalink

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — The landslide that created massive congestion on both sides of the Karak highway yesterday occurred because a nearby water catchment overflowed and not because of logging activities, according to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) today.

According to The Star Online, the department’s deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Soiman Jahid confirmed this during a briefing at the site.

He also reportedly said that heavy rains over the past few days caused the catchment to overflow and pick up sediment, turning it into the mudslide that blanketed part of the busy expressway.

“The overflow also picked up garbage, logs and large rocks from the hill,” he was quoted saying.

He said all the victims were rescued including a mother who was still in the confinement period and were being sheltered at the mosque in Lentang for the time being. “Twelve firemen from Bentong, Karak and Genting Highlands were rushed to the scene to save the victims who were stuck in the quarters, soon after we receive a call at 6.30 pm.

Are you already on the highway?

Follow these instructions on how to get out of the stretch:

– Motorists from Kuantan are advised to use an alternative route to the Bentong exit.

– Those travelling from Kuala Lumpur are advised to follow the Genting Sempah exit.

– Motorists from Kuala Lumpur can make a U-turn at KM29.3.3 while those from Kuantan can exit Karak via Bahau.

– Do not use the emergency lanes, which are reserved for emergency vehicles. This can hinder the passage of rescue equipment and personnel.

Karak Highway traffic diverted through Bahau due to landslide

PETALING JAYA: Drivers travelling between Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan will be diverted to through Bahau as the Karak Highway has been blocked by a landslide that is blocking all lanes in both directions.

“The only route that people from the east coast can come into KL is via Bahau,” said Priscilla Patrick, head of traffic from the Star Radio Media Group.

Drivers coming from the east coast will have to exit off at Gambang, head to Muadzam Shah, then to Bahau, and then through Kuala Pilah to come back up to Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) tweeted that drivers coming from Kuala Lumpur can make a U-turn at KM29.3 of the highway, while those coming from Kuantan to exit the highway and take Jalan Bahau instead.

“Bentong police confirmed a lot of trees have come crashing from that forest at Lentang, on the trunk roads and on this road as well,” said Priscilla.

“So the access between KL and the east coast and the Karak highway is a no go,” she added.

According to the article, unnamed officials also informed Star Radio Media Group’s head of traffic, Priscilla Patrick, that traffic along the highway was now at a standstill, causing a 3km-tailback headed to Kuala Lumpur and 1km in the opposite direction.

“I just spoke to officials; there are some cars that are buried in this landslide, so it’s not looking good. It’s not going to clear up till midnight, I think it’s going to go on till morning,” Patrick was quoted as saying in the report.
