KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 —Ten more Bersih 4 supporters were arrested in Malacca City today for refusing to heed a police warning to break up their gathering at the foot of the old clock tower near the historic Stadhuys building, state police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said today.
Chuah told Malay Mail Online when contacted that the 10 were arrested under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.
“Basically they were gathering at the clock tower and they had not given any notice to the police.
“When we went and asked them to disperse, most of them did, a few did not and so we arrested them under the Peaceful Assembly Act,” he said, referring to the gathering that had taken place at the popular landmark.
He said they would be investigated under Section 21 (1) of the PAA, which governs the powers of a police officer to issue an order to disperse from an assembly in various situations.
Chuah confirmed that all 10 arrested have been given access to lawyers, adding: “The lawyers are already with them. We are working closely with the Malacca Bar Association to provide them with counsel.
He also said they would be released after their statements were recorded and if routine checks showed that they are not suspected of breaching other laws.

Malacca police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye told Malay Mail Online that 12 individuals were arrested in the state last night for wearing the Bersih 4 T-shirt deemed illegal by the government.
He added that the police released the dozen after recording their statements, but confiscated the T-shirts.
Social media users had claimed up to 25 people were detained.
“It’s only 12. They were wearing the Bersih T-shirt,” Chuah said.

The 26 individuals arrested last night for allegedly wearing Bersih T-shirts have been released, Bersih’s Urgent Arrest team said today.
Tarmizi Anuwar, a member of the team, confirmed that the 25 from Malacca and one from Nilai were freed, following their arrests under the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA) 1984.
“Yes, they have all been released already,” he said, adding that they were still gathering details about the case.
In a statement late last night, the team condemned the arrests as an attempt to intimidate the public into staying away from Bersih 4, which began at 2pm.
“Bersih has successfully proven on its first day that the rally is peaceful. And we believe it will continue to be peaceful if there is no provocation from the police.
“We urge Malaysians to attend the Bersih rally, and ignore and irresponsible provocation,” the team, formed by the Bar Council’s Legal Aid, said.
On Friday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi banned the use of yellow clothing and other printed material with the words “Bersih 4” ahead of the rally with an order issued under the PPPA.
But police did not move in against the thousands who protested in Bersih T-shirts in Kuala Lumpur since yesterday afternoon.

Sometimes, they make themselves a laughing stock by banning yellow Bersih T-shirts at their whims and fancies, but they never seem to learn.
For example, it must have peeved Comedy Court so much that they decided to work on a satire about former home minister Hishammuddin Hussein who banned the yellow T-shirt during a previous Bersih rally, but he, despite being a lawyer himself, did not mention under which law it was banned. This audio clip has since gone viral and I received it again last night.
This is partly because, as a result of Hishammuddin’s directive, many activists were arrested for wearing yellow Bersih T-shirts, but later, these same activists were discharged by the courts – a sheer waste of everyone’s time and money.
