Uzbekistan Airways to weigh passengers before they board

Uzbekistan Airways operates numerous routes throughout eastern Europe and Russia, and between London and Tashkent. It is sometimes used for internal or regional flights by tour operators offering “Silk Road” and central Asia tours.

The Tashkent-based airline, whose motto is “safety, stability, comfort”, has not made it clear whether larger passengers will be charged a fee, or excluded from flights on smaller planes.

An airline is now weighing passengers: What do you think about that?

So It’s Come to This: An Airline is Now Weighing Passengers

Here’s what the airline has shared: Each customer will face a “special weighing machine” (the airline’s words) before boarding their plane. Every flyer will be weighed with their hand luggage, in order to take an accurate reading of the total load.

According to the laws of the International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out regular procedures of pre-flight control such as weighing passengers with hand luggage in order to observe the requirements for ensuring flight safety.

After passing check-in on a flight and prior to boarding into the aircraft, we will ask you to pass the weighing procedure with a special weighing machine placed in the departure gate zone. The weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male/ female/ children).

As for the rest, the full confidentiality of results is guaranteed. We appreciate your assistance and thank you in advance for the help in the solution of our common task of flight safety.

Excess baggage: Uzbek airline starts weighing passengers

BISHKEK (Kyrgyzstan), Aug 14 — Plump passengers beware! The national airline of Uzbekistan says it has begun weighing those travelling along with their carry-on luggage.

The isolated Central Asian state’s carrier said that it had introduced the new regulations out of concern for “flight safety”.

“According to the rules of International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged as a rule to weigh passengers with their hand baggage to ensure flight safety,” Uzbekistan Airlines said in a statement posted online yesterday.

The International Air Transport Association has, however, denied knowledge of such a regulation.

The airline took the statement down from its website following a storm of media interest.

A statement on the airline’s website says that the new procedure is to determine the “average weight of passenger with hand baggage” — it doesn’t seem like passengers will be turned away at the gate if it’s found that they would put the plane overweight, or asked to pay more if they weigh more.

There are very few airlines that weigh humans in addition to baggage at check-in.

One other exception is the Pacific island of Samoa, where obesity is rampant and the country’s national carrier has introduced extra-large seats.

Uzbekistan’s national carrier plans to weigh passengers with their hand luggage before boarding as part of a new ‘flight safety’ measure

Uzbekistan Airways passengers will be directed to a “special weighing machine” at the departure gate, to determine each person’s average weight with their hand baggage.

The airline said that individual passengers’ weights would not be disclosed, and “full confidentiality of results is guaranteed”, with the weighing machine only categorising passengers by sex and into adult and child groups.

“According to the rules of International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out the regular procedures of preflight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe requirements for ensuring flight safety”, the company said in a statement.

The Tashkent-based airline, whose motto is “safety, stability, comfort”, has not made it clear whether larger passengers will be charged a fee, or excluded from flights on smaller planes.

It is also not known what measures would be taken should the total weight of the passengers and their hand luggage appear to exceed an aircraft’s weight limit and guidelines. It is sometimes used for internal or regional flights by tour operators offering “Silk Road” and central Asia tours.
