A man must never strike his wife, Mei Fun tells Selangor mufti
PETALING JAYA: Wanita MCA has criticised Selangor mufti Datuk Tamyes Abd Wahid for his justification of hitting a woman with a handkerchief if she was disobedient or did not listen to reason.
MCA vice-president Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said that it takes care and compassion for a marriage to succeed.
“His clarification and elaboration indicate he views any matrimony as based on a power-vs-submission relationship bent on punishment whereby the husband is the dominant partner who dictates while the wife is expected to be subservient and in complete obeisance,” Chew said in a statement on Friday.
…
Chew also said that Tamyes did not give boundaries, expectations, subject matter or rules as to how a wife would be judged as having been “disobedient” as they were too broad and subjective.
“The wife is rendered in complete anxiety trying to decipher how to avoid being sebat with a handkerchief by a demanding spouse,” said Chew, who is also Deputy Minister of Women, Welfare and Community Development.
“Would Datuk Tamyes care to consider a role-reversal whereby a wife who is tired with her spouse’s idiosyncrasies which irritate her and fails to heed her despite her countless reasoning then sebat him with a handkerchief? Surely not, as such an idea is thoroughly inconceivable and preposterous,” she added.
Chew said that Tamyes’ advice would cause unhappiness and humiliation leading towards a marital breakdown and a dysfunctional family.

I never said ‘cane wives’, claims Selangor mufti
The mufti of Selangor Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid has denied that he had said Muslim wives can be caned by their husbands to instil discipline in them.
Tamyes said that he never used the word ‘rotan’ (cane) and he claimed the reporter only came to him to ask him his comments on the caning of children.
The mufti said this when refuting several online media reports which attributed the ‘wives can be caned’ statement to him in their articles.
“The reporter concerned then went on to ask me about caning of wives.
“I told him that if a wife is disobedient with the husband and she refuses to listen to reason, then after many processes such as giving her the cold shoulder and probably not sharing the same bed, the husband can sebat dengan saputangan (hit with a handkerchief).
“But not on the face or on parts of the body which may hurt and not with the intention to hurt or to shame, but to educate.
“However, if a woman is of the very sensitive type and is likely to be worse off by such action, then that way must not be used,” said Tamyes.

Selangor Mufti Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid reportedly said that a man is allowed to beat his wife to train her to fulfil her duties.
Actually no. A man can’t do that. IT IS A CRIME TO BEAT YOUR WIFE. Just read the Domestic Violence Act.
How can someone whose job is to “advise and guide the Sultan, the State Government and the society” condone domestic violence?
We call on all Malaysians to stand up and reject the Selangor Mufti’s extremist, misogynistic, and unlawful statement, and to stand up against all forms of violence against women.

‘Husbands can cane their wives to train them – mufti selangor‘

It’s okay for husbands to cane wives to train them, says Selangor Mufti
A screenshot of WAO’s Facebook post.
According to the Selangor mufti, Muslims husbands can cane their wives with the intention of “training” them.
In an Utusan Online report three days ago, Datuk Tamyes Abdul Wahid said this form of punishment was sanctioned by the religion as a form of “rehabilitation” to train wives and children, on their duties.
“Husbands are allowed to hit their wives for the purpose of teaching without the intention to hurt them or disgrace them.
“This method, however, should be the last resort after all other methods fail including reprimanding her and sleeping separately,” said the article.
This was picked up by Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) whom in a stinging Facebook post yesterday, called on Tamyes “unfit to guide the Sultan”.
“No. A man can’t do that. It is a crime to beat your wife, just read the Domestic Violence Act.
“How can someone whose job is to advise and guide the Sultan, the state government and society condone domestic violence?
“We call on all Malaysians to stand up and reject the Selangor mufti’s extremist, misogynistic, and unlawful statement and to stand up against all forms of violence against women,” the post read.

NGO condemns Selangor Mufti’s ‘beat the wife’ call
Malaysians urged to stand up and reject the Selangor Mufti’s extremist, misogynistic, and unlawful statement.
SHAH ALAM: The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality has condemned Selangor Mufti Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid for reportedly stating that a man is allowed to beat his wife and children under certain circumstances.
The Selangor Mufti Department’s objectives include providing “advice and guidance to the Sultan, the State Government and society”, pointed out the Group in a statement, “not propagate misogynistic and unlawful views”.
The Group warned the Selangor Mufti that Penal Code section 323 criminalises “voluntarily causing hurt”, and the Domestic Violence Act makes it very clear that abuse by a husband towards his wife, physical or psychological, is a crime.
Having ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the statement added, the Malaysian government was committed to “condemn discrimination against women in all its forms”.
CEDAW General Recommendation No. 19 describes gender-based violence including domestic violence as a form of discrimination, and that “family violence is one of the most insidious forms of violence against women”.
Malaysia has also ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
