Some might call it bad taste, but the winner of Golden Bay’s annual Tata Beach Titanic Cup says his depiction of a sinking Malaysia Airlines plane was about humour rather than causing offence.

Seriously!!! It hasn’t even been a year

And the competition organiser admits that while the winning creation was on the risque side, such entries are par for the course for an event with “Titanic” in its title.

The sister of a Kiwi man on fatal flight MH370 is “disgusted” by the sinking of a cardboard Malaysia Airlines plane in a Golden Bay competition.

It was bad enough that someone entered the idea for the annual Tata Beach Titanic Cup for “humour”.

Even worse that the judges awarded it the winning prize, Christchurch woman Sara Weeks said.

“I’m gobsmacked,” she said.

“It hasn’t even been a year. What if it was his family member on the plane? He [the entrant] wouldn’t find it funny.”

Weeks’ brother, 38-year-old former Christchurch man Paul Weeks, was a passenger on the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 when it disappeared in March last year while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, China.

The creator, Robert Chubb, of Golden Bay, and said at the event that he believed enough time had passed since the MH370 tragedy for people to see the humour instead of taking offence.

“[The spectators] just thought it was a good display,” he said.

“[The MH370 disaster] was an international event, and this is a small local event. I think people would see the irony and the humour of it.”

His family had entered head-turning creations in the competition for several years.

  1. Tony says:

The organisers should rename the event “Tata Beach Waitangi Cup” if they think that the present name is funny and the disrespectful entry has “artistic” merit.
