Did David Gan generously gift $125,000 bags to celeb friends? Actually…

SINGAPORE – Celebrity hairstylist David Gan has built a reputation over the years as someone who is extremely generous towards his circle of famous friends.

So when TV hosts Ben Yeo and Quan Yifeng posted pictures online of themselves carrying Hermes Birkin bags worth over $100,000 each and thanking Gan for the “big presents” a few days ago, netizens assumed that Gan was playing Santa to the stars again.

But when contacted, Gan, who also posted the same picture on Instagram, clarified that it was just a joke.

The candid Malaysia-born star crimper, who is in his 50s, told The New Paper over the phone in Mandarin: “They came to my house to film a variety programme and posed with my bags for fun. The bags belong to me.”

He added matter-of-factly: “If they want the bags, they can tell me. I will give them when I die.”

The two bags in question are a red crocodile 50cm Hermes Birkin and a black crocodile 50cm Hermes Birkin, which Gan said cost $135,000 and $125,000, respectively.

A check online shows that similar Birkin bags can fetch between $100,000 and $200,000.

“Only $40,000 in the bag”: Local celeb hairstylist David Gan hits out at critics over money bag photos

David Gan posted a photo of a Hermes Crocodile Birkin filled to the brim with stacks of yuan, Inset: Gan and his current employer Chinese multi-millionaire Yuan Yuan, whom the money bag allegedly belongs to PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ DAVID GAN

Gan told The New Paper there was “only $40,000” in the bag, not enough to get many things at “high-end places like Hermes”.

He added that in China, it is normal to carry bags of money around because people prefer to pay in cash.

As it turns out, the money does not belong to Gan, but to his current employer Chinese multi-millionaire Yuan Yuan.

He has been her personal hairstylist and personal shopper in Beijing since August last year.

And funny thing is the money doesn’t even belong to him. He’s now employed by this super rich Chinese businesswoman in Beijing. Who can afford to fly him on a private jet and fly him 1st class everywhere just to shop for her and do her hair. Who won’t want his job??

But can money buy class? not sure about that.

BLING OR AH BENG! Top hairstylist David Gan mocked for showing off Birkin bag laden with money

There was only $40,000 in the bag

hhh

Just call David Gan “Mr Moneybags”.

The local celebrity hairstylist has been posting pictures on Instagram of himself with designer bags filled with cash, prompting some netizens to accuse him of showing off.

But Gan, 52, was unfazed and has lashed out at his critics.

The furore started last month with his first “money bag” post on Instagram.

And to prove that he would not bend to public opinion, he did it again earlier this week with another photograph that sparked a new war of words on Instagram.

The latest photo was a close-up shot of a Hermes Crocodile Birkin filled to the brim with stacks of yuan.

He told The New Paper: “There was only 196,000 yuan (S$40,000) in the bag and that can’t even get you many things at high-end places like Hermes.

“Many people in China walk around with bags of money because sometimes, it’s cheaper if you pay cash than with a credit card.

“I was in Beijing, so I posted a picture of what people usually do there.

“Why do people scold me? Unless you use a knife and cut me, if not, words will hurt much less and I will always fight back.”

So what is Gan doing with thousands of yuan?

As it turns out, the money is not even his. It belongs to his current employer, Chinese multi-millionaire Yuan Yuan. He has been her personal hairstylist and personal shopper in Beijing since August last year.
