‘Other nationalities had no complaints’

Family members of passengers from countries other than China had no complaints over flow of information over the search for Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370, acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.

“I asked the Indonesian delegation about the seven Indonesian passengers’ families and whether there were problems regarding information and the answer given to me was no,” he told the daily press briefing by Malaysian authorities on the search for MH370 today.

He said he had met up with families of passengers from other nationalities as well and that they did not have any grievances either.

“(Thus) I don’t see any major problems,” he said.

Chinese demand more information on missing plane

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Several dozen Chinese relatives of passengers on Flight 370 arrived in Malaysia on Sunday to demand to meet top officials for more information about what happened to the airliner that has been missing for more than three weeks.

Twenty-nine Chinese family members arrived in Kuala Lumpur after an overnight flight from Beijing, said Malaysia Airlines commercial director Hugh Dunleavy. They were ushered through a VIP area at the airport onto two large buses that drove them to a hotel about half an hour away.

About 30 Malaysian volunteers in pale blue polo-shirts led the relatives from the buses to the hotel. Some of the volunteers linked arms to prevent reporters from getting near and nudged cameramen aside.

A man named Jiang Hui said the relatives would speak at greater length later. “Now that we’ve come here, we will disseminate comments in a unified way. We don’t reject the media, but please give us a bit of time.”

Another man who gave only his surname, Xu, said in brief comments that the relatives want to meet officials “at the very highest levels.”

In Beijing before they boarded the flight, one relative said they would demand to meet the prime minister and the defense minister, who is the chief spokesman for the government.

“We have questions that we would like to ask them in person,” said Wang Chunjiang, whose younger brother, lawyer Wang Chunyong, was on Flight 370.

Chinese relatives in protest walkout

March 28, 2014

The panel of Malaysian officials sat quietly, staring out at the rows of empty seats in the ballroom.

BEIJING: Frustrated family members of the Chinese passengers aboard missing flight MH370 walked out of a briefing by Malaysian officials Friday, leaving the panel to stare at ranks of empty chairs while a single relatives’ representative berated them.

With the search on its 20th day, hundreds of family members of the 153 Chinese passengers stood up about an hour into a briefing at Beijing’s Lido Hotel and calmly filed out of the room, in a surreal scene that underscored the simmering tensions between the relatives and Malaysian authorities.

The man who led them in protest — a representative of the families who gave only his surname, Jiang — took the microphone as soon as officials opened the floor for questions following their presentation on the latest details of the search effort.

Jiang, who was wearing a white MH370 T-shirt underneath a tan blazer, turned to the assembled relatives and asked them whether they were satisfied with what they have heard from officials so far.

“No!” the family members responded in unison.

He led them in leaving the hall, as cameras rolled and the panel of Malaysian officials wordlessly looked on. Several dozen uniformed police officers stood on the sides of the room, watching the scene unfold.

Once the family members had left, Jiang returned and took a seat in the front row, directly in front of the officials.

“You have seen from the scene today that the next of kin are united,” he declared. “Chinese people are united. The facts which you have been concealing — or trying to conceal — will ultimately see the light of day. There will certainly be people who receive their due punishment as a result of this.

Irate Chinese tourists shunning Malaysia

MH370 The controversy surrounding missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has prompted many Chinese tourists, who once saw Malaysia as an attractive holiday destination, to look elsewhere, travel agents said today.

Eleven Chinese travel agents told Reuters that bookings between China and Malaysia had fallen severely, and that many people have cancelled their trips, amid anger at the perceived lack of information provided by the Malaysian government to passengers’ families.

“We used to have 30 to 40 customers a month for group tours to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Now there is no one asking about this route or booking,” a travel agent surnamed Chen told Reuters by telephone.

“Tourists don’t even consider going there. Many also have a negative impression of the country now,” said Chen with Comfort Travel, in the southern city of Guangzhou, which focuses heavily on South-East Asia tours.

Some Chinese travel agencies have cancelled group trips to Malaysia and stopped promoting cut-price tickets for fear of angering customers.

“The Malaysia Airlines incident involves national sentiment. If we go against the trend now, I’m afraid it will be provocative,” said a travel agent surnamed Xu with another firm.

According to an online poll on Sina‘s news website, 77.5 percent of more than 21,000 participants said the MH370 furore would influence their decision on travelling in Malaysia.

Chinese MH370 relatives protest at Malaysian embassy

March 25, 2014 1:18pm

BEIJING – Angry relatives of Chinese passengers aboard Flight MH370 scuffled with security personnel Tuesday as they descended on Malaysia’s embassy in a rare protest, weeping as they demanded answers on the crashed plane.

“Return our relatives,” around 200 family members cried at the gates of the Beijing mission, which was protected by a row of uniformed police and plain clothes security.

One of the most vocal campaigners against the Malaysian government, Wen Wancheng, burst out crying, his face contorted with emotion.

“My son, my son, return my son!” screamed the 63-year-old, as relatives behind him chanted slogans, raising their right fists. Behind him others bowed their heads and sobbed.

Scuffles broke out when uniformed security personnel attempted to block some of the relatives from reaching reporters, who were being kept in a designated area. One woman was taken away on a stretcher.

Paramilitary police with riot shields assembled nearby, out of view of the protesters.

The relatives, some in tears, had linked arms as they marched from the Lido Hotel, where they have gathered throughout the 17-day drama, about four kilometers (2.5 miles) to the mission.

They erupted in grief, fury and disbelief late Monday when Malaysia announced that although no wreckage has been found, satellite data showed the plane had crashed in the Indian Ocean.

WILL MAS EVER REGAIN THE TRUST OR BUSINESS OF THE CHINESE?

Will the hordes of Chinese tourists take MAS flights again?

ppq

Given the mismanagement by both the Malaysian Govt and MAS over Flight MH370, it is hard to believe that things will never be the same again…

*HOW MUCH WOULD THE TOURISM INDUSTRY LOSE?

China accounts for 7 percent of Malaysia Airlines’ global seat capacity and prolonged falloff in demand from Chinese travelers could turn out to be a major economic problem for Malaysia. The majority of the passengers on the Beijing-bound plane were Chinese, and the Chinese government and state-controlled media have criticized the way Malaysian officials have responded since the flight disappeared.

For Malaysia and other countries, China is an important new market. According to Scowsill of the World Travel and Tourism Council, the growth of outbound Chinese tourism is “exponential.” In 2010 there were 58 million trips by travelers from China, and by last year that figure had grown to 100 million. By the end of the decade, he says, there will be 200 million international trips from China.

After Botched Flight 370 Response, Malaysia Needs to Woo Angry Chinese Tourists

March 21, 2014
As the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 continues, will tourists worried about safety and the botched handling of the crisis by Malaysian officials stay away from the country? A lot depends on how much longer until the search effort locates the plane, says David Scowsill, president and chief executive officer of the World Travel and Tourism Council, a trade association representing airlines, hotel chains, car rental companies, cruise ship operators, and travel agents.
However, following the widely panned performance of Malaysian officials’ handling of the crisis, the country now faces a double burden: overcoming worries about transportation safety in the country as well as doubts about the abilities of the country’s leaders.

Missing MH370: Chinese families shout abuse at high-level Malaysian delegation

BEIJING: Angry family members of Chinese passengers shouted at high-level Malaysian officers when the team left the ballroom after a 30 minute meeting on Saturday.

The team, comprised of Malaysian ambassador to China Datuk Iskandar Sarudin, RMAF air operations commander Lt-Jeneral Datuk Seri Ackbal Abdul Samad and Department of Civil Aviation air traffic services director Ahmad Nizar Zolfakar had earlier taken turns to answer the questions submitted by the families a day before.

The officers then invited the families to send in written questions for further follow-ups.

Family members, who came prepared with PowerPoint presentation to raise more doubts regarding the disappearance of MH370, were shocked and began to create a commotion.

As the crowd grew increasingly unruly, Malaysian officials decided it would be most prudent to exit the ballroom.

A brief ruckus ensued when the family members yelled at the team, demanding that they stay.

The family members’ expressed their belief that the Malaysian government is hiding the truth and is avoiding the families.

“Say no to lying! Announce the truth! Give me back my loved ones!” the family members chanted.

Murderers! Angry kin charge at M’sian officials

Seething with anger, relatives of the Chinese nationals onboard the missing MH370 charged at Malaysian officials and accused them of murder during a briefing in Beijing.

According to an AFP report, the officials were at the Lido Hotel to brief the relatives on the status of the search and rescue mission, which entered its third week today.

The police had to step in to prevent the relatives from attacking the delegation, who were forced to leave the room.

“The Malaysian government is deceiving us. They don’t dare to face us. The Malaysian government are the biggest murderers,” a family member shouted at the briefing.

“Government of Malaysia, tell us the truth! Give us back our loved ones!” another family member reportedly shouted.

“We can’t bear it any longer… They’re offering us compensation, but we’ve lost our entire family.

“They can’t just tell us to come or go as they please. We’re going to wait here. If they don’t come, we’re not leaving,” another woman was quoted as saying.

“In the Chinese culture when a person gets to a certain age, the meaning of life is about your grandchildren — your legacy,” said Yin. “So when that is taken away, it is difficult for some of them to think of reason to live, a reason to stay around.”

Grief-stricken Malaysia Airlines Families Having ‘Suicidal’ Thoughts

A grief counselor for the relatives of passengers on the missing Malaysian jetliner said that desperation for information has led some family members to be hospitalized and others to have suicidal plans.

Paul Yin, a psychologist who has provided volunteer counseling services to the Chinese families who have spent two weeks in limbo at the Lido Hotel in Beijing, said they are fluctuating daily from hope to despair — and awaiting any concrete news of their loved ones.

“Many of the family members start to lean towards one way or another. They are leaning towards accepting that their love ones are not coming back,” Yin told ABC News. “Others are just holding onto any kind of rumors, or conspiracy theory that may convince them that they may be alive.”

Every day, the families’ emotions are jerked around as pieces of information filter through about missing flight 370, said Yin.

But yesterday’s news that officials may have found plane debris off the coast of Australia shattered their nerves and caused a “mini eruption,” he said.

That little piece of information pushed some over the edge to accepting that the plane had crashed.

“That’s when the emotions just poured out,” said Yin. “Elderly people with heart conditions and asthma were passing out and we had to call in ambulances.”

Yin went on to say he is especially worried about elderly family members, saying some had expressed suicidal thoughts and even made specific suicidal plans.

Relatives of Chinese passengers on board MH370 vented their fury today in their first meeting in Beijing with Malaysian government officials, almost two weeks after the aircraft vanished, AFP reports.

The event began in angry fashion, with family members yelling at the group of political representatives and senior military officials to stand up when they were being introduced, rather than nodding while sitting down.

“You have wasted so much time,” shouted one anguished relative, his voice quivering.

Earlier in the week, angry relatives accused Putrajaya of hiding information and misleading the public about the search and rescue operation.

The group also carried a huge banner with Mandarin characters, demanding answers from Putrajaya. – March 21, 2014.

BEIJING: Relatives of Chinese passengers on board MH370 vented their fury Friday in their first meeting in Beijing with Malaysian government officials, almost two weeks after the aircraft vanished.

The event began in angry fashion, with family members yelling at the group of political representatives and senior military officials to stand up when they were being introduced, rather than nodding while sitting down.

“You have wasted so much time,” shouted one anguished relative, his voice quivering.

Chinese citizens make up 153 of those on board Malaysia Airlines flight 370 — two-thirds of the total — and the meeting took place at a hotel where their loved ones have been waiting for news.

The Malaysian delegation arrived in Beijing late Thursday after repeated, angry demands by relatives for an opportunity to question Kuala Lumpur officials about the search and rescue operation.

Previous daily meetings at the hotel have been with representatives of Malaysia Airlines, and the relatives have been growing increasingly frustrated at the lack of answers.

Relatives have been speaking of hunger strikes and demonstrations in recent days.

AFP understands they have also been attempting to organise themselves into groups aimed at putting added pressure on the Malaysian government.

Uniformed police officers ushered foreign reporters out of the room before the more than three hour long meeting began, while a handful of selected Chinese state media organisations remained inside.

Domestic media are tightly controlled in China.
