The Blackout 505 rallies will continue next month in order to reject the result of the 13th general election, the organising director for the rallies, Johari Abdul, said today.
Johari said the rallies would continue until Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the Election Commission (EC) agree to fulfil the three demands the people have raised.
These are for the top heads of the EC to resign from their posts; for fresh elections to be conducted in 30 parliamentary seats; and to postpone any amendment to the election law and the constituency re-delineation exercise.
“Until now, more than a half a million Malaysians from all different races and age groups have joined the Blackout 505 rallies,” Johari said.
“The rallies have become a symbol of the rakyat’s political awareness, representing the majority of the more than 51 percent who in GE13 supported reforms and change in this country,” he told a press conference at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.
According to Johari, four states will organise 505 rallies in June. These will be in Perlis on June 10; in Sungai Petani, Kedah on June 11; in Kota Baru, Kelantan on June 12 and in Batu Pahat, Johor on June 14.
He added that the organisers would seek permission from the police for all the forthcoming rallies.

PKR pointed out that organisers of the rallies have heeded police advice and yielded to late changes of venues on several requests.
“It would be better for the police and home ministry to work hand-in-hand with the organisers to ensure that the assemblies are held well without any untoward incidents.
“Police should involve in the rallies positively to balance between the right to assemble and general security of the public, and not by making intimidation and court action against the organisers,” he said.

PKR undeterred by prosecutions, says more rallies underway
PKR says it is time for the police and the home ministry to realise that peaceful assemblies are here to stay.
PETALING JAYA: In the wake of a string of prosecutions of Pakatan Rakyat leaders today over the Blackout 505 rallies, PKR has declared that more rallies are to be organised in the future.
“PKR opposes the nationwide campaign by the police to charge the organisers of the Blackout 505 rallies. More organisers of the rallies are expected to be charged later.
“It is a clear attempt to punish those who have organised peaceful and orderly rallies as enshrined under the Federal Constitution. The fundamental rights of Malaysian citizens are being threatened following the charges.
“But more rallies are still underway, and the organisers are undeterred by this kind of intimidation.
“It is time the police and home ministry realise that peaceful assemblies are here to stay, because they are an integral part of a functioning democracy,” the party said in a statement issued this afternoon.
Five Pakatan leaders were charged in four Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Johor today under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act for failing to provide a 10-day notice to the police prior to holding the Blackout rallies in their respective states.
All of them pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to the charge.

No let-up on PR rallies
TWO weeks after the general election, there is no sign of rallies abating with more being organised by Pakatan Rakayt to protest against alleged electoral fraud and vote-buying.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said more people are coming out to join these protest because of a strong sense that something is not right.
“For a small state like Negri Sembilan, close to 20,000 people turned up, and in Penang, it was nearly 70,000,” he said.
He said the events allowed people to vent their frustration over the election results.
“The voters are upset and, rightfully, PR should be in government if not for the fraudulent means by which we lost,” he said.
PR has called for these Blackout 505 rallies after the outcome of the elections. The first rally in Petaling Jaya on May 8 attracted 100,000 people.

Anwar: I may be arrested
The opposition leader tells a crowd of 20,000 at a Black 505 rally in Seremban that he may be branded a traitor
SEREMBAN: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim last night told of about 20,000 at a Black 505 rally in Seremban last night that he may be arrested soon and charged.
“I want to tell you…let (them) record this and hand it over to the Home Minister and the Prime Minister. Whatever your plan…to arrest me and to charge me because Anwar is a traitor to the…
“I’m not at all bothered. I don’t know what their plan is,” he told his audience, most of them youths who braved a heavy downpour to hear him.
“But I have one satisfaction that really touched me,” said Anwar. “I’m happy that the future of the country is guaranteed with youths.
“This is the spirit of the new Malaysia. Those present here tonight are the ones who have dignity, who love freedom and justice. They don’t bother about BR1M.
“We must throw the BN government out,” he told the cheering crowd.
Anwar has been on a nationwide tour holding rallies at major cities, wanting the BN government, to step down and allow Pakatan to assume power because of irregularities in the just concluded polls.

No compromise with opposition on street protests, says Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Putrajaya will not compromise but will take stern action against Pakatan Rakyat (PR) if it foments chaos on the streets, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi .
Umno-owned daily Utusan Malaysia reported Ahmad Zahid today as saying that prevention was better than cure, after tens of thousands of Malaysians thronged six PR rallies across the country to protest against alleged vote-rigging in Election 2013.
“I will not give warning, but just wait for stern action,” Ahmad Zahid was quoted as saying by the Malay-language daily.
The Malay broadsheet’s front page today was headlined “KDN: Tiada kompromi (KDN: No compromise)” and the newly-minted home minister was quoted as saying: “Prevention is better than cure, and the price of early prevention is cheaper than solving problems after.”

Malaysian Opposition Lawmaker Is Charged

- The opposition failed to give Malaysian police 10 days’ notice of this May 8 rally in a Kuala Lumpur suburb
A fresh row began to brew between Malaysia’s government and its critics after an opposition lawmaker was charged with failing to provide police sufficient warning for a rally that drew tens of thousands of people.
Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, communications director in opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s People Justice Party blamed the government for selective prosecution, and said the charge undermines Prime Minister Najib Razak‘s call for national reconciliation after his ruling National Front won the May 5 elections by the thinnest margin ever.
“I don’t think this is a good sign of the new regime that we see here in Malaysia,” Mr. Nik Nazmi said.
A government spokesman said it would be inappropriate to comment on on-going legal proceedings, while Mr. Najib previously has denied allegations that the May 5 election was rigged.
The National Front has ruled Malaysia since it gained independence from Britain in 1957. The latest general election dealt the ruling coalition its worst results ever. The coalition won 60% of the seats in Parliament, but cornered only 47% of the popular vote, while the opposition’s campaign for a graft-free Malaysia helped it secure 50% of the vote.
The charge against Mr. Nik Nazmi adds to the growing debate on tolerance for dissent, and risks splitting open the political divides in the Muslim-majority democracy, where the opposition has steadily gained support among urban voters with its call to fight corruption and pledges to make Malaysia a more open society.
“The prosecution itself is an abuse of court process and is politically motivated,” said Eric Paulsen, Mr. Nik Nazmi’s lawyer. He plans to appeal. ”The general rule is in the Federal Constitution where freedom of assembly is allowed,” he added.
Mr. Nik Nazmi was charged Friday under section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 under which one could be prosecuted for failing to inform the police 10 days prior to a planned political gathering. If convicted, Mr. Nik Nazmi could be fined up to 10,000 ringgit, roughly $3,000, and would lose his Selangor state assembly seat if the fine tops 2,000 ringgit.
Mr. Nik Nazmi maintained no political party can afford to give 10 days notice for a peaceful gathering.

- The rally was dedicated to the proposition that the government had stolen the election held three days earlier.
He was a key player in organizing a May 8 rally at a Kuala Lumpur suburb. The stadium was filled to the seams with tens of thousands of Malaysians who braved heavy rains to hear opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim give a speech in which he claimed the government had stolen the election. The late-evening event resulted in severe traffic snarls that choked almost all the roads and intersections around the stadium, though the rally, the first in a series of similar protests that the opposition is organizing around the country, was peaceful.

Tunku Aziz: Stop Anwar’s rallies
Former DAP vice-chairman says it is time the authorities put a stop to Anwar’s ‘invitation to anarchy’.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former DAP vice-chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim today urged the government to put a stop to opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s nationwide rallies.
“Given his special talent for mischief-making, the rallies pose a serious threat to national security and public order. It is time the authorities put a stop to his invitation to anarchy.
“I strongly urge the government to apply the full force of law to stop the rot from setting in. His selfish act bordering on the criminal, has gone far enough.
“The government owes it to the people to protect them from the unwarranted assault on their rights to go about their business peacefully,” said Tunku Aziz.
He stressed that any further delay by the government to act will be interpreted as a sign of weakness.
“The government cannot afford to be perceived as indecisive so early in its re-election particularly over a matter such as incitement to overthrow a legitimate government by violent means,” he said.
When asked why he thought the government has been hesitant to take action, he said that it may be due to the “lies spread by Anwar, believed by those who don’t really know the truth.”
“The government fears it may be accused of being repressive. It must act within the law so that people will have confidence in the the authorities to protect those who are not with Anwar,” he said.
‘Anwar must grow up’
When reminded of Pakatan’s opposition to street rallies to topple the BN government, as propagated by some pro-Pakatan NGOs, Tunku Aziz said: “Although Anwar said his rallies have been peaceful, in reality, rarely do these kind of rallies have a peaceful ending.”
