OoiGEORGE TOWN, April 20 — The DAP can use its iconic rocket symbol for the May 5 general election after getting last-minute confirmation late last night, party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said today.

He said the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur received a letter by hand from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) at 10 last night, stating that it had no objections to the DAP using the logo, and that the Election Commission (EC) had informed all returning officers to accept nominations from the DAP.

“All DAP candidates can now use the rocket symbol,” Lim said after filing his nomination papers for the Bagan federal seat here.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — Hundreds of candidates from both the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) have gathered outside nomination centres across the country to file their papers for the May 5 general election.

Police are keeping a tight cordon outside the centres to separate the supporters, who are waving colourful party flag and banners.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says the returning officer has accepted the party’s rocket symbol, adding “DAP shall contest under rocket!”

Lim said the DAP headquarters here received a letter by hand from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) at 10 last night saying it had no objections to the use of the rocket symbol in GE13.

“All DAP candidates can now use the rocket symbol,” he said.

“I believe the EC (Election Commission) has informed all returning officers to accept nomination forms from DAP,” Lim said.

Nik Aziz hails DAP use of PAS logo, says breaks racial barriers

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat hailed the DAP’s decision to use the PAS logo for Election 2013 as a “great blessing” for his party, saying today the move would lead to the death of Islamophobia in Malaysia.

The PAS spiritual leader disagreed that DAP’s decision to contest as a PAS candidate would be a hindrance to Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) dream of Putrajaya, insisting that this could well be the opportunity for a new Malaysia under the opposition bloc.

“Be confident that this historic decision will be remembered throughout the ages. This is the moment when the rocket lands on the moon,” he said in a statement this evening, referring to DAP’s rocket symbol and PAS’s moon.

Use rocket first during nomination, says Guan Eng

The DAP has informed all its 51 parliament and 103 state candidates to use the rocket symbol first during nomination tomorrow, and show the Election Commission the letter of authorisation signed by secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.”If in the event we cannot use our symbol, then show them the letter of authorisation signed by PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali,” said Lim at a press conference today. This comes after the DAP has decided to use PAS and PKR symbols for the coming general election on May 5.Lim said two letters of authorisation has also been signed by the party and PAS for its candidates.”This is our last chance to use the rocket symbol but if we cannot, we will use PAS’s symbol,” said the caretaker Penang chief minister.——–PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali when contacted also confirmed that DAP candidates will use the PAS logo in the peninsula.”I have signed all the letters of authorisation of the DAP candidates (contesting in the peninsula),” said Mustafa. He described this as “a historic” occasion for PAS, but brought about “by force” by ROS’ actions.

Sarawak DAP chief Wong Ho Leng told a press conference in Sibu that the PKR authorisation letters are already on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to the state.

He said PAS had sent copies of their authorisation letters earlier which arrived this morning and had been given to candidates in rural areas for fear that the PKR letters would not arrive in time.

At a later press conference, Wong confirmed that the letters will arrive in Sibu by 6.30pm to allow his members to stand under PKR’s banner.

DAP confirms it will use PAS, PKR logos

DAP chairperson Karpal Singh said DAP will contest under the PAS logo in the peninsula and PKR logo in Sabah and Sarawak in the general election with the Registrar of Societies’ failure to withdraw its letter.

The party had appealed to the ROS to withdraw its Wednesday letter to suspend the party’s existing central executive committee (CEC) but till this afternoon the department had been silent on the matter.

“Following this, we will do as what was decided yesterday and contest under the PAS logo in peninsula and PKR for Sabah and Sarawak,” he said when contacted.

PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali (left) when contacted also confirmed that DAP candidates will use the PAS logo in the peninsula.

“I have signed all the letters of authorisation of the DAP candidates (contesting in the peninsula),” said Mustafa.

Meanwhile, Sabah DAP election director Fred Fung said that the authorisation letters by PKR for its candidates are already on the way from Kuala Lumpur.

“We have people standing by in Kota Kinabalu now to collect the letter and take it to our candidates in Sandakan and Melalap,” he said when contacted.

Sandakan and Melalap are 319km and 157km away from Kota Kinabalu respectively.

All DAP candidates in Johor also received authorisation letters from both PAS and DAP this afternoon in Skudai.

The letters were handed over by state chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau.

EC: No issue with DAP using PAS, PKR logos in GE13

By Amin Iskandar

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 — DAP candidates have the right to contest Election 2013 under PAS and PKR symbols, Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said today.

Wan Ahmad added that the election regulator had no problem with DAP’s decision that was made today, after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) failed to retract its letter rejecting the opposition party’s office-bearers elected last December.

“That is DAP’s decision and it’s DAP’s right,” Wan Ahmad (picture) told The Malaysian Insider today.

“SPR has already said that DAP can contest under its own party logo. But if DAP decides to use other parties’ logos, that’s up to them. If that is their decision, then DAP candidates need to submit letters of authority by PAS and

PKR leaders tomorrow that authorise them to use the respective parties’ logos,” he added, referring to the EC’s Malay acronym, SPR.
