KUALA LUMPUR – Every year when Chinese New Year draws near, shopping malls will begin to blast CNY songs and adorn their premises with festive decorations to usher in another prosperous year. Unfortunately, Suria KLCC shot themselves in the foot with their pagoda decoration in conjunction with CNY, which has since invited widespread scorn from Malaysians.
A viral Facebook post by Malaysia Shopping Mall showed a towering pagoda erected near Suria KLCC’s Park entrance, where netizens said that its structure looked like it was made up of paper products made specially to be burnt and offered for one’s ancestors during the Ching Ming Festival.
Ching Ming, also known as Qingming or “Tomb-Sweeping Day”, is a traditional Chinese festival dedicated to paying tribute to one’s origins and ancestors.
.
Many netizens were disgusted by the decoration, and they called the designers “lazy” and slammed them for not conducting enough research into the Chinese culture.
