Molnupiravir is discovered and manufactured by Merck, the company who also discovered Ivermectin, some 40 years ago. When IVMT ( which Merck and WHO said was safe some 40 years ago ) suddenly, last year became an unsafe drug when it was found to be very effective against Covid 19. Merck and WHO managed to convince MOH that they need more data, which MOH finally undertook in May 2021, whose results are still pending ( in the meantime 27,000 Malaysians have died.
Now Merck brings out and is promoting this new drug, Molnupiravir, which was hastily put into phase 3 trial in September and after about 1 month was declared effective in reducing hospitalisation by 50% ( Ivermectin reduces covid by 80% and death by 70% ). Their phase 3 study was on mild to moderate covid and the end point was ( soft ), hospitalisation ( not death ). IT WAS NEVER DONE IN RE-INFECTION CASES ( as touted by Minister KJ ). Safety was just a 1month experience.
With such limited data, MOH decided to “book” 150,000 doses. The cost of a course of treatment is USD 700. 150,000 doses will be good for about 15,000 courses, a total of USD 10.5 million ( RM 45 million ). Your guess is as good as mine, as to why we are using up so much money, to buy a drug with limited effectiveness data, limited safety data, when there is an alternative ( Ivermectin ) that cost about RM16 per course of treatment and which has more effectiveness data ( thousands of patients data ), more safety data ( about 4 billion doses have been used for the last 40 years )? RM 40 million against an el cheapo ( surely you can guess why in Malaysia Boleh ).
If MOH is true to their word, they should do another clinical trial locally, before approving the use of this new drug ( applying the same yardstick as they insist for Ivermectin ).
But I fear that the powers of be does not really care about data. It is all about money and profits for some.
