FMT Reporters – February 1, 2020

PETALING JAYA: Two people have been arrested over the mob incident in Ulu Tiram, Johor, when Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was forced to leave a family dinner through the rear exit of a restaurant.

Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador said this evening that the two persons were believed to be the culprits.

“A task force has been set up to investigate the incident,” he said.

Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman jumping over a fence after leaving a restaurant by the rear exit after an abusive crowd gathered outside.

The case will be investigated under four sections of the Penal Code, including for starting a provocation, assault and criminal intimidation.

Hamid also said the public should not politicise the incident by spreading baseless information. “I hope the public will abide by the law and do not act in any manner that creates provocation,” he said.

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had earlier said that the government had instructed the police to take immediate action on the incident. Johor police said earlier that a task force had been set up to investigate.

Syed Saddiq was photographed climbing over a fence on Friday night as he was safely evacuated from the restaurant, where Syed Saddiq, members of his family and friends were at a dinner gathering.

A group of about 200, clad in black and red shirts, started a commotion outside, calling for Syed Saddiq to leave Johor.

Syed Saddiq lodged a police report on Friday night and criticised the action of those involved.

POLICE have been ordered to identify members of a mob who heckled Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman at a political event in Johor yesterday evening, and take action against them, said Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement, the home minister said he viewed the incident seriously, as the disruption was severe enough to bring the programme where the youth and sports minister spoke to a stop.

Umno files report against Saddiq, demands apology over mob incident

Published: 6:21 pm

Umno Youth has filed a police report against Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and has threatened a lawsuit if the latter does not apologise to the party.

This is after Syed Saddiq claimed that the mob which surrounded and heckled him in Ulu Tiram, Johor last night, was believed to have been from Umno.

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (photo) wants police to probe the minister for slander, as well as under the Communications and Multimedia Act for spreading objectionable information.

He said they will be sending a letter of demand to Syed Saddiq soon to demand a public apology.

“If he fails to do so, Umno Youth will file a defamation suit in court,” he said in a statement this evening.

Syed Saddiq and his family attended a gathering at a restaurant at Ulu Tiram last night, together with members from the Bersatu Youth, women and division wings as well as their families.

He said a group of about 200 people allegedly gatecrashed the function, surrounded him and began heckling and shouting.

In a Facebook posting this morning, he claimed the mob was believed to be from Umno.

In videos allegedly of the incident circulating online, the group could be heard yelling for the Muar MP to leave the state.

Syed Saddiq further claimed he, his family, the two assemblypersons and others had to “jump the fence” to get away.

Asyraf has denied Umno’s involvement in the incident.

Meanwhile in a separate statement, Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, – who is also Bersatu president – said he has ordered the police to investigate the incident.
