Police are probing preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin for defamation after he claimed that he was beaten up by jail wardens.
Selangor CID head Fadzil Ahmad confirmed that prison authorities have lodged a report against Wan Ji, and the matter was being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code.
He also confirmed that the police were applying Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Wan Ji, in a statement, said he was summoned to the Kajang district police headquarters yesterday and was informed about the counter-police report against him.
“The police asked for my smartphone to complete the investigation and I cooperated by surrendering it,” he said.
He stressed that the report against him alleging that he had defamed the prison was untrue.
Wan Ji was jailed on July 9 following his unsuccessful appeal against a conviction for sedition, where he was accused of insulting the Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
The Shah Alam High Court also increased his jail term to 12 months, up from nine months. He was ordered to serve his sentence immediately.
After successfully obtaining a stay of execution two days later, Wan Ji told his supporters at a gathering that he was assaulted by a prison warden.
“He asked for my name, I said ‘Wan Ji’. He then asked me to take off my glasses and then ‘bam, bam’, he gave it to me three times.
“I was wondering what I did wrong, while the other wardens laughed,” he said during a gathering which was recorded on video.

POLICE have opened three investigations in connection with preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin’s claim of assault by a prison officer.
Two of the probes are into reports filed against the preacher by the Prisons Department, Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmad told The Malaysian Insight.
