KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Former ‘Rockanova’ reality show participant, Zarith Sofia Mohd Yasin, was fined RM27,000 by the Sessions Court here on Wednesday (Jan 15) for keeping and confining a sun bear cub at her apartment in Desa Petaling in June last year.
Zarith Sofia, 28 was fined RM20,000, in lieu six months imprisonment, for the charge of keeping the sun bear (Helarctos Malayanus) and another RM7,000, in lieu four months in jail, for confining the animal.
Sessions Judge Hakim Manira Mohd Nor meted out the punishment after the accused changed her plea to guilty when the case was brought for remention today.
In July last year, the singer had claimed trial to keeping a sun bear (Helarctos Malayanus) cub, a totally protected species under the Second Schedule of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, without a special permit.
The charge framed under Section 69 (1) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and punishable under Section 69 (1) of the same Act provides a fine of up to RM200,000 or imprisonment of up to 10 years or both upon conviction.
The singer was also accused of confining the cub in an environment that was not conducive to its comfort and health and was charged under Section 86 (1) (c) of the same Act, which carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 and not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both, upon conviction.
The offence was committed at a unit of the Sentrio Pandan Condominium, Desa Pandan, here on June 6,2019.
Earlier, Zarith Sofia’s lawyer, Nik Muammer Hurrie Mohamad Sukri, in mitigation, pleaded for his client to be spared a jail sentence as it was her first offence.
“She only wanted to rescue the animal and had no intention of trading it for profit.
“When the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) found the animal, it was in good health, ” he said.
Perhilitan prosecuting officer Nazarudin Kamarudin asked for a sentence that will act as a deterrent.
“This is to also serve as a lesson to the accused and society that crimes against wildlife is viewed seriously by the court, ” he said. – Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Singer Zarith Sofia Yasin told a Malay daily that she mistakenly thought that the bear she “rescued” was a dog.
“It was night time when I found the bear cub in a weakened state by the side of the road – and I thought it was dog!” she told Kosmo! In a report published on Sunday (June 9).
Zarith Sofia, a previous contestant on reality show Rockanova told The Star‘s Malay language portal mStar Online that she found the bear – whom she later named Bruno – in a weakened state near Bukit Ampang about two weeks ago.
She claimed that she was going to hand the animal over to Zoo Negara and did not intend to break the law.
“I was worried about sending Bruno to the zoo (while it was ill) because the animals there look skinny,” she said.
Zarith added that she had taken good care of the bear and had fed it good food.
“If Bruno could talk, it would surely say the food I gave him was delicious – it ate chocolates!” said the 27-year-old, who is also known as Pia.
She also claimed that she did not keep the bear caged.
“I didn’t put him in a cage because I didn’t want him to stay there for too long – that would have been even more cruel.
She dismissed claims that she runs a business selling protected wildlife as “crazy”.
“I have a business to run during the day and at night, I sing… when do I have time to sell animals?
“This is not the way I make a living. Animals like that are not for sale,” she said.
Zarith also said she is ready to face the legal consequences of her actions.
Bernama reported that a female singer was arrested on Friday (June 7) by the Wildlife and National Parks Department for illegally keeping a sun bear cub in her condominium unit.

A resident, identified only as Jay, said the roaring shocked them as he and other residents gathered at the unit to investigate the “scream”.
“One of my neighbours called the authorities. They thought it was a prank but they arrived quickly,” he said.
How the cub was smuggled into the apartment remains unclear.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) has arrested a singer suspected of keeping a sun bear at her condominium unit in Desa Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
The 27-year-old woman was arrested at 8pm yesterday at her home after Perhilitan officers conducted a raid following a public tip-off.
Perhilitan director-general Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim, when contacted, confirmed that a woman had been arrested to facilitate investigations into the case.
“The woman could not produce any document of ownership for the bear,” he said.
Abdul Kadir said she was being investigated for keeping an endangered wild animal without Perhilitan’s permission, an offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 [Act 716].
A five-second video as well a picture of a sun bear poking its head out of a window at the woman’s condominium unit went viral yesterday.

Jiran terkejut beruang ‘minta’ makanan

“Beruang berkenaan dipelihara tanpa permit,” katanya.
