Results of GE 14

The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) had one of its poorest outing in a general election; winning only two Parliament and three state seats.

It retained the Tapah parliamentary seat through Datuk V.Saravanan and the Cameron Highlands Parliament seat through and Datuk C.Sivaraajh.

At the state level, the MIC which contested 13 seats, only retained the Jeram Padang seat in Negri Sembilan via Datuk L.Manickam, as well as Tenggaroh state seat through K.Ravenkumar and the Kahang state seat which was won by Datuk R.Vidyanathan, in Johor.

It lost all the state seats contested in Penang, Kedah, Perak, Melaka and Pahang.

PKR should change its name to that of an Indian party to reflect its membership, according to MIC president SA Vigneswaran.

He was responding to PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that his party has more Indian members than MIC.

“He (Anwar) is right. There are many Indian members in PKR. I have heard the same. I suggest he changes PKR’s name to an Indian party,” Vigneswaran told Malaysiakini.

“Perhaps he should also give the deputy president post to an Indian as an acknowledgement of the number of Indians in PKR,” he added on a sarcastic note.

Previously, Tamil newspaper Tamil Malar quoted Anwar as describing MIC as a “school without students.”

According to the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader, PKR officially has more Indian members than the BN component party, which was founded in 1946.

Anwar said this following a meeting with PKR Indian leaders from Perak at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya on Wednesday.
