Anwar Ibrahim has sued MCMC Chief Operations Officer, Mazlan Ismail, for defamation…

On Aug 2, 2013, Mazlan held a press conference where he claimed to have received 6,000 copies of a poison pen letter from a staff at Karpal’s law firm alleging that Anwar had paid his late lawyer Karpal Singh more than RM50 million since 2008 as legal fees and bribes to judges and prosecutors.

This was reported by TV3 and Utusan Malaysia.

Anwar sued Mazlan Ismail, TV3 and Utusan.

On 5 October 2016, it was reported that Utusan Malaysia had expressed regret over the article and retracted it, and settled the defamation suit with Anwar.

On 14 May 2018, it was reported that The KL High Court ordered Umno-controlled TV3 to pay RM1.1 million in damages to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim for defamation.

Anwar was in court today over a lawsuit against former Permatang Pauh Umno candidate Mazlan Ismail and private broadcaster TV3.

The suit came about when Mazlan, whom Anwar defeated for the Permatang Pauh seat in the 2013 general election, claimed to have received letters alleging that Anwar had paid his late lawyer Karpal Singh more than RM50 million since 2008 as legal fees and bribes to judges and prosecutors.

Karpal, who was Anwar’s lead counsel in the Sodomy 2 case, was killed in a car accident on April 17, 2014.

Anwar said at the time the statement was made, he was the opposition leader and Permatang Pauh MP. He said the allegation put him in low esteem in the eyes of the public.

He also said the statement by the defendants implied that he was a politician who lacked integrity, was of low morals and was unfit to hold public office as he offered bribes.

Anwar, who is seeking an unspecified amount in damages, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court, will return to court on Aug 24 to record a possible settlement for the suit.

His lawyer Sangeet Kaur said they were still discussing the terms of settlement between Mazlan and TV3.

However, the discussion does not involve Utusan Melayu, which was also named in the suit.

Mazlan yet to produce ‘6,000 letters’ linking Karpal, Anwar to graft, court told

UNTIL today, Umno politician Mazlan Ismail had not produced the thousands of letters he claimed he possessed which allegedly linked the late Karpal Singh and Anwar Ibrahim to corruption, the court heard today.

“The PKR office, my office and Karpal’s office never received any letters. Karpal and I did not receive any information that he (Mazlan) has delivered (the letters) to our office. Up until today he has not handed over any letters,” said Anwar, in reply to a question from his lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo during a hearing on his defamation suit against Mazlan, TV3 and Utusan.
.
Anwar is suing the three parties for defamation over TV3 and Utusan’s reports of Mazlan’s claim that more than 6,000 letters linking Anwar and Karpal to graft were in his possession.

“A person is responsible only for the words that he utters. Even if the media goes on to summarise what he has said, they have to use the words that Mazlan used. This is what we want to establish (to show) whether what my client said is defamatory,” said Mazlan’s counsel Hasnal Rezua Merican after the court adjourned

“The letters contained defamatory information but my client has said that he cannot comment as he subjected to Bafia and he will let Anwar and Karpal explain (their roles in it).”

Anwar claims no action despite cops clearing him of S’pore bank account
.

Anwar Ibrahim claimed that the authorities did not pursue the findings of a police investigation with regard to a report he had filed in September 2013.

The police report concerned an allegation that Anwar and his late lawyer Karpal Singh had bribed the judiciary.

Testifying at the Kuala Lumpur High Court in his defamation suit today, the former opposition leader claimed that police investigations had cleared him of having a bank account in Singapore.

“They (police) found that such a bank account in Singapore does not exist despite the allegation made (on bribing the judiciary mentioning the account).

“This was revealed to me by the investigating officer when he came to investigate me at the Sungai Buloh prison. I was expecting action to be taken against the defamation made against me but I suppose those higher up did not.

“This is the state of the law in this country,” he added during cross-examination by former BN candidate for Permatang Pauh Mazlan Ismail’s (photo) lawyer Hasnal Rezua Merican.

Anwar, who also named Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd and Utusan Malaysia as defendants, said Mazlan, who now chairs the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), did not take action despite knowing he (Anwar) did not have such an account.
