KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said today he will not quit Umno, after two senior party members resigned.
The Padang Rengas MP said, however, he believes many Umno members are “frustrated” with the direction of the current leadership as well as the ongoing alliance with former rival PAS.
“I do believe if we have a direction, where we are headed to, I don’t think they will be leaving. For me, I think that they are quite frustrated with the party direction working with PAS is not something they are happy with,” Nazri told Malay Mail, referring to Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.
“But I will stay in Umno, if I am not the Padang Rengas Umno division chief, not a six-term MP maybe I would be thinking a different way.
“But I have to think about all the voters who have supported me for 25 years, it is not fair for me to go (and quit),” he said.
Kepala Batas MP Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican told Malay Mail that there was some tension within Umno over the leadership’s alliance with PAS, but quickly added that the party is still “intact.”
“There is a clash, but it is not tantamount to something big, or hugely divisive there are differences of ways in which Umno should continue the cause and struggle,” the Umno leader said.
He also said that he will stay with the party and support the current leadership.

PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim has not rejected an offer by Umno Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz to campaign for him in Port Dickson.
Anwar said he welcomed anyone’s support and that all offers should be considered.
However, he said this will depend on PKR’s strategy for the by-elections.
“I welcome any support, but then when it comes to party strategy, party platform, that’s going to be decided by the party. I am not arrogant enough to reject any offer of help.
“Anyone who wants to help we should be prepared to consider.
“The issue is whether it is on the platform of Pakatan Harapan or PKR, which is certainly not the case,” he told reporters when met in Kuala Lumpur today.
Nazri made the offer to campaign for Anwar, as a gesture to bring Umno and PKR closer together.
This, Nazri said, was to help Umno get back into government quickly.

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz will campaign for PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim in the coming Port Dickson by-election, reported news portal Malaysiakini.
“I’m serious,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini on Thursday (Sept 13).
Nazri said he wanted to campaign for Anwar as he believed that it is what is best for Umno to pave its return into the government.
“I don’t foresee Umno being in government in the near future but there is some common thinking among Umno MPs that we should come back into government as early as possible.
“The only way to do that is to work with PKR… so we should show some goodwill… if we want to form the government, let Anwar win,” he said.
On Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan saying that the party would give Anwar a fight in Port Dickson, Nazri said he was of the view that this was not an Umno decision.
The former Tourism and Culture Minister was also quoted saying that Mohamad, the former Negri Sembilan MB, was “not an MP and does not know what we MPs are planning.”
Nazri, who is currently said to be holidaying in Paris, France, also said that Umno could not win the seat and should let PKR carry on with replacing the seat’s MP.
Nazri would still campaign for Anwar even if Umno contested the seat as he said he wanted to do what was “best for Umno, not for individual interests”.
“I will still campaign for Anwar but this is still speculative (that Umno will contest),” he said, adding that he was prepared to face disciplinary action for his stand.
PKR was the party that the people had chosen, as shown by the past three by-elections, said Nazri.
“There have been three by-elections. MCA, PAS and Umno lost badly, the people did not budge and still rejected those who fought against PKR (and Pakatan Harapan).
“So you have to be close to the people and they want to give PKR a chance,” he said.
