Police raid five clinics over probe into ‘sale of babies’

Four of the clinics were in Selangor – two in Klang and one each in Tanjung Sepat and Sepang – and one in Negri Sembilan in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Baby’, said a police spokesperson.

He said a maternity clinic and a general clinic were raided in Klang at about 3pm by a team from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Unit of the Bukit Aman CID.

The police seized several documents and ordered three female staffers of the clinics to give statements at the nearest police station, he said to reporters at one of the clinics.

Al Jazeera reveals network of traffickers, doctors and government officials, with one man advertising babies online housing 78 pregnant Indonesian women.
.

PETALING JAYA: Al Jazeera’s investigative reporting team has come up with a sensational documentary, going undercover over four months to expose a baby-selling racket in Malaysia.

The award-winning current affairs programme 101 East uncovered the sinister trade in Malaysia that revealed a network of traffickers, doctors and government officials, all profiting from the most vulnerable women and children.

“Malaysia: Babies for Sale” will be aired on the international TV network at 10.30pm in the UK (6.30am Friday in Malaysia).

According to a press release by Al Jazeera, the reporter who went undercover found that:

1) Babies are being traded like commodities in Malaysia;

2) Price is determined by race, skin colour, gender and weight;

3) Corrupt doctors and government officials are falsifying birth documents; and,

4) Critics blame Malaysia’s complex adoption laws for creating the underground market, targeting couples who can’t have their own child.

In her four-month investigation, 101 East journalist Chan Tau Chou discovered just how easy it is to buy a baby in Malaysia, where traffickers offer potential customers catalogues containing photos of pregnant women to choose from.

theSundaily: Probe ordered into babies for sale on Facebook |

KUALA LUMPUR: The Welfare Department’s director-general has instructed the head of its children’s division to investigate links to Facebook pages that offer babies for sale.

The move comes after the department held a meeting this morning following theSun‘s exposé on Tuesday titled “Babies for Sale on Facebook”.

The department’s Public Relations Officer Laila Zulkifli said the matter had been highlighted for the division “to take action and provide a response (and) report to the director-general”.

Meanwhile, Yayasan Chow Kit founder Dr Hartini Zainuddin said the Police Cyber Investigations Response Centre in Bukit Aman was following up on the case after links to the Facebook pages were provided to them.

Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) director Datuk Dr Zaininah Mohd Zain said that she was not aware of arrangements being made in the hospital to sell babies.

“For those who want to adopt, our social medical (officers) must go and see whether they (potential adopters) are worthy of adopting babies.

“At the same time, the parents or the mother is asked if she wants to give up the child for adoption. Once the mother consents, or if the mother is not in the right state of mind, we will get the “waris” (heir) to confirm that the infant is meant to be adopted,” she said when met at the Institute for Health Management here.

When asked to comment on a Facebook post in a closed group where it was stated that a biological mother was due to deliver a baby in HKL, she said the hospital was

Baby-selling sites are easy to access and contain details of the infant such as its age, gender and health with Chinese males fetching USD10,000 per kg.

PETALING JAYA: Childless couples in Malaysia hopeful of finding a shortcut to adoption can now log-on to Facebook to buy a baby instead.

According to a report in the news portal The Sun today, both open and closed Facebook pages detailing the age, gender and health of babies for sale have garnered over 600,000 hits via Google.

Potential adopters are provided with details such as which trimester the expecting mother is at and, based on a case-by-case basis, the mother’s monetary needs until after delivery.

In one of the baby-for-sale pages, the administrator described the platform as being created as “an alternative for biomums and adopted parents.”

Another page meanwhile appeals to couples or individuals unable to care for their babies or who are afraid of being stigmatised due to pregnancies out-of-wedlock, to surrender their babies to them with “no questions asked.”

There was also a testimonial from one satisfied couple, who posted a picture of their baby, saying they were grateful for having adopted the child from a Facebook site.

Yayasan Chow Kit founder Dr Hartini Zainuddin, expressed her concern about the set-up as it was easy to access the baby-for-sale groups via the Internet and said, “The (modus operandi) can involve an intermediary, or through biological mothers with immediate families. This depends on the information available on the FB pages.

“However, there are adoption groups that advise on the adoption process using the proper channel
