Meanwhile, PKR state assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong, who met them at the police headquarters, said the pair are well and in high spirits.

In a Facebook post, she also penned the messages from Maria and Mandeep.

PETALING JAYA: A student activist leader is the latest to be arrested in the police’s sudden Friday crackdown on those suspected to be involved in tomorrow’s Bersih 5 rally.

According to Suaram activist Amir Abdul Hadi, Muhammad Luqman Nul Hakim Zul Razali, a fourth-year Islamic political science student and member of Kesatuan Mahasiswa Malaysia in Universiti Malaya, was arrested in Genting Sempah.

Luqman is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. If convicted, he could be jailed up to two years, or fined, or both.

His arrest follows those of DAP’s Ronnie Liu in front of the Bukit Aman police headquarters for incitement to riot and DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke over his speech at the Pakatan Harapan Convention last Saturday.

Bersih deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari has vowed that Bersih 5 rally will go on despite the arrest of its leader Maria Chin Abdullah.

“Yes, we will go on as schedule,” Shahrul told Malaysiakini this evening.

Shahrul said he would lead the Bersih protesters at Masjid Negara while former Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan will replace Maria at Dataran Maybank on Jalan Bangsar.

“Ambiga will be there,” he said, adding that the Bersih steering committee will lead the mass rally.

Meanwhile, Ambiga confirmed that she would only lead the rally in Bangsar if Maria could not attend.

She hopes the police will release Maria and Mandeep tonight.Bersih 5 Rally will go on.

Police have arrested Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and the electoral watchdog’s secretariat secretary Mandeep Singh.

Earlier, a police team from Bukit Aman as well as officers from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SMM) raided the Bersih office in Petaling Jaya at about 3pm.

A tweet by Bersih said the police seized 10 computers, two mobile phones, and documents related to their payroll and bank accounts during the two-hour raid.

The electoral watchdog is being investigated under Section 124C of the Penal Code, which is related to attempts to carry out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

A police team has raided the Bersih office in Petaling Jaya this afternoon on the eve of its rally which among others demands the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Section 124C relates to attempts to carry out activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

“There are some 10 policemen at our office now, we have been informed that they want to confiscate our things.

“Our lawyers are handling the matter,” said Mandeep.

Bersih is being investigated under Section 124C with regard to funding it received from Open Society Foundations, which is linked to billionaire George Soros.
