Islamic State eyeing Chinese Muslims, say police
Chinese Muslim Associations however, say there is little chance of that happening as the community is closely guided so as not to stray from “real teachings of Islam”.
PETALING JAYA: Islamic State (IS) militants have set their eyes on the Chinese Muslim community in the region, to recruit into their fold.
Malay daily Sinar Harian quoted Bukit Aman Special Branch Research and Strategy division officer DSP Tan Kok Tiang saying that the matter came to light following the discovery of websites and social media sites by the militant group, which among others, contained Mandarin songs.
Speaking at an anti-terrorism seminar held in Segamat, Johor, over the weekend, Tan urged the Chinese Muslim community to not fall easily for the propaganda spread by the militant group.
“So far, there are about 800 Chinese Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang, who are involved in IS,” Tan said, according to the daily.
He added that a sizeable number of Malaysian IS militants hailed from Johor.
Sinar Harian also spoke to the Chairman of the Kelantan branch of the Chinese Muslim Association of Malaysia (Macma) Johari Yap, who said that there is slim chance of Chinese Muslims in the country falling for the IS ideology.
“This is because the community provides constant guidance to ensure that no one, including the new converts, stray from the real teachings of Islam,” Yap said.
Meanwhile, Multiracial Reverted Muslims President Firdaus Wong also told Sinar Harian that it pays to take serious heed of the police’s finding.

He also dismissed chances of local Chinese Muslims following the footsteps of their Uighur counterparts, as the “community here comprises intellectuals and in Islam.”

Chinese Muslim group denies ‘converts abuse zakat’ claim
An NGO representing Chinese Muslims said it has no knowledge of an alleged syndicate using Muslim converts to abuse zakat aid.
This comes after the claim made by Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Council Baitulmal deputy manager Ahmad Tarmizi Yahya yesterday when justifying red tape in the disbursement of zakat.
“I have never come across such a case. Muslim converts who seek aid from Baitulmal are poor, and only some of them actually receive the aid.
“Baitulmal’s duty is to disburse the aid when it is sought because it must be rightfully disbursed. What the recipient does with the money is between him and Allah.
“Do you know anyone who seeks aid and gives it to someone else? When you’re in a desperate position yourself, why would you be willing to give it to someone else?” said Chinese Muslim Malaysia Association’s Malacca chapter chairperson Lim Jooi Soon.

Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement’s (Abim) outreach centre representative Normah Sulaiman, too, said it is the first time she is hearing of such a syndicate.
Normah said no such thing happened with Abim, which also has difficulties obtaining aid from Baitulmal.
“By right, zakat aid is the right of the converts, so we should help them to get their rights,” she said, and urged Baitulmal to reveal how it disburses the funds.
