‘We’re prepared’, says police chief ahead of

PARIS (REUTERS) – Paris’ police chief said on Monday (June 6) he would be receiving thousands of reinforcements ahead of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament and that his force was as prepared as it could be to face the risk of a militant attack in the French capital.

France is in a state of emergency after militants killed 130 people in a series of coordinated assaults across Paris in November. The French, United States and other governments have warned that militants may target the tournament.

Ukraine’s state security service also said on Monday a French citizen detained on the border with Poland had been planning attacks on Jewish and Muslim places of worship in France to coincide with the soccer championship.

Unexpected twist: 82 security staff revealed to be on terror watch list – French intelligence

A new shocking twist in the Euro 2016 saga has emerged just days after stark warnings ISIS would make the event a target. It turns out 82 of the people hired for security posts on the football cup are on French terror watch lists.

The Directorate General of Internal Security (ISB) has screened a total of 3,500 individuals already hired for the job of ensuring the safety of visitors, according to Le Point. Those among the 82 found on the watch list could by definition either belong to a terrorist group, such as Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), or have a history of questionable behavior or extreme beliefs on either the left or right.

According to French authorities, some 90,000 personnel in total will be on duty during Euro 2016, including the stadiums, fan zones and on the streets. Of those, 77,000 are police and gendarmerie, while the rest comprise security and military personnel, as well as 1,000 or so volunteers.

“Such a unique event in exceptional circumstances requires extra security measures,” Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told journalists.

French President Francois Hollande acknowledges threat of Euro 2016 attack

PARIS (AFP) – French President Francois Hollande acknowledged on Sunday there was a threat of an attack during the Euro 2016 football championship but said the country must not be intimidated.

He also issued an appeal for a halt to transport strikes that threaten to disrupt the month-long football extravaganza opening on Friday.

“This (attack) threat exists,” he told public radio France Inter. “But we must not be daunted.

The country is on high alert for possible terror strikes during the football extravaganza opening on Friday, following the extremist attacks in Paris in January and November last year.

The United States warned last week of the risk of attacks, with the French stadiums hosting the matches but also the so-called fan zones where spectators will be gathering in large numbers potential targets.

France has also been in the grip of nationwide protests and transport strikes over controversial labour reforms, with the sense of malaise compounded by flooding in the Paris region.
