Pro-Anwar billboards land Selangor MB in sedition probe

PETALING JAYA, April 26 — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is being investigated under the Sedition Act over billboards across the state that had described PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as a “political prisoner”.

Police recorded Azmin’s statement for close to 90 minutes at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters today over the #BebasAnwar billboards, which have been taken down by the police.

“I regret and am disappointed by this investigation. The police could not even clarify why this is an offence. When my lawyers repeatedly asked them, they only said that they are investigating them based on orders from above,” Azmin said after having his statement recorded.

Azmin was accompanied by lawyers N. Surendran, Latheefa Koya and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Police took down the billboards last month when Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar deemed the contents, which included a description on Anwar as a “political prisoner”, to be seditious.

This was after Umno Sungai Besar division chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos threatened to burn down one of the billboards in Ampang, before deciding against his plan due to heavy police presence.

Cops go after Azmin for sedition over ‘Free Anwar’ billboards

Police are investigating Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali under the Sedition Act 1948 over billboards put up across the state calling for former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to be freed from jail.

Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president, was summoned to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters to have his statement recorded over the case.

The Gombak MP, who was accompanied by several PKR lawmakers, was questioned for more than an hour beginning at 4.10pm.

Jamal’s bid to torch Anwar billboard routed by heavy police presence

Published Today 8:55 pm

Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos has again failed to carry through his threat to torch a billboard calling for jailed de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim’s freedom, this time in Sabak Bernam.

Jamal said he had abandoned his plan after almost 50 police officers were present at the site of the billboard at the Jalan Sungai Panjang intersection, according to the New Straits Times.

Instead, he and some 30 supporters decided to lodge a police report over the billboard at the Sabak Bernam district police headquarters.

“I urge the police to investigate the installation of the billboards and the local authorities must say if they allowed it and its contents because Anwar is definitely not a political prisoner.

“These billboards could incite the people and create unrest,” he was quoted as saying.

On Wednesday, Jamal, accompanied by some 80 men, had also threatened to torch a similar billboard in Ampang but later backtracked.
