Police Asked Brussels Residents Not To Tweet About Lockdown, So They Shared Cat Photos Instead

Good job, Internet.

As Brussels authorities continued to impose a lockdown amid an ongoing search for a key suspect in the Paris terrorist attacks and a major terror threat, police on Sunday night asked residents not to post about the lockdown on social media, for fear that terrorists could use information found there to track where people could be gathering or where police could be conducting raids.

In response, Brussels residents tweeted cat pictures instead.

BRUSSELS — Belgian police offered a virtual bowl of pet food to Internet cats today (Nov 23) to thank social media users for agreeing to pause their posts during a major anti-terrorism operation in Brussels.

“For the cats that helped us last night… help yourselves!” Belgian police said on their Twitter account, with a photo of a metal bowl with the police logo in French and Flemish, filled with cat food pellets.

It was retweeted more than 4,400 times in French and 1,400 times in Flemish.

BRUSSELS — The family homes of the suspected mastermind of the Paris attacks and one of the suicide bombers stand only a few blocks apart in the Belgian capital’s Molenbeek neighbourhood. After a string of attacks in recent years linked to its grimy streets in central Brussels, a key question arises: Why Belgium?

The tiny nation renowned for beer, chocolates and the comic book hero Tintin is now suddenly infamous for Islamic extremism — and the easy availability of illegal weapons.

Belgium has a central location in Europe; few border controls; a common language with prime jihadist target France; and a political divide between French and Dutch speakers that has long created bureaucratic disarray in justice and security.

From the prime minister down, there is widespread acknowledegment of a complicated and disjointed national structure that hampers the fight against extremism. “We have to do more and we have to do better,” Prime Minister Charles Michel told legislators on Thursday (Nov 19), as he announced a slew of fresh measures to fight Islamic extremism.

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, a Belgian who was the presumed organiser of the attacks, was killed in a raid Wednesday outside of Paris. Belgium and France are still on a manhunt for Frenchman Salah Abdeslam, a longtime Brussels resident. Both men grew up in the hardscrabble Molenbeek district, and their family homes stand within a short walk of its main police station. Abdeslam’s brother, Brahim, blew himself up in a suicide attack, while another Brussels resident, Bilal Hafdi, also died in a suicide bombing.

Belgium Warns of Paris-Style Attack as Brussels Enters Lockdown

Terror alert in Brussels raised to highest level, with warning of “imminent threat”

“We have precise information that outlines the risk of an attack similar to the one that unfolded in Paris,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel told a press conference Saturday morning in Brussels. “It is a threat based on the theory that it would take place with arms and explosives, maybe even in several places and at the same time.”

The Belgian capital, which houses most of the institutions of the European Union and NATO, has been on alert since it emerged that at least three jidhadists behind the Paris terrorist attacks had lived in the city. Salah Abdeslam, one of two brothers believed to have been involved and now the focus of an international manhunt, comes from the Brussels district of Molenbeek.

Authorities canceled sporting events and cultural activities around the Belgian capital. Professional soccer games were postponed, movie theaters, opera houses, libraries and galleries closed and shopping malls and department stores shut their doors. The city’s Atomium tourist venue didn’t open on Saturday, while night clubs and concert venues said they wouldn’t open in the evening.

The Brussels metro will remain closed until at least Sunday afternoon, Michel told reporters Saturday morning after a meeting of the national security council. The council will meet again on Sunday to decide whether to extend the closure beyond the weekend.

“We are mobilizing the maximum number of people that is possible. All policemen are being called on,” Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon told VTM television. “All the reserves will be called and also the military will give more support to guarantee the highest possible security.”

US embassy warns Americans to stay home as Belgium raises terror alert to highest level

Americans in Belgium were ordered “to shelter in place” Saturday after local authorities warned that the threat of a terrorist attack in the country’s capital is serious and imminent.

The U.S. Embassy in Brussels also ordered American citizens to remain at home as the city was placed on lockdown in response to the terrorist threat. The national crisis center raised its terrorism alert Saturday to its highest level as Belgian police continued to search for a suspect in the Paris attacks that killed 130 people.

In a statement on its website Saturday the embassy informed Americans that “if you must go out, avoid large crowds.”

The warning also urged U.S. citizens to “exercise caution in public transportation systems, sporting events, residential areas, business offices, shopping malls and other tourist destinations.”
