Rally goers providing extra security for bank, Nazir Razak jokes

zn

Prominent banker Datuk Seri Nazir Razak today waded into the Bersih 4 rally, making light of the protesters sleeping in front of a CIMB bank branch near Dataran Merdeka.

Posting a photograph of several rally goers doing exactly that on his Instagram account, the CIMB Bank group chairman joked that they were providing extra security for the bank.

“NOT a bank run! Just some free extra security maybe?” his caption read.

[URGENT PRESS STATEMENT] 30th August 2015 – Contaminated drinks an act of sabotage

URGENT PRESS STATEMENT

30th August 2015

Contaminated drinks an act of sabotage

The Coalition for Clean and Fair Election (BERSIH 2.0) condemns the insidious act where boxes of juices offered to the public during the Bersih 4 peaceful assembly yesterday night under the guise of “support for BERSIH” had been contaminated.

These drinks have caused participants to have stomach pains, vomiting and diarrhea. This seems to be an act of sabotage and an attempt to poison our participants, who have since been given medical attention and taken to the hospital.

We urge the police to investigate this as soon as possible and bring the culprits to justice. Police reports have been made.

We also advice all participants to not accept any free drinks distributed by people not authorized by the Bersih 4 organizing committee.

If they do, we advise them to check the top seam of the packet drinks for puncture holes, and if found, immediately report it to the security unit. Attached is a video by our medical team coordinator, Mr Tan Gengta of the packet drinks in question.

The Malaysian Insider is bringing live updates on the Bersih 4 rally here:

SUNDAY, 9.30am: The singing of the national anthem, Negaraku, follows the interfaith prayers.

9.15am: Interfaith prayers are held after the morning exercises. A Buddhist monk, followed by three Muslim men, led in prayers according to their respective faiths from atop a lorry that is used as a makeshift stage for Bersih 4.

9am: Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah meets reporters at the protest scene near Dataran Merdeka.

Bersih 4 participants doing some light exercises led by Bersih 4 representative Ivy Josiah. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Melati A. Jalil, August 30, 2015.Bersih 4 participants doing some light exercises led by Bersih 4 representative Ivy Josiah. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Melati A. Jalil, August 30, 2015.

She says it is not entirely true that Malays are not participating in Bersih 4, in response to news reports that rally participants were overwhelmingly of other races.

“We can’t discount that there is more non-Malay participation. But it’s not like Malay participation is non-existent. This is a natural cause by all Malaysians, and we should not see it according to race,” she said.

Meanwhile, military helicopters fly above the square.

After Maria speaks, Bersih 2.0 representative Ivy Josiah stands on a stage and leads hundreds of rally-goers in morning exercises and stretches.

A group of volunteers, dressed in Bersih 4 t-shirts, have also begun segregating waste collected in garbage bags at the intersection of Jalan Raja Laut and Jalan Raja.

My observations on the Bersih 4 rally |

Embedded image permalink

Sometimes, they make themselves a laughing stock by banning yellow Bersih T-shirts at their whims and fancies, but they never seem to learn.

For example, it must have peeved Comedy Court so much that they decided to work on a satire about former home minister Hishammuddin Hussein who banned the yellow T-shirt during a previous Bersih rally, but he, despite being a lawyer himself, did not mention under which law it was banned. This audio clip has since gone viral and I received it again last night.

This is partly because, as a result of Hishammuddin’s directive, many activists were arrested for wearing yellow Bersih T-shirts, but later, these same activists were discharged by the courts – a sheer waste of everyone’s time and money.

UPDATE: Police have taken up positions behind Merdeka Square barricade in KL

Published: 6:13 AM, August 30, 2015
Updated: 8:52 AM, August 30, 2015

KUALA LUMPUR — Some 17 hours after the Bersih 4 rally began yesterday, protesters are bracing for another 17 to go before the rally officially ends at midnight tonight (Aug 30).

Police did not move in at all against protesters in Kuala Lumpur, although elsewhere, in Malacca, there were reports of several people being arrested for wearing yellow clothing with “Bersih 4” printed on them.

Day 2 of the 34-hour street demonstration broke after a peaceful night which saw protesters sleeping on the pavements and in the middle of the roads around the historic Dataran Merdeka, which will be the site of the 58th Merdeka Day celebrations tomorrow.

Yesterday, some 200,000 people were estimated at the rally’s peak about 4pm, according to the organiser, electoral reform group Bersih 2.0, although police put the number at 29,000.

Protesters wound down after midnight, some bedding down near the barricades erected around Dataran Merdeka where Bersih 2.0 has stationed its security team and put up banners reminding people not to cross the line into the square. Other slept in the middle of the road and on the pavements.

Smaller groups passed the night holding civic education workshops or listening to talks.

This is people’s power, says Siti Hasmah of Bersih 4. READ:

Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, the wife of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, described Bersih 4 as a display of “people’s power”.

She said this while accompanying her husband on a whirlwind visit to Dataran Merdeka this evening.

Quizzed on what she thought of the protest, Siti Hasmah replied: “Ini adalah kuasa rakyat (This is people’s power).”

Siti Hasmah rarely weighs in on political matters, even during Mahathir’s 22-reign as prime minister.

Meanwhile, Mahathir did not wish to share his thoughts about Bersih 4, though he had previously remarked that a street protest should be the last resort to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

“I just came here to see,” he told reporters while wading through the crowd.

Teruskan, Teruskan (Continue, continue),” he added as the couple was mobbed by protesters and media personnel.

The couple arrived at about 7.30pm and left some five minutes later.
