MyKMU: trying to get cops to target churches

Umno-linked portal MyKMU.net has questioned the motive of Catholic churches to offer shelter for Bersih protesters.

The portal, which has vociferously defended Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, speculated that this may be an attempt to get the police to target places of worship when fleeing protesters enter these buildings.

“Later, it will convenient to blame police and the BN government for disturbing places of worship and freedom of religion, isn’t it?

“It would be a hot election issue,” MyKMU.net said.

It noted that the state election in Sarawak, which has a substantial Christian population, is around the corner.

“Christians make up almost the majority there and such issues are sensitive for them even though they are from different denominations,” it said.

The pro-Najib portal likened this to the Bersih 2.0 rally in 2011 when protesters fleeing from police ran into a private hospital. Police were later accused of firing tear gas at the hospital.

“Now the organisers of Bersih dare to work with churches on the demonstration’s places for sanctuary if police take action against their planned disturbances.

“This is too much. Investigation and action must be taken against them,” it said.

Church and Bersih conspiring against cops, says Umno site

MyKMU.net questions church’s offer of refuge to rally goers.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno website has alleged that the Catholic Church is conspiring with Bersih to paint the police in a bad light with the hope of influencing the result of the upcoming state election in Sarawak, where Christians make up a large portion of the electorate.

Commenting on Kuala Lumpur Archbishop Julian Leow’s announcement that three churches in the city would provide refuge to participants in this weekend’s Bersih rally, an article in MyKMU.net expressed suspicion that the alleged conspirators were hoping police would enter church compounds to make arrests.

The writer said it was “strange” that the Catholic Church did not make such offers when previous non-Bersih demonstrations were held in the city.

“Does this have anything to do with the soon-to-be-held Sarawak election?” he asked.

He speculated that if the police had to enter church compounds, Bersih and the Catholic Church would accuse the Barisan Nasional government of disrespecting houses of worship and violating the principle of religious freedom.

He said he could see no other motive behind the church’s decision.

Churches are apolitical, Archbishop Leow says.

August 25, 2015

Availability of three churches as “places of refuge” made in the “great spirit of compassion”.

KUALA LUMPUR: Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur His Grace Julian Leow today confirmed the apolitical nature of the Catholic Church.

“The Catholic Church is not aligned to any political party,” a media release issued from the Archbishop’s House in Bukit Nanas said this evening.

Seeking to clarify the basis of the availability of three Catholic Churches here in conjunction with the forthcoming Bersih 4.0 rally on August 29 and 30, Leow said, “A place of worship is not only a house of prayer but also a place of rest for the weary and needy.”

“It is in this great spirit of compassion that the Catholic Church has decided to allow St John’s Cathedral in Bukit Nanas, St Anthony’s Church in Pudu and Fatima Church in Brickfields (Jalan Tun Sambanthan) to be places of sanctuary during the Bersih 4.0 rally,” he added.

Leow also assured Malaysians that the church has for the past month “been praying for our beloved nation and leaders.”
