Home of alleged arsonists razed

SUNGAI PETANI: In an ironic twist, the home of two brothers on remand for allegedly throwing a molotov cocktail at a school here was razed in a fire – hours before they were released from remand.

The house in Taman Tiong, Jalan Badlishah here, caught fire at about noon on Monday and was almost completely destroyed.

No injuries were reported as the men’s parents were at the hospital while their 24-year-old sister was at the courthouse waiting for their release from remand.

The 24-year-old factory worker and 31-year-old odd-job worker were freed from remand hours later at 6.30pm.

The brothers’ father M. Neelalakandan, 61, said he was informed about the fire at about 12.30pm when he was at the hospital seeking treatment for a swollen leg.

The diabetic patient was at the court earlier to meet his sons and left for the hospital with his wife when told that his sons would be home later in the day.

PUTRAJAYA, June 23 — The Education Department today dismissed as untrue a social media report that a senior assistant of a primary school in Kedah had asked non-Muslim pupils to drink their own urine.

Deputy director-general of education Datuk Ahmad Tajudin Jab said the pupils had misunderstood what the teacher had told them.  “The teacher had advised the non-Muslim pupils not to drink in the presence of Muslim pupils (during the current fasting month).

He had said that they could drink outside or in the washroom. “However, some pupils had misunderstood this and claimed that the teacher had ordered non-Muslim pupils to drink their own urine. The teacher had never said that. We have to clarify that. The pupils misunderstood,” he told reporters at his office here.

If the teacher’s statement is qualified as humour, Vell Paari said, then the joke is on the Malaysian education system, politicians and the police.

… MIC communications and public relations chief S Vell Paari said this rib failed to crack him up, similar to how the authorities did not laugh when blogger Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee posted an image with the greeting ‘Selamat Berbuka Puasa’ while eating pork soup. “They were charged for their social media post, but now this teacher is being defended by Kedah executive councillor for education, Tajul Urus Mat Zain, and the police,” Vell Paari told Malaysiakini. “A teacher is entrusted with the noble task of shaping impressionable minds, and these are primary school pupils, for heaven’s sake,” he added. If the teacher’s statement is qualified as humour, Vell Paari said, then the joke is on the Malaysian education system, politicians and the police. As for Tajul claiming that it was a “misunderstanding”, the MIC leader said the real misunderstanding was appointing him to overlook the education portfolio. “Perhaps our teachers should be sent for training on what constitutes permissible jokes. Tajul and the Kuala Muda police chief should also attend the same classes,” he added. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/302758Jun 22, 2015

For Kamalanathan, urine ‘joke’ in terribly bad taste

Although the Kedah teacher who told students to drink water in the toilet had supposedly said so as a joke, Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan said this was unacceptable. “I was informed that the teacher used those words in jest with no intention of hurting any students’ feelings. “However, when dealing with students, use of such statements are not acceptable. “The teacher should be well aware of the consequences of such bad judgement, especially so with students,” he said in a Facebook post tonight. He said the ministry will wait for the police to complete its investigations, after which the it will take ‘appropriate action’ to ensure that the incident will not be repeated and to send a message to teachers to be sensitive on how they interact with students. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/302741 – — The teacher then went on to state that non-Muslim students could ask their teacher’s permission to drink outside of class, and then jokingly told them to drink in the toilet “but don’t drink your urine too”. Exco, cops say teacher joked about ‘drinking urine’

Both the Kedah exco member for education and police have defended a teacher who allegedly told pupils to drink their urine on the grounds that he was joking. Exco member Tajul Urus Mat Zain said the teacher yesterday reminded Muslim pupils of their obligation to fast during Ramadan, and asked non-Muslim pupils to avoid drinking in front of their Muslim classmates. The teacher then went on to state that non-Muslim students could ask their teacher’s permission to drink outside of class, and then jokingly told them to drink in the toilet “but don’t drink your urine too.” … He added that the school also held a special assembly this morning to correct the teacher’s statement about drinking urine. Meanwhile, Kuala Muda district police chief Khalil Ariffin also said the teacher was joking. “The case has been dealt with. This is a misunderstanding. I have met the teacher and the teacher said this was a misunderstanding by the non-Muslim students,” he told Malaysiakini. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/302718P.Kamalanathan With regards to the issue that was highlighted regarding a primary school in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Parents lodge 2 police reports against teacher over ‘drink urine’ remark

z1The parents in Sungei Petani today say this incident would not have occurred if action had been taken against the headmaster in the incident at the Seri Pristana school in Sungei Buloh, Selangor, in July 2013, – The Malaysian Insider file piv June 22, 2015. A group of parents banded together to lodge two police reports against a senior teacher from a primary school in Sungai Petani, Kedah, who had allegedly told non-Muslim pupils to drink their own urine if they were thirsty during Ramadan. One of the parents, Kavitha Somaly, said she was informed of what the teacher had said by her 11-year-old son who is a student of Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Ibrahim. “Those who were alert and paid attention to the announcements made yesterday, like those in Standards 4, 5 and 6 were shocked at what the teacher said and my son came home and told me. “But we didn’t actually believe our own children as they could be playful and might be joking about this,” she told The Malaysian Insider today. However, Kavitha, sensing something was amiss, called up the parents of other non-Muslim students and asked them if they had heard anything about it from their children. “Shockingly, they said their children had told them the same thing and we decided to do something about it. One of the parents penned the letter that we later sent to the state education department,” she said. This morning, Kavitha along with the other parents went to the school but decided against lodging a report there and instead, decided to make one with the police. The group eventually made two police reports, one was made by Kavitha and the other a group report, lodged collectively by all the parents against the teacher. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/parents-lodge-2-police-reports-against-teacher-over-drink-urine-remark#sthash.ND5buTGv.bfw7DTPB.dpbs — Star

‘Urine drinking’ remarks meant as a joke, says Kedah exco member

ALOR SETAR: The statement by a teacher telling pupils to drink their urine was meant as a joke, said a Kedah exco member. Earlier, the Education Ministry had called for a probe over the issue. The teacher from a high-performance cluster school in Sungai Petani had reportedly asked non-Muslim pupils to drink their urine to quench their thirst. State Education, Transportation and Public Works Committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said the speech of the primary school senior assistant of student affairs was misconstrued. “He actually said it in a berseloroh (joking) tone. “What he said was jangan minum air kencing kamu pula (don’t you instead drink your own urine) which was misinterpreted by the pupils,” Tajul told reporters at his office at Wisma Darul Aman here, Monday afternoon. He added that with the clarification, the issue was now resolved, and it should not become a political and racial matter. http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/06/22/kedah-exco-deny-report-non-muslim-students-can-drink-own-urine/

ALOR SETAR: A group championing the interests of non-Muslim students (Waris Murid-Murid Bukan Islam) have lodged a complaint with the Kedah Education Director that a senior member of the teaching staff at the Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Ibrahim directed them to drink water only in the toilet. This same person was also alleged to have said that in the event they had not brought any water with them to school, they could drink water from the tap there, or “drink their own urine”. These instructions were allegedly given by the assistant principal, who is also responsible for student affairs, during the school assembly on June 21. http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2015/06/22/non-muslim-students-told-to-drink-their-own-urine-in-the-toilet/

‘Teacher told non-Muslim pupils to drink urine’

A senior teacher at a primary school in Sungai Petani, Kedah, had allegedly told non-Muslim students not to drink water in class but to do so in the washroom. The teacher, who is in charge of student affairs, also allegedly told the pupils that if they don’t have water, they could drink from the “tap or their own urine” instead. This is according to a purported letter of complaint dated yesterday that has gone viral on various social media platforms. … “The speech by the senior assistant for student affairs is uncivilised and uncouth, and could stoke racial sentiments among non-Muslim students and community. “It is also clear that he as a teacher has no respect for the feelings of non-Muslim students, teachers, and next-of-kin,” read the letter. The letter names the Kedah state education department director as the addressee, and was purportedly from the “Next-of-kin of non-Muslim Students” of the school The teacher allegedly made the statement yesterday during a school assembly.
