In medical terms, a post-mortem autopsy  is an examination of a corpse in order to determine the cause of death. Informally, it means an analysis or review of a finished event.

IN GE 12 AND GE 13, THE CHINESE HAD SUPPORTED THE DAP BUT THIS TIME, ENOUGH CHINESE ABANDONED THE DAP TO GIVE GERAKAN’S MAH A SLIGHT MAJORITY.

DAP party strategist Dr Ong Kian Ming:

Support from the Chinese community, DAP’s traditional vote bank, fell by 15%, from 85% in last year’s national polls to 70% in the by-election year, which Ong termed as the “most pessimistic” projection.

“This was somewhat surprising given the positive response the campaign was receiving from the  Chinese voters including the mammoth ceramah on the final day of the campaign.”

SOME PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO BLAME PEOPLE DRESSED IN RED WHO URGED VOTERS TO VOTE FOR THE MAN IN BLUE.

QUESTION: WERE ANY OF THESE MEN IN BLUE EX-DAP PARTY MEMBERS, OR SUPPORTERS OF A CHINESE-DAP?

SOME WOULD ALSO BLAME THE INTERNAL POLITICKING IN DAP FOR TURNING SOME DIE-HARD DAP SUPPORTERS TO VOTE AGAINST THEIR OWN CANDIDATE.

There have been at least two parties within the party in DAP Perak for many years, and jockeying for positions is a perennial problem. One faction may have gained the ascendancy for now but…

Superman Hew Kuan Yau is definitely not of the Nga-Ngeh faction, so he and his supporters may see that he has been sidelined.

Factionalism in Teluk Intan DAP worsens

IPOH: The Perak DAP factionalism fight has spilled over into the upcoming Teluk Intan by-election.

Party sources said among the big names being touted for the May 31 by-election are party supremo Lim Kit Siang’s political secretary Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, party election publicity head Hew Kuan Yau (better known as Superman) and former Jalong assemblyman Leong Mee Meng.

A party insider confirmed that Dyana Sofya’s name had been included by Perak DAP as one of the four proposed candidates to contest for the vacant seat.

“It is an attempt by the Perak DAP to ensure someone, who is aligned to them, contests the seat,” said the source, adding that it was a known fact that state party chairman Nga Kor Ming did not see eye to eye with Hew and Leong.

Former member of parliament Seah Leong Peng is said to be aligned to national vice-chairman M. Kulasegaran.

The source said the state leadership might propose Dyana Sofya as the preferred candidate but local sentiments might be against her.

“They feel that she has yet to be fully tested as she is still a newbie to the party,” said the source. Dyana Sofya, joined the party in 2012.

The social media is also abuzz with calls to the party leadership not to consider Hew and Leong.

Adding fuel to the issue was Seah’s wife, Kee Siu Lian. She recently told the vernacular media that it was her late husband’s dying wish to see either Hew or Leong contest the seat.

There is also, however, support for Hew and Leong.

Teluk Intan DAP member Yong Hwa Pooi in his posting said Hew was more than qualified to contest in the seat.

“He is a PhD holder and well-known among the locals.”

An initial DAP post-mortem of the polls results showed that Malay support for the party edged up at least two per cent but Chinese and Indian votes plunged more than 10% for each community.

Race, age stand in the way of DAP’s new politics

NEWS ANALYSIS BY THE MALAYSIAN INSIDER

Lim Kit Siang (second from left) had campaigned for his political secretary in Teluk Intan on the basis of eschewing racial politics, but his words fell on deaf ears, as shown in yesterday's results. – The Malaysian Insider pic, June 1, 2014.Lim Kit Siang (second from left) had campaigned for his political secretary in Teluk Intan on the basis of eschewing racial politics, but his words fell on deaf ears, as shown in yesterday’s results. – The Malaysian Insider pic, June 1, 2014.

The huge disappointment on the faces of DAP leaders Lim Guan Eng and Lim Kit Siang said it all last night. They gambled on Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud to keep the Teluk Intan federal seat, but the political unknown lost by 238 votes to Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong.

That she lost by such a razor-thin margin was not lost on the DAP leaders. But Dyana still lost due to the racial mindset of the elderly electorate and the disinterest by young voters who did not come back for the Saturday by-election.

“Race is still relevant in elections, but we are trying to make it irrelevant,” Guan Eng, the DAP secretary-general, told The Malaysian Insider in reference to the Chinese-based party’s push for more Malay candidates.

“We would have won if the outstation voters came back,” Guan Eng added, in an oblique reference to the younger generation who work outside Teluk Intan and who are more issues-oriented rather than voting according to racial lines.

A hollow victory for BN, a lesson for DAP

FREE YOURSAY

‘The majority is less than spoilt votes, and BN has postal votes.’

Unofficial: Mah wins, majority 238 votes

Apa Nama: Malaysia still has long way to break the back of racial politics. It was an excellent and risky try by DAP, which they could have won if the voters turnout is more that 70 percent.

There is nothing to proud about the BN win since they poured a lot of money and their propaganda might have instill fear into certain voters, especially the older generation who would have likely swung their votes to Gerakan candidate Mah Siew Keong.

Anyway, congratulations to Mah. To DAP candidate Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, do not give up. Please set up a DAP centre at Teluk Intan since you have 49 percent voters supporting you.

Rest assured that in GE 2017 or 2018, you will have a high chance to win this seat. Dyana, you and DAP has worked hard even the BN and MSM (mainstream media) hit you from all sides.

It was unfortunate that the older generation outnumbered younger ones who did not return in big numbers to swing the votes towards DAP.

Fairnessforall: This clearly tells us that the Chinese will only vote for a Chinese candidate. Sad but true.

Had DAP put a Chinese as the candidate, they would have won with a huge majority. The contest was not between DAP and BN, it was between a Malay and a Chinese.

It looks like we can never get away from this racist attitude.

Basically: With a majority less than spoilt votes, and BN’s upper hand with postal votes, army votes and the Rela ‘we’ll have new uniforms’ voters, it’s a hollow victory for Mah.

But as experience will tell us, they don’t really care. Congrats to Dyana. For a newbie, it was a tremendous result and if it was a fair and properly run election, I wager she would have won.

Alex52: Indeed, Dyana, no regret, you still won. The low turnout and that you came from somewhere and not being a local, you still received very high support, with Mah winning just with a razor-thin margin.

Atilla: DAP lost simply because many voters had taken for granted of a DAP win and this caused a low voters turnout. Nevertheless, it was a marvelous fight put up by Dyana.

CQ Muar: Speechless, stunned. At the early stage, Dyana was leading by 2,000 over majority, only to watch the figure dwindled. Nevertheless, upon reflection, I reckon Dyana did extremely well for a newbie compared to that Umno running dog.

A slim figure of 238 – no big deal despite BN’s hefty machinery and huge sums spent (at whose’ expense?). Come GE14, there’s no way Mah can out do Dyana, especially with a full voter turnout.

The scenario will then be an entirely different ball game altogether. Nil desperandum.

CiViC: For the first time unofficial results are spot on with official results. That only happens when BN wins. And how convenient for EC to revise the voters turnout figure after results announced. Anyway, we expected this to happen.

Multi Racial: It is alright to lose, DAP and Dyana. It is better to lose now than to lose later. Learn from this loss and come back stronger.

There are people within DAP probably getting arrogant. Pakatan itself is to be blamed for bringing up the hudud law again.
DAP Perak is disunited, which is quite obvious, and they need to put country and party above their personal interest.

Remember the Ijok by-election in 2007 where Khalid Ibrahim lost? But he came back strongly in GE12. Not just that, the entire Pakatan came back stronger.

I hope Pakatan and DAP will learn from this loss. There is a saying – lose the contest but don’t lose the lesson.

Emkay: From this by-election, it is clear that we need our young to deliver us from the clutches of BN.

Dap Perak under Ngeh and Nga got some serious credibility issues. I say Perakians did the right thing to give the state back to BN during GE13. Next GE Dap got to remove proxy aduns like Howard Lee if they are really serious about running a clean and transparent govt.

Win/success formula: right person right place right time and know your competitor.
Right person? Malay against Chinese (know your competitor). They do not put Malay in Chinese majority area.
Right place? Semi-urban town; expect voters not looking at big picture.
Right time? By-election; expect low turnout so ensure support base is not eroded.
If this win formula is not apply for GE14, expect result like Teluk Intan.
