SINGAPORE SEEN THIS URBAN JUNGLE
NOW, AT LAST, THE ‘UNCLE’ REPLIES.
You’re just ‘bo liao’, Ms Jesslyn Tan: Man hits back at Miss Singapore finalist who mocked him for having holes in shirt

Mr Koh Hee Huat, the subject of Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan’s mockery a week ago, has hit back at her comments about his ‘holey’ shirt.
…
Speaking to MyPaper at Ye Shanghai Teochew Muay stall in Bukit Merah View where he works, Mr Koh said that what she did was ‘wuliao’. ‘Wuliao’ means meaningless, or lame, in Mandarin.
“There was no need for her to take a photograph of me while I was sleeping,” he said.
According to MyPaper, Mr Koh has worked at the porridge stall for the past 20 years, taking the MRT from his home in Woodlands — an hour-long commute.
He works from 5pm to 3.30am daily, taking orders and dishing out food.
“I work long hours so I can put my daughter through school,” said Mr Koh, whose daughter is about to start school at a polytechnic in Singapore.
When asked if he has changed his attire because of the incident, the humble worker said he did not think

People can be EXTREMELY UNFORGIVING as Jesslyn Tan now discovers. One mistake tho unintended is ONE mistake too many http://weehingthong.wordpress.com/2014/03/22/jesslyn-tan-miss-universe-singapore-finalist-2013-stirs-up-a-hornets-nest/ …

This sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
“Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Indranee Rajah defends uncle in ‘holey’ T-shirt saga”
My questions are, “Who will defend Jesslyn Tan from the hordes of attackers taking advantage of the situation to attack her? Who will defend her from the cyber bullying?”

THE HOLE, WHICH JESSLYN TAN, MISS UNIVERSE SINGAPORE FINALIST 2013, INADVERTENTLY DUG FOR HERSELF, SEEMS TO BE TURNING INTO A BOTTOMLESS PIT THAT THREATENS TO SWALLOW HER, PERSON AND ALL!
IT ALL BEGAN INNOCENTLY ENOUGH BUT NOW IT DOESN’T SEEM ANYTHING BUT TROUBLE FOR HER!

The whole matter won’t blow over for some time. Maybe a long, long time. Not now that a politician has got involved.
And not just any politician but Senior Minister of State for Law and Education, Indranee Rajah. That spells Trouble with a Capital T!
SHE IS BOTH A SENIOR MINISTER AND A POLITICIAN. Expect her to make hay while the sun shines…
Never mind the fact that Jesslyn has apologized, and that some days ago! The Senior Minister surely knows that!

Mr Koh initially thought of quitting in the wake of this, but his boss encouraged him to stay. His boss told me that he has known Mr Koh since he was boy and he is a very good worker. When Mr Koh’s father passed away, he asked the boss to take care of Mr Koh, which the boss promised to do. The boss is determined to keep that promise.
My grassroots leaders and I encouraged Mr Koh to stay too. We told him that this will pass. He doesn’t surf the net and he wasn’t aware that many have people expressed support for him.
So if you are in the area and have a yen for teochew muay, do go and give Mr Koh a word of encouragement or a thumbs up. He’s very much part of our Bukit Merah family, and just like whenever a family member feels down, it helps when others rally round to give a morale booster. And if anyone merits a boost it is this quiet, hardworking, unassuming man. He may not be sibei trendy, but he is definitely “sibei ho”.
As for Ms Tan, I am glad that she has apologised, albeit online and not to Mr Koh directly. She says she has learnt from this and would be very mindful of social media in the future.
I do hope so.
We still do not sufficiently appreciate the impact that what we do or say can have on others, especially via social media. The consequences are often unintended, but by then it is too late. The old adage “the pen is mightier than the sword” still holds true in the internet age, even though the keyboard has replaced the pen. A sword cuts deep, but words can cut deeper. We need to have a care in what we say about others.

AN UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE!

Jesslyn Tan couldn’t have imagined this happening: the man she mocked now wants to quit his job.
Posted on 21 March 2014
Following Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan’s facebook post poking fun at an uncle wearing a T-shirt with holes, and her facebook apology, the uncle wants to quit after working at a porridge stall for more than 28 years.
According to Shin Min Daily News, a netizen revealed that the uncle is working at the famous Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge (夜上海潮洲粥) in Bukit Merah view.
The uncle’s boss, Mr Wu, revealed that after the photo of the uncle was publicised, he feels embarrassed, and that he has also embarrassed his relatives and friends. Mr Wu asked him to stay, and told him to let him think about how to solve the issue.

Miss Universe Singapore finalist, Jesslyn Tan, APOLOGIZES.
Fortunately, the comments on her FB page are supportive, unlike this on Twitter.
…
You have good friends with supporting comments here, Jess. These are the people you should listen to. it’s so very clear that half of the local population lack humor, and dwell on attacking any “news” & people that make headlines. Those are truly the ugly, mean ones who have no regard to the hurt they bring with rude swearing.
So yeah.. Be careful who you befriend on FB and refrain from posting personal opinions on social platforms. It’s a cruel world out there.

Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan mocked the attire of a man whose photo she uploaded on her facebook page — a post which the man’s daughter has responded to.
Jesslyn Tan, 25, is a university graduate and one of the finalists in the Miss Universe Singapore beauty pageant last year.
She had posted a photo showing a man wearing a t-shirt with holes on her facebook page, and wrote: “Holey moley. Sibei trendy worzxxz.”
…
She (the man’s daughter) responded: “He’s my dad. Not everyone is as lucky as you making money based on looks. We don’t have money to buy fancy clothes all the time. So what if there is a hole in the shirt. It’s nothing [to be] shameful about.
“Rather, your act of laughing at others having a hole in the shirt is shameful. What if your dad is being made fun of? Think about it, Jesslyn Tan and the rest of you.”

The Independent Singapore
Jesslyn Tan: Poor anger management?

“Being able to be Miss Universe does not make you a better person than others. Being rich is not always about money… it’s also about being well-mannered and mindful of others. Beauty not only on your face but most importantly in your heart! Go back and see where you come from (sic.),” said one Haza Ishak.
On Tan’s own Facebook page, the daughter of the elderly man in the photograph came to her father’s defence.
“He’s my dad. Not everyone is as lucky as you, making money off looks. We do not have the money to buy fancy clothes. But so what if there is a hole in my father’s shirt? There is nothing to be ashamed about!” said a red-face Cindy Tan.
Jesslyn Tan will be the unfortunate Anton Casey replica, just so we can have our anger issues sorted out.
Singaporeans’ anger towards Jesslyn Tan reveals a deeper issue within the social landscape of this society. We are at our height of resentment against those who have too much while many of us struggle to make ends meet.
