Pakatan agrees Azizah is sole MB candidate

Pakatan Rakyat parties have agreed to nominate PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as their sole choice as Selangor menteri besar today, after hours of inter-PKR and inter-Pakatan deliberations.
…
Top Pakatan leaders Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang, Mohamad Sabu and Lim Guan Eng were present at the press conference.
PAS’ support for either Wan Azizah or Azmin, declared this morning after its central committee meeting, meant that Khalid no longer has a majority in the state assembly.
The beleaguered menteri besar, who managed to hold on to his post despite his expulsion from PKR, will meet the Sultan once the latter returns from an overseas trip on Aug 27.

IT’S AZIZAH AFTER RAYA, speculation grows with deputy MB posts for PAS, DAP also on the cards
After mounting pressure from its Pakatan Rakyat allies and party members, PKR has purportedly decided to replace Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim after the Aidilfitri celebrations.
It is learnt that PKR defacto leader Anwar Ibrahim met with party leaders in Selangor last night, and proposed his wife and party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the new Menteri Besar.
Anwar was quoted by Chinese language daily China Press as saying that the party has decided to remove Khalid.
According to a party source, Anwar had reportedly managed to obtain the support of his party leaders after having convinced the political bureau of his choice.
The source claimed he had decided on Azizah to “stabilise” the party, plagued by a series of controversies since holding its second direct internal elections early this year.
“Who would dare go against Anwar? Perhaps, they would grumble behind his back but in front of him, they are all yes men,” said a source, who requested anonymity.
If Kajang assemblywoman Azizah makes it to the post, she will be among two other PKR women leaders holding state executive councillors posts in the state government.

Ruckus over PKR banner of tearful Wan Azizah

A short commotion broke between PKR leaders and a 30-member team of enforcement officers from the Election Commission (EC) which removed over 30 banners and three billboards at Sungai Chua, Kajang.
The two groups argued for about 30 minutes at 4.30pm today when the EC officers claimed several banners had carried provocative words.
Several party supporters and locals were seen obstructing the enforcement team by standing in front of the banners.
At the same time, PKR campaign team representative K. Anantha Kannan negotiated with one of their leaders, trying to get them to stop.
“Which banner is provocative? They did not inform us in advance,” he told Malaysiakini.
Anantha Kannan said the EC officers then pointed out a banner bearing photograph of PKR candidate Wan Azizah Wan Ismail shedding tears and the phrase of ‘you’ll never walk alone’
Gooi, who is a practicing lawyer, questioned how the support showed by Wan Azizah for her husband Anwar Ibrahim would commit an offence of provocation and sedition.

RACIST STATEMENT OF THE WEEK
Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Joseph Kurup, at Kajang, “Vote for BN’s candidate that is one from your own race.”
He was giving out goodies in his ‘Sayangi Komuniti’ programme organised by the Kajang Rukun Tetangga, that is under the government’s National Unity Department.
As most of the recipients are Chinese, Kurup’s speech in Bahasa Malaysia is translated to Mandarin.

The rub is this: Malay Muslim voters who are inclined to support BN are saying they aren’t comfortable supporting a Chinese Malaysian candidate over a Malay Muslim one.

In Kajang, race still matters

Ethnicity is again making its presence felt in politics, and in the Kajang by-election, it is having unexpected results.
Barisan Nasional, which created a national communal paradigm of one party for each race and each person to his own race-party, is now seeing that concept used against itself.
Meanwhile Pakatan Rakyat, which prides itself on being race-blind, is now boosting its support from the Malay Muslim community, whether consciously or unconsciously, because of its candidate’s race.
…
BN activists and leaders have confirmed that such thinking exists among their Kajang supporters, adding that these voters are thinking of staying at home come polling day on March 23.
Pakatan activists have also admitted that Wan Azizah’s ethnicity is a bonus for their campaign. This is welcomed as the party has had problems attracting Malay Muslim support.

Kak Wan buys replacement for her Bata shoes
2.30pm: Tesco patrons were seen flipping out their mobile phones and tablets to get a shot of Wan Azizah, who paid the hypermarket at Saujana Impian a visit today.
Flashing her Tesco card, Wan Azizah also stopped at the value buy section of Bata to buy a replacement for her pair.
Taking off her shoe, she points at the label Bata to Malaysiakini to prove that she really does wear Bata shoes.
While she peruses the value buy section, a man yells: “I love you, Datuk Seri!”
Most shoppers are happy to accept the leaflet entitled ‘Cerita Kak Wan’ which describes her struggles in politics.
…
The party also slammed BN for belittling Wan Azizah on social media through a ‘10 things why you shouldn’t vote Wan Azizah’ list.
“They try to make her out as a normal housewife. She is not.”
PKR will also release its own list of 10 reasons why people should vote for Wan Azizah.
One of them, Selangor PKR director of strategy Khalid Jaafar says, is Wan Azizah’s international stature.
“She was selected as the cover story for internationally renowned magazine Newsweek. Someone put on the cover is not a small fry,” he said.

Wan Azizah to replace Anwar in Kajang?
Anwar hopes his wife can once again help him fight the battle to take over Putrajaya, starting with Kajang.
PETALING JAYA: PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail looks set to be thrown into mainstream politics once again after being considered as the frontrunner to replace Anwar Ibrahim as the candidate for the Kajang state seat by-elections.
A party insider told FMT today that Wan Azizah was being asked to replace Anwar to keep the party’s Kajang Move scheme afloat.
“Only she is seen as the most capable candidate to pull through the party’s plan, and to be the Selangor Menteri Besar,” said the insider.
“Within the inner circle of PKR, it is quite certain that Wan Azizah will be the replacement candidate, with Anwar leading the campaigning.
“What needs to be done now is to sell this idea to our Pakatan allies and that will be done in the course of the Pakatan congress which is underway now,” added the insider.
Kajang Move is a scheme put together by party’s strategic director Rafizi Ramli and a few others to enable Anwar to contest in the state seat, and then to eventually replace Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim so that Pakatan Rakyat will be in a much better position to take over Putrajaya in the next general election.
