Chua Soi Lek, MCA President: Will he or won’t he go?
Liow Tiong Lai, the next MCA President?

Malaysiakini

‘He is weak’, ‘He is indecisive’ and ‘He is not a fighter’ screamed The Star‘s front page today, all this in neat speech bubbles in reference to MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai.
The MCA-owned English daily’s unflattering but creatively presented headline quoting party president Chua Soi Lek has left Liow fuming.
“It’s too much, it’s really too much. This is really abusing the newspaper.
“He (Chua) is using the newspaper’s front page to whack me because of a personal grudge. The Star should be more professional,” Liow told Malaysiakini when contacted.
However, Liow said he sympathised with the situation that The Star had to face under Chua.
“I sympathise with the professional and ethical employees of the paper. Having to be made use for a personal agenda is despicable. I feel very sorry,” he said.

“It’s cruel!”. That’s how MCA central committee member Ong Ka Chuan has described the manoeuvring by party president Chua Soi Lek to discredit his deputy, Liow Tiong Lai.
He was referring to next week’s the planned extraordinary general meeting (EGM) initiated by Chua’s faction which among others, seeks to censure Liow.
According to Bernama, Ong (below) had urged the party to abort the EGM scheduled for Oct 20 as it would merely be a platform for Liow bashing.
He said he could not see the rationale for the EGM as the party would be holding its annual general meeting in December.
“I am not siding Liow, but he represents the young people who are trained to take over the leadership at all levels in the party.
“If we are to hold an EGM to criticise a leader from the group, I think it is cruel,” he told reporters in Ipoh today.

The MCA EGM is on 20 October, 2013
The EGM will vote on the following four resolutions:
- To censure Liow for 1) his refusal to accept and respect the collective decision of the presidential council and central committee in which he participated, e.g. disciplinary cases etc; 2) for failing in his duty as general election preparation committee chairperson 3) tarnishing the party’s image by provoking infighting.
- To revoke the party resolution passed at the AGM of 2011 and 2012 in order to enable members to accept ministerial, deputy ministerial or any other cabinet posts;
- That party members shall accept appointments as senators or any other positions in government, e.g. hospital board members and in government-linked companies;
- That party members shall accept appointments at the state-level, such as state exco, council members, village heads and any other state government posts as deemed essential for the party.

In an immediate reaction, Liow said that he was being made the subject of revenge during this EGM and is prepared to face it.

MCA today resolved to hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on October 20 which, among others, will vote on a resolution to censure the party’s deputy president Liow Tiong Lai.
After a two hour emergency MCA central committee meeting today, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek stressed that the proposed resolutions were “very important” and it was not aimed at sniping anyone.
“The resolutions are very important, particularly about whether we are able to hold government positions.
“We will stop anyone from holding press conference and displaying banners in the MCA headquarters on that day and the day before it,” said Chua.

Soi Lek moves against his rivals: MCA seen calling for EGM tomorrow
The Emergency MCA Central Committee (CC) meeting tomorrow will likely give the green light for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to be held in order to revoke the “no cabinet position” decision, taken by the party prior to the 13th General Election.
…
On Sept 9, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and 13 other central committee members handed a petition calling for an EGM to reinstate former organising secretary Datuk Tee Siew Keong who was suspended by the central committee.
However, their request had to be put on hold as there was a lack of time to conduct the EGM because the new batch of central delegates was to be elected on Sept 22.
“Now since the election of the central delegates are over and with two groups having requested for an EGM, it would likely happen. In this case, I believe the party president will use his presidential power to shorten the notice of the EGM. With the emergency CC meeting on tomorrow, the earliest notice can be sent out is the following day (Friday) and the EGM may be held on Oct 13, which is on a Sunday,” said Yap.
Party sources said with the latest move by those aligned to Dr Chua, Liow and his supporters were left without much choice but to face the EGM.

Some 500 MCA central delegates and grassroots leaders gathered at a hotel opposite the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today for a briefing on alleged wrongdoings of their president, Dr Chua Soi Lek.
The gathering was led by the party’s Wangsa Maju division chief Yew Teong Look.
Most of those present demanded that Chua answers their questions pertaining to the party’s assets.
Among others, Yew alleged that Chua sold an eight-acre plot of land belonging to MCA to a developer early this year.
He claimed that the land, handed over during the leadership of former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik, was donated by the late Chinese entrepreneur Loh Boon Siew to build a second MCA headquarters and training centre.
However, Yew said, the land was sold to property developer Mah Sing Group for RM8 million earlier this year.
…
On MCA-owned English daily The Star, Yew said the company, in which MCA held a 42 percent share, had declared a total of RM759 million in dividends.
“MCA received RM319 million from its shares in The Star alone and not counting other incomes. But the president said the party had gained RM107 million.
“The balance is RM212 million and the question is, where have the balance money gone to?

Chua and senior MCA leaders to make way
Last updated on 1 October 2013 – 10:11pm
KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 1, 2013): There is a good possibility that MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and three senior party leaders will make way for younger blood in the upcoming party elections.
In a closed-door meeting with Kelantan MCA leaders recently, Chua hinted that he and three vice-presidents would not seek re-election, Nanyang Siang Pau reported today.
A party source told the daily that during the meeting, Chua expressed his wish for a younger team to lead the party. He singled out the trio of Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung and Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai.

The BUSINESS of MCA – Tong Kooi Ong
Written by Tong Kooi Ong
Recently, the President of MCA proudly declared that under his leadership, since March 2010, the party made RM107 million. I like to share a few interesting analysis, comments and questions..
…
4. Since March 2010 under the present President, the stock price of Star Publications (M) Bhd has dropped from RM3.35 to RM2.40 presently (or by 28.4%). Unrealised capital loss for MCA is RM297.8 million!
During this same period, Bursa Malaysia’s Composite Index gained a whopping 33%.
Firstly, I was surprised that the President of MCA articulated on making money as a political party. But even if that was an objective, it actually lost almost RM300 million instead. To be kinder, adding back dividends paid, it broke-even.
Don’t get me wrong. I have no interest in MCA politics. As an analyst, the recent debates call for an analysis of the facts. And in so doing, questions beg to be answered. – tongkooiong.com

Liow Tiong Lai, “During the pre-election house-to-house campaign, we, including the woman, were given negative remarks and insult (by the people) because we have such a leader.
“They even ask us about the VCD,” said Liow, who has had a very thorny relationship with Chua since the general election.
Malaysiakini

MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai has shot back at MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek’s supporters for blaming him over MCA’s poor electoral performance and instead claimed that the latter’s sex scandal was primary reason.
“The reasons of our massive defeat was because we have a morally tainted president,” said Liow during a press conference at Kuala Lumpur today.
Liow was responding to proposed extraordinary general meeting (EGM) resolutions drawn by twenty MCA central committee members aligned to Chua.
Among others, a resolution sought to censure Liow for allegedly failing in his duties as the general election preparation committee chairperson to make the necessary preparations, implementing an effective strategy and having good media relations.
To justify his claim, Liow said BN component parties had shunned Chua during the general election campaign in May because of his past indiscretions, which involved a tryst with a “personal friend” caught on video.

The MCA: WHAT’S AHEAD? NOTHING MUCH IF IT REMAINS UNCHANGED….

In the May 5 general election, the MCA won only seven parliamentary seats and 11 state seats out of the 37 parliamentary seats and 90 state seats it contested — less than half the federal seats it took in 2008.
THE PRESENT IS ALREADY BLEAK, AND THE FUTURE? WILL THE MCA BE CONFINED TO SHADOWLAND. A PLACE WHERE IT EXISTS BUT ALWAYS IN UMNO’S SHADOW?
MCA lost badly. Why? For being UMNO’s DOG….
