Anwar disagrees with Penang’s stand on Tanda Putera, says decision is flawed

BY HASBULLAH AWANG CHIK

Latest Update: August 30, 2013 05:11 pm

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim disagrees with the Penang government’s advisory to cinema operators in the state not to screen the controversial film, Tanda Putera.

“The Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is only advising, not banning the screening of Tanda Putera. I personally do not agree with the Penang government’s move,” he said today after giving his Merdeka Day address at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

He said the Penang government’s decision is flawed as “Malaysia is an independent country and everyone was entitled to their views.”

Anwar agreed with Lim’s contention that the film was made to help Barisan Nasional.

“What is regretful is that the film promotes Barisan Nasional propaganda and even the director herself, Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, admitted that the film is a work of fiction.

“It is overly done, the film is promoted in Felda schemes, schools, universities and probably in every lesson in the National Civics Bureau (BTN).

“We are a free country, but you don’t promote it like it is a communist-style propaganda,” the Permatang Pauh MP said.

Poor turnout for three screenings of Tanda Putera at Mid Valley

Controversial film Tanda Putera, whose producers were denied approval to screen it three times in the last year, drew few viewers at its first public screening in a local mall today.

The government movie directed by Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba had 12 viewers in the large cinema hall at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.

The 1pm and 4.20pm shows saw a collective turnout of 25 patrons.

Ministry to refer to AG on Penang’s Tanda Putera ‘ban’

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry will refer to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action regarding the decision of the Penang state government to ban the screening of
the film Tanda Putera.

Its minister, Ahmad Shabery Cheek said a meeting between the ministry and the AG’s Chambers would be held this afternoon to look at any suitable provisions in the law that could be adopted.

“The jurisdiction on issuing licences to the theatres lies with the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas). (Meanwhile) the jurisdiction on the opening or building of a theatre and so on, lies with the local government.

“Thus, if a conflict such as this occurs, we will look into matters that can be done or otherwise from the legal perspective. We respect the law, to us, this is something new,” he said when commenting on the banning of the screening of the patriotic film, Tanda Putera, in Penang.

ONLY 5 ORDINARY PEOPLE WATCHED THE OPENING SHOW. THE OTHER 7 WERE JOURNALISTS!

MISLEADING AND UNHELPFUL REPORTING BY FREE MALAYSIA TODAY

We are told by the article in Free Malaysia Today that the first showing of Tanda Putera at GSC Mid Valley attracted only a dozen people. Of the dozen, the majority were journalists. That means that 5 (FIVE!) non-journalists watched the show.

Thus, the headline, Audience: Tanda Putera not offensive to DAP, refers to only those five non-journalists. Wow! We thought that the audience would be, say 200 people? If 200 said that Lim Kit Siang’s reservations about the movie were uncalled for, that would mean something.  Now we know that the statement Moviegoers say DAP leader Lim Kit Siang’s reservations about the movie is not called for is interesting but hardly helpful.

When we read the following, we can’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the report!

Insurance broker Hanim Azira Mohd Taib, 29, felt that Tanda Putera only depicted historical facts.

“The movie only showed historical facts. We should now appreciate the sacrifices of our past leaders and the stability of this nation,” she said.

Historical facts? The director of the show has already admitted that it is not historical but a work of fiction.

Lotus cinemas to also not screen Tanda Putera

GEORGE TOWN: Penangites would have to dump the idea of catching the Tanda Putera movie after all, as the last of the remaining cinemas, the Lotus Five Star Cinemas (LFS), here had also decided to not screen the movie.

With LFS’ withdrawal from the screening, the entire Penang is deprived of Tanda Putera movie in cinemas, after Golden Screen Cinemas’ (GSC) decision not to screen the show earlier.

Even TGV’s sole cinema at 1st Avenue has removed the movie from its listing online.

GSC pulls the plug on Tanda Putera in Penang

Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) has decided not to screen the controversial movie Tanda Putera in its cinemas in Queensbay Mall and Sunway Carnival in Penang.

In a press statement today, the cinema giant’s management said the decision was made in compliance with the Penang government’s directive issued yesterday.

The management said they had received the letter issued by the Penang Municipal Council dated yesterday asking it not to screen the movie.

“GSC would be conducting a refund exercise for customers who have purchased tickets for Tanda Putera from 5pm onwards today,” said the statement.

“Customers are to provide proof of purchase, that is, GSC Box office ticket, GSC e-Payment Confirmation ID, GSC SelfPrint tickets or GSC Mobile App (iPhone / Android) confirmation number at the box office counter of the relevant cinemas to claim the refunds,” the management added.

When contacted, both TGV and Lotus Cinemas had yet to make a decision on the matter.

GEORGE TOWN: Film operators have no choice but to screen the Tanda Putera movie, as it is categorised under the must-screen rule (Syarat Wajib Tayang) by the authorities.

A cinema owner contacted by the New Straits Times said the movie had to be screened for at least a week as per the guidelines set by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas).

“All local movies must be played. We cannot take instructions from anyone, which includes the state government, on this matter.

“If we do not comply, we might get our licenses revoked.” said the spokesman of a cinema chain who did not wanted to be named earlier.

If cinema operators in Penang do not screen controversial movie Tanda Putera tomorrow, they risk having their licences revoked, director Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba warned tonight.

She was reacting to a call by the Penang state government to cinemas not to screen the movie on the May 13 riots.

“As far as we are concerned the screening should go on as scheduled by FINAS Wajib Tayang Committee.

“If the cinema operators do not screen the film as scheduled, their licences can be revoked by FINAS,” she said tonight.

Penang asks cinemas to not screen Tanda Putera

The Penang government will request cinemas in the state to not screen ‘Tanda Putera’, which is scheduled for release nationwide tomorrow.

State exco member Chow Kon Yeow, who is in charge of local government and thus cinema licences, said his department will issue the written request today.

“We have no control over the content of the film, (which is the prerogative of) Finas (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia).

“However, in view of the sensitive nature of the movie, we are directing the two local councils (in Penang and Seberang Perai) to write in to ask the cooperation of the cinemas to not screen the movie,” he told a press conference.

Referring to the urinating scene in the movie, which purported portrayed a young Lim Kt Siang uriniating on a flag pole with the Malaysian flag on it, she said, “That incident did happen but no one could identify who was the one who did it.”

Last year, Lim criticised the production company when it uploaded a photograph of him being arrested by the police, with a caption “Lim Kit Siang urinating on the flagpole at the home of Selangor Menteri Besar” on the film’s official Facebook page.

It was later removed after the company received numerous complaints. – August 24, 2013.

The director of the controversial film Tanda Putera, which has upset the opposition, now admits it is a fictional account of events surrounding the May 13 racial riots.

Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba said her film is an interpretation of historical events derived from multiple opinions.

She explained that after certain parties strongly objected to a scene where a character urinated at a flagpole in front of the house of a former Selangor menteri besar, she edited the scene to tone it down.

Suhaimi’s admission that the film is a fictional account of events is a comedown from her stand at the film’s premiere this week where she asked the public to give the film a chance since it is about the nation’s history based on “true stories”.

Why am I featured in Tanda Putera’s official FB urinating on flag pole – Kit Siang

Written by Lim Kit Siang

I am supposed to be assured by the clarification of the director of the May 13 film,  Tanda Putera, Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba that I am not even featured in the footage of the film, but I am not.

This is because Shuhaimi has failed to give a satisfactory explanation why  I had been featured and defamed in Tanda Putera’s original official Facebook page as having urinated at the flagpole bearing the Selangor flag at the residence of the then Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Harun Idris and provoking the May 13, 1969 riots.

The caption of a photo portraying me being manhandled, which were later taken down, read:  “Lim Kit Siang telah kencing di bawah tiang bendera Selangor yang terpacak di rumah menteri besar Selangor ketika itu, Harun Idris” . The photo and caption was posted in the album in the “Tanda Putera” Facebook titled “Peristiwa-peristiwa yang dimuatkan di dalam filem ini” (Events depicted in this movie).

Shuhaimi’s explanation that  the creators of the film had received many photographs from netizens which were shared on the Facebook page, including the offending picture, and that it was removed from the Facebook page after complaints were received about the photo, is neither credible nor acceptable.

This is because the defamatory and baseless allegation that I had urinated at the flagpole at the Selangor Mentri Besar’s residence, and provoked the May 13, 1969 riots,  was made by Tanda Putera official Facebook page itself, and not a “shared information” from netizens – conveying  the very clear impression that it was abstracted from the film proper itself.

Unless there is a satisfactory and adequate explanation or accounting for the defamatory reference featuring me in the Tanda Putera official Facebook page, I reserve the right to take legal action against such defamation.

It is most  deplorable and reprehensible that Shuhaimi had taken almost four long weeks since the first publication by Malaysiakini of its report “New May 13 movie courts controversy” on 20th July 2012, to state that I am not even featured in the footage of the film – allowing the legion of UMNO/BN cybertroopers to escalate their campaign of downright lies and dangerous falsehoods based on the movie’s alleged  “urination” episode to accuse me of provoking the May 13, 1969 riots  although I had repeatedly explained that I was not in Kuala Lumpur on May 11, 12 and 13, 1969.

Director: Creative licence used in Tanda Putera
2:31PM Aug 23, 2013

Creative licence was used in ‘Tanda Putera’ to adapt historical events into a film, its director Shuhaimi Baba explained.

In an interview with magazine Timeout Kuala Lumpur’s August 2013 edition, she said this was not something that could be avoided by any filmmaker.

“‘Tanda Putera’ is a feature film – an interpretation based on historical events with the May 13 incident as the opening backdrop.

“Like any movie, you need to stitch your story together so you can’t avoid using creative licence,” she was quoted as saying.

The film, when opens in cinemas next week after several postponements, first courted controversy when a picture of DAP MP Lim Kit Siang was uploaded onto the film’s Facebook page.

Under the picture, uploaded in an album of scenes from the film, was a caption saying that Lim had urinated on a flag pole at then Selangor menteri besar Harun Idris’s residence. It was later removed.

Lim was not in Kuala Lumpur on May 13, while a witness said that such an incident was “impossible” as the flag pole was inside the heavily-guarded fenced compound of the MB’s home.

In the film, a group of Chinese youth are shown urinating on a flag pole in front of the MB’s house, but Shuhaimi reportedly said nowhere does it show in the film that Lim was involved.

New May 13 movie courts controversy
4:21PM Jul 20, 2012

NONEThe trailer for the movie – fully funded by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) and the Multimedia Development Corporation (Mdec) – showed scenes of Chinese mobs marching through the streets of Kuala Lumpur after their success in municipal elections.

One group was depicted bearing the Labour Party flag, while that scene and others also showed Chinese Malaysians bearing banners proclaiming anti-Malay slogans.

The banners written in Chinese characters portrayed slogans that translated into ‘Malays go back to the village’, ‘Malays go die’ and ‘Take revenge’.

Garnering more serious brickbats are snippets from the movie’s official Facebook page which detailed scenes apparently slated to be included in the final cut of the movie.

One apparent scene was that of DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang purportedly urinating on a flagpole in front of the then-Selangor menteri besar’s residence.

The photo was posted in the album titled ‘Peristiwa-peristiwa yang dimuatkan di dalam filem ini’ (Events depicted in this movie).

However, the photo and caption has since been removed from the movie’s official page, though Malaysiakini had captured a screenshot of the earlier posting.

Tanda Putera to screen next week with controversial “urinating” scene

BY DIYANA IBRAHIM and HASBULLAH AWANG CHIK

Latest Update: August 22, 2013 11:57 am

The controversial Tanda Putera movie will begin screening in cinemas nationwide on August 29 with several contentious scenes still intact, including one depicting a young Chinese man urinating in front of the Selangor Menteri Besar’s official residence.

The film, directed by Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, was supposed to have been screened last year but was postponed three times due to opposition over its depiction of events surrounding the May 13, 1969 racial riots.

The media were invited to a screening of the movie on Tuesday night in Kuala Lumpur.

The director seemed to portray the Chinese community as being responsible for the May 13 riots.

Controversial dialogue include “Orang Melayu pergi balik kampung” (Malays return to your villages) and a murder scene in a cinema where Chinese characters are writing “Melayu pergi mati” (Malays go die) on the screen before the victim is stabbed.

Urinating scene ‘fictional’, says May 13 witness

A scene in the controversial film Tanda Putera, where a group of Chinese youths urinate on a flag pole at former Selangor menteri besar Harun Idris’ house is “fictional” and “impossible”, said a May 13, 1969, riot witness.
NONEAhmad Habib (seated right in picture), who was then a second year undergraduate student at Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM), said not only was the flagpole inside a heavily-guarded compound, the menteri besar himself was sitting in front of the flagpole.

“The MB’s house was surrounded by a brick wall. The first time I entered the compound was around 3am (on May 14). Thousands of people were sitting on the grass in front of the flagpole.

“Sitting in front of the flagpole was the ‘arwah‘ himself (the late Harun Idris) with a shotgun. He was so tired, he was sitting and using the shotgun as support. So it is ridiculous (to claim someone urinated on the flagpole),” Ahmad said.

Ahmad said he arrived in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, where the house is located, around 6pm on May 13 and left about 5am the next day.

Ahead of public screening, Tanda Putera director pleads for fair viewing

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba urged Malaysians today to watch “Tanda Putera” for themselves before judging the controversial film that has earned widespread criticism for its portrayal of events during the May 13, 1969, riots.

The film, which premiered to a select audience at the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in Gardens Mid Valley yesterday, is only scheduled to hit public cinemas next Thursday but already its Facebook page has drawn brickbats from online critics who labelled it a “racist” flick.

“Boycott GSC,” a Facebook user called Raymond Thong wrote in response to GCS’s Facebook post showing 10 photographs of yesterday’s screening.

Another Facebook user named Contest Chris called it a, “bloody racist movie. Thumbs down”.

She said yesterday’s screening was merely to a limited audience, which included, “both Malay and non-Malay supporters and friends”.

“Friends and friends of friends, supporters who never tire in giving us moral support, were there for us – Malays and non-Malays,” Shuhaimi said.
