ABU Video: ABU to ‘peacefully’ stop foreigners from voting

The ABU video featured Haris warning foreigners with MyKads that ABU ‘troops’ would be ready for them on polling day.

He also warns party hoppers that they will be “hunted down” and that there would shortly be a by-election. Haris also asks Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak whether he is “ready to die”.

ABU also repeated the warning in leaflets in foreign languages which it has widely distributed.

Asalkan Bukan Umno video offensive, says Ambiga
6:02PM Apr 9, 2013

Regime change advocacy group Asalkan Bukan Umno’s (ABU) video warning “instant citizens” – allegedly fast-tracked for citizenship in return for votes for the ruling party – from voting in the upcoming GE13 is “offensive”, said Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga.

She was quoted as saying this by the Yahoo! Malaysia news service, further warning ABU that an electoral process which is marred by violence does no credit to the elections.

NONE“The video is disturbing and I urge (ABU chief) Haris Ibrahim to withdraw it before things turn for the worse.

“And in my opinion – the worst-case scenario – Haris will frighten people off at the polls.

“And what we should stress on is to have a peaceful electoral process. We can’t interfere with any voters,” Ambiga said.

The senior lawyer said that while she respects Harris, his latest escapade may have stepped off the reservation.

“I have a lot of regard for him but this is totally unacceptable and I’m going to talk to him.”

Ambiga believes that to avoid dangerous incidents on polling day, the proper way to address anything suspicious at the polling stations is to note it down for further action via election petitions and not play vigilante.

The ‘Asalkan Bukan Umno’ (Anything But Umno) movement has acknowledged plans to stop foreigners in possession of Malaysian identity cards (ICs) from voting, but stressed this will be done “peacefully”.

This comes after flyers the movement has been distributing, ‘warning’ foreigners to refrain from voting, as well as a video uploaded on YouTube on Wednesday.

NONE“The ‘Warning’ flyers have one purpose, to stop foreigners from voting in the 13th general election, or face the wrath of the people,” ABU volunteer Jason Sanjeev Ganesan said at a press conference this morning.

“Our warning is not to be taken lightly. The Team Tahan (ABU Halang Asign Ngundi) have been arranged all over the country to defend the sanctity of the election process.”

However, ABU president Haris Ibrahim stressed that the move should not be perceived as hateful or xenophobic as ABU only wanted to “ensure the rakyat’s right is not violated by any party”.

“ABU does not intend to act violently towards anyone. Ours is a peaceful initiative,” he said.

Ahead of polls, Bersih warns of paranoia over migrants
8:18AM Mar 28, 2013

Electoral reform movement Bersih warned today that fears over phantom voters and electoral fraud are spawning xenophobic and racist attacks against migrants.

NONEThe group said it has received complaints about an ongoing demonisation of migrants in political ceramah sessions, online videos and leaflets.

“We are particularly disturbed by reports of online multimedia content and Facebook pages allegedly making partisan, xenophobic statements under the name of Bersih.

“We wish to state clearly that we do not condone racism and xenophobia,” the Bersih secretariat said in a press statement yesterday.

One such online video shows a local waking up to find foreigners in his home, who were supposedly registered as voters using his house address.

The video, uploaded by NasiKandar1957, ends with a display of Bersih’s logo.

Another example cited by Bersih is a leaflet written in the Bahasa Indonesia, Bangladeshi, Burmese and Arabic languages that warns foreigners not to vote during the general election.
