KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 – An activist movement has warned foreigners and phantom voters away from polling stations during Election 2013, saying they will be dealt with accordingly if they dared to sneak in their votes.

Anything But Umno (ABU), an opposition-friendly polls watchdog group, said it will be deploying special squads on polling day to ensure no phantom voter, foreigner or fake IC holder would dare loiter near polling stations.

“Please take this warning seriously. On polling day, ABU will be patrolling all stations and will deal with all foreigner who intend to defy this warning,” ABU leader Haris Ibrahim said in the group’s polls message on video-sharing site YouTube yesterday.

“Please. I emphasise again – take this warning seriously.”

The lawyer-turned-activist also urged Malaysians to assist ABU in its efforts to prevent electoral fraud by casting their ballots early on polling day.

He explained that voters could help ABU’s squads by staying near the polling stations after they have cast their ballots and even accompany the ballot boxes when they are being sent to the various tallying centres nationwide.

“Stay and defend the electoral process,” he appealed.

Fumbling Najib

(“I had an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and delivered the letter to dissolve the 12th Parliament (session) today, Wednesday, April 3,2012.”

Going by Najib’s speech, Parliament was dissolved last year and not 2013.

EC to decide on nomination, polling dates

Alyaa Azhar | April 3, 2013

Election Commission chairman, Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, says dates for nominations and polling will be decided once official notification of dissolution is received.

UPDATED

PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting soon to decide on the nomination and polling dates of the country’s 13th general election.

Its chairman, Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, in an interview with Astro Awani, said the EC would wait for the dissolution notice of all state assemblies before calling for the meeting.

“We must wait for the official letters from the Dewan Rakyat Speaker and the Speakers of the state assemblies to ensure they are legitimately dissolved,” said  Abdul Aziz.

“After receiving all those letters, we will call all members of the commission for a meeting to determine the date for nomination of candidates, the campaign period and polling day.

“We would like to hold simultaneous elections in all states. We will wait for all state assemblies to send their dissolution notices,” he added.

“Then we will hold a meeting and call for a press conference to announce the details.”

Pakatan states to announce dissolution tomorrow

It appears that Pakatan-administered states will only be able to announce the dissolution of their respective legislative bodies tomorrow.

Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abu Bakar has said that his audience with the Kedah Sultan, who is also the reigning Agong, is scheduled for tomorrow.

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had already received consent from the Selangor Sultan to do so and an official ceremony will be held at 2.30pm tomorrow.

At the time of writing, Kelantan has not made an official announcement on its plans.

Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he was meeting the Penang governor tomorrow to seek his permission.

“I received a fax from Najib – who said he had met with the Agong – and according to the constitution, he has the permission to dissolve Parliament to pave way for elections,” Lim told reporters after attending the state’s last executive council meeting.

“He asked my cooperation to dissolve at the same time. And if this happens, the relevant documents will be sent. The state exco (has) no problem with having the election (at the) same time with Parliament,” he added.

It’s on, finally – Parliament dissolved today

After months of playing a guessing game with voters, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has announced the dissolution of Parliament today, paving the way for the 13th general election.

NONEHe said this in a 15-minute ‘live’ telecast on all television stations at 11.30am, following an audience with the Agong early this morning.

“This morning I had met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and sought his permission to dissolve the Parliament. And he had given his consent for the same,” Najib announced.

However, Najib made a mistake during the live broadcast on the date of dissolution, reading the year 2013 as 2012.

“This morning, I have sought an audience with the Agong and delivered the instrument of dissolution to His Majesty for the consent to dissolve the 12th Parliament today, April 3, 2012.”

Najib called on all state assemblies to be dissolved today as well, to enable state and parliamentary polls to be held simultaneously.

The Election Commission (EC), according to law, will have to fix the date for the election, which must be held within 60 days.

“I advise all state leaders to face their respective heads of state to seek permission for dissolution of state assemblies as well so that we can have simultaneous elections across the country,” he said.

Najib, who was wearing a red tie, was flanked by his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, and made the announcement in the presence of all of his cabinet ministers.

The announcement falls on the fourth anniversary of Najib’s tenure as prime minister, and he asked the rakyat to remember the “transformation” that the government had been under way in the past four years under his leadership.

“In these four years you have witnessed the national transformation has taken place,” he said, stressing that his is a “responsible” government.
