Soi Lek: PM says plenty more time before GE13

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had informed BN component chiefs that there was still plenty more time before the 13th general election, said MCA president Chua Soi Lek.

“Yesterday, I attended the third round of meetings to finalise the list of election candidates.

I asked the prime minister how long more do I have to provide new names for the candidate list, he said there was still a lot more time.

“I don’t understand what he meant but I feel syok (good) that there is a lot more time,” he told bemused party members at the MCA headquarters when launching its 1,000-day report card tonight.

Chua added he had asked the premier if MCA should announce its candidate list earlier in light of DAP’s move to deploy its heavyweights there but the premier had given the same reply that there was still a lot more time.

DID NAJIB MAKE FOOLS OF DONG ZONG ON APRIL FOOL’S DAY?

The premier’s failure to pledge recognition of United Examination Certificate (UEC) is reflective of the fact that he has been manipulating the United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong), said DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

Saying this was intended to raise false hopes among Chinese Malaysians, he said Najib Abdul Razak has “completely no political will to solve the problem of Chinese education”.

In a statement, he said the “community was fooled by Najib on April Fool’s Day” as no announcement was made to recognise the UEC during a meeting with Dong Zong representatives yesterday.

The three major issues raised by Dong Zong – unconditional recognition of UEC, approval to build four new Chinese independent secondary schools, and review of National Education Blueprint – are issues that have been faced by the community for the past 50 years, Lim pointed out.

“However, Najib, who was once education minister, said ‘Please give me some time. After all, for any change in policy, I need to further market the general concept of this policy for it to be accepted by all quarters’,” said Lim.

DID PAS PRESIDENT JUST TELL AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE?

The delay by the BN in dissolving Parliament to pave the way for the 13th general election could well be because its leaders are consulting a bomoh (witchdoctor), joked PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Hadi: BN could be consulting bomoh on dissolution date

The delay by the BN in dissolving Parliament to pave the way for the 13th general election could well be because its leaders are consulting a bomoh (witchdoctor), joked PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

“While (PAS secretary-general) Mustafa Ali mentioned the possible election dates just now, I believe Umno, which leads BN, will engage a bomoh first,” he laughingly remarked at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

“Because Umno believes in the bomoh setting the election date. If early, its early. Not like the dates Mustafa mentioned just now.”

Hadi said this to reporters after launching the party’s media centre at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters today.

He said PAS and its Pakatan allies were unified and strengthened by their united and principled stand.

The party president said this when asked about Mustafa’s speculation on the possible date for dissolution of Parliament and the likely date for GE13.

In his speech, Mustafa said he expects Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to dissolve Parliament on April 26 or 27, as Najib – who is also finance minister – is to attend the Asean Summit in Brunei on April 24 and 25.

“This is because he has to go as a full-fledged PM, not as caretaker PM, or he won’t be as credible,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: This is not a prank! The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has started an investigation into FMT’s April Fool’s prank which was published yesterday.

Just hours after the publication of the prank article yesterday, the MCMC had sent an e-mail to FMT editor-in-chief K Kabilan, requesting his presence at the MCMC’s investigation unit in Kuala Lumpur to assist in its investigation.

The MCMC is investigating the FMT article under Section 233 of the MCMC Act for “improper use of network facilities or network service, etc” to “make, create or solicit; and initiate the transmission of, any comment, request, suggestion or other communication which is obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.
……….

“I don’t know how our April Fool’s prank can be termed as obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive. Anyone who had read the article in full would have realised the humourous nature of the article.

“We can’t help it if people can’t be funny or refuse to accept humour… maybe we had bruised someone’s ego big time by making him or her a fool.

YouTube announces shutdown in April Fool’s prank

April 1, 2013

YouTube announced yesterday it was going dark for a decade, and that the site was merely an eight-year contest to find the best video.

WASHINGTON: In an elaborate April Fool’s prank, YouTube announced yesterday it was going dark for a decade, and that the site was merely an eight-year contest to find the best video.

“It’s finally time to pick the winner,” YouTube representatives announced in a 3:32 minute video posted on its homepage.

The message was simple: the world’s most popular video-sharing website would close at the end of the day to review all the video submissions it has received over the years, and would announce the best one in 2023.

“We are so close to the end. Tonight at midnight, youtube.com will no longer be accepting entries. After eight amazing years, it is finally time to review everything that has been uploaded to our site and begin the process of selecting a winner,” said Tim Liston, named as “competition director.”

YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar said that “we started YouTube in 2005 as a contest with a simple goal: to find the best video in the world.”

Users have uploaded more than 70 hours every minute to the site, YouTube estimated.

“I encourage everybody to watch as many videos as possible before YouTube deletes everything tonight,” said Antoine Dodson, who became an Internet sensation when a musical version of his 2010 TV interview about a house intrusion was posted on YouTube.

Parliament dissolved!

April 1, 2013

By Loof Lirpa

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak has announced the dissolution of Parliament, to pave the way for the much anticipated 13th general election.

In a brief media statement, Najib said that he had met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last week, and the King had given the consent for the dissolution.

“I hereby announce the dissolution of Parliament to facilitate the holding of the 13th general election and now it is up to the Election Commission to decide on the polling date,” said the prime minister.

Najib’s sudden announcement came as a shock, since speculation had been rife that the dissolution would come into effect in the middle of this month, with the election most probably in May.

The prime minister had come under intense criticism for placing the nation on election mode for more than a year, with talk of a snap polls circulating since early 2011.

He also drew flak when he remarked that he liked it when people speculated about the polls.

Najib, who took over the reins in 2009 following the resignation of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, would be seeking his first mandate as prime minister in the coming elections.

EC and opposition surprised

Contacted later, EC chairman Abdul Aziz Yusof was stunned to learn of the dissolution.

“This comes as a total surprise. There goes my vacation plans,” he said, adding that the commission would hold a press conference soon to announce the dates for nomination and polling.

Abdul Aziz said the EC had a 60-day window period to hold the elections.

Opposition leaders also expressed surprise, with Anwar Ibrahim claiming that Najib had deliberately misled Pakatan Rakyat into thinking that the dissolution would take place later this month.

“This is another conspiracy to stop me from becoming prime minister,” he added.

Commenting on the unprecedented turn of events, FMT editor-in-chief K Kabilan said: “Sorry folks! This is an April Fool’s prank. We just could not resist.”
