A lot of real and digital ink has been spilled in recent weeks about the surprising finding in Israel, where close to 80% of the adult population is vaccinated, that a majority of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are fully vaccinated. The implication often presented from this is that the vaccine doesn’t seem to work anymore in the age of the Delta variant. In this video, I use some simple math to show that the data is actually very consistent with what we would expect from a vaccine that still works, albeit not as well as it did before Delta. I conclude that the data actually supports a scenario in which the Pfizer vaccine, though losing some of its efficacy against mild infection, is still very good a protecting against hospitalization.
