Good afternoon!

We’re here today to bring you the story of Indonesian national, Parti Liyani, who was arrested in 2016 and accused of stealing S$34,000 worth of items from the family of Liew Mun Leong (the Chairman of Changi Airport Group) in Singapore.

Parti packed a suitcase and three large boxes which were to be sent to Indonesia following her departure.

However, the Liew family never shipped the boxes and opened them instead to check the contents.
They claimed in court that they found their personal items inside.
Parti has always maintained that she was sacked for refusing to continue to clean the home of Karl Liew (son of Mr. Liew).

The Liew family's deployment of Parti to Karl Liew's home could have been reported to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).
Today, Parti was cleared of all four theft charges.

Justice Chan Seng Onn said that the Liew family may have had “an improper motive” for filing a police report after fearing that Parti would report them to MOM. pic.twitter.com/3PsSyx11XX
Parti will stand trial for a fifth charge under Section 35 of the Miscellaneous Offences Act for "fraudulently obtaining" 18 items including 6 Ezlink cards.

2/ HOME has journeyed with Parti Liyaani during the course of the investigations, the trial, and appeal. She steadfastly maintained her innocence throughout, stating that the items were either given to her by her employers, had been discarded, or belonged to her.

4/ Such migrant workers are left waiting in a foreign country while investigations are ongoing, w/o any indication of the length of such investigations. In Yani’s case, she was arrested on 2 December 2016, charged on 31 August 2017, and has spent almost four years at our shelter.

6/ During this time, they are also not allowed to leave the country, and have no means of seeing their families back home. Consequently, by the time many migrant workers are presented with charges, they choose to plead guilty even if they are of the view that they are innocent.
