Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam drummed up fears of Malays and Islam being threatened, and went on to call Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad a “mamak” and a “demon” at a Malay rights rally in Perak tonight.

Speaking at the Himpunan Melayu Bangkit (Malays Arise Rally) in Pasir Salak, Lokman questioned the rationale of appointing a non-Muslim attorney-general who will also have the powers to prosecute the Malay rulers.

“The attorney-general has the power to prosecute any yang di-pertua negeri, any sultan and also the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in a special court that was created by that mamak prime minister (bendahara) and demon (si puaka) named Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“We can’t possibly sit quietly, we must rise up, correct?” he told thousands present at the rally (photo).

Lokman, who was BN’s candidate for the recent Sungai Kandis by-election, then led the crowd in chants of “Hidup Melayu” (long live Malays) and “Hancur DAP” (Destroy DAP).

Tommy Thomas was appointed as attorney-general in June.

“Have we (BN) ever appointed a communist sympathiser? Have we ever appointed someone who was close to the communist leader Chin Peng? Never.

“Have we ever, since British rule, appointed a non-Muslim to be the attorney-general?” he said.

For the record, the Alliance government – BN’s predecessor – had appointed Cecil Majella Sheridan, a non-Muslim, as attorney-general from 1959 to 1963.
,

Lokman also touched on the appointment of Richard Malanjum as chief justice, the first East Malaysian to occupy the country’s top judicial post.

“He has a clear record of opposing Islam… Why do I say he opposes Islam? In Malaysia, if a Muslim wants to marry a non-Muslim, the non-Muslim must become a Muslim.

“But when Richard Malanjum married Marina Tiu, who was the daughter of Jaafar Tiu and was born as a Muslim, when she married Malanjum, Malanjum did not become a Muslim.

“Instead, Marina Tiu was allowed to convert out of Islam. In Islam, someone who has become a Muslim cannot convert out of Islam,” he said.

Malaysiakini is currently unable to verify Lokman’s claim about Tiu.

PASIR SALAK, Sept 2 — For a political party that is still finding its feet as a member of the Opposition, Umno drew thousands of Malays to its “Melayu Bangkit” rally at the Kampung Gajah taxi stand here last night.

Organiser and Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman claimed there were 10,000 attendees who came from all over the country, not just Perak, adding that they included non-party members.

The Pasir Salak MP said the gathering was held to show that Malays will unite when their rights, Islam and Malay institutions are under threat or disrespected.

Other Umno leaders present at the gathering were party secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa, its youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and another supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

The crowd started to flocking to the venue as early as 6.30pm and the event started at 8pm.

The peaceful gathering lasted for about three hours.

PASIR SALAK, Aug 25 — The Perhimpuan Melayu Bangkit rally here on September 1 is to remind the Malay community that their special privileges are still being questioned, said Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

“Some influential leaders from various parties are making statements that threaten Malay rights.

Tajuddin further claimed the Malay Rulers and Islam were also under threat, but refused to identify those responsible.

Despite claiming that such “threats” arose after his party’s defeat in the general election, his use of the three issues of race, religion, and royalty is a staple for Umno politicians.

“So, that is the reason why we wanted to have this gathering. We want to protect our rights,” the Pasir Salak MP explained.

When it was pointed out that such privileges and positions were enshrined in the Federal Constitution, he said this did not stop detractors from questioning their purpose.

“The fact that they are complaining and questioning means that they are threatening the status of Malays as Bumiputera despite the law,” Tajuddin claimed.

He asserted that the rally will draw a crowd of 10,000 and will be peaceful.

“They use their power and position to make such statements,” he told Malay Mail.

He cited Human Resource Minister M. Kulasegaran, who allegedly described the Malay community as having migrated to the region, as an example and insisted it was not an isolated incident.
