Seoul on high alert after Jong Nam murder
.

SEOUL: South Korea’s military is on high alert following the murder of of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Seoul believes that North Korea may make some provocative moves against it.
Tensions between the two rival nations rose following Pyongyang’s missile test launch on Feb 12.
The death of Jong Nam at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 in Malaysia on Feb 13 has further aggravated the situation.
South Korea has blamed North Korea for the death of Jong Nam while Pyongyang claims Seoul is colluding in Malaysian investigations into the death of the North Korean.
Seoul’s top naval officer on Tuesday called for watertight vigilance against any possible North Korean provocation.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency quoted Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Um Hyun Seong as saying: “The murder of Kim Jong Nam clearly shows the regime’s brutality and recklessness. The current security situation on the Korean peninsula and the region is at risk.”
He said this when visiting troops on two border islands of Udo and Yeongpyeong in the West Sea.
A day earlier, Defence Minister Han Min Koo had called for readiness against any possible military attacks by the North, Yonhap reported.
South Korea’s acting president, Hwang Kyo Ahn, was reported as saying on Monday that the killing of Jong Nam was “an intolerable crime against humanity and a terrorist act” masterminded by the North Korean regime.
Yonhap reported South Korea’s Ministry of Unification on Tuesday as rejecting North Korea’s claim that it had anything to do with the investigation into Jong Nam’s death.
The ministry said North Korea’s ambassador to Malaysia, Kang Chol, had accused Malaysia of “colluding and playing into the gallery of external forces,” in its probe. This, the ministry said, was an apparent reference to South Korea.

Envoy: M’sian cops threatened suspect’s family at gunpoint, beat his son
.
Diplomatic tension between Malaysia and North Korea appears to be escalating following the murder of Kim Jong-nam last week.
This afternoon, North Korean ambassador Kang Chol accused Malaysian police of threatening the family of a North Korean citizen, and beating up the latter’s son when they raided his condominium in Kuala Lumpur.
During a press conference at the embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the envoy read out a five-page statement.
“Last Friday night, Malaysian plainclothes police raided the condominium of our citizen here in Kuala Lumpur and forcibly arrested him without any warrant or evidence and made it public that they arrested the mastermind before any form of inquiry began.
“They also aired on TV the scene that (the) said person was arrested in fetters. This is a grave human rights abuse.
“They even pointed guns at his family members to threaten their lives and beat his teenage son in the face. This is the human rights abuse that can be seen only in US gang films,” he said.
The hard-hitting statement comes in the wake of Wisma Putra disclosing that Kang Chol would be summoned to explain his remarks that appeared to insinuate that the Malaysian government had something to conceal.

#KimJongNam murder: Women suspects were groomed by suspected spy in China for past 3 months
.
PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – The two women suspected to have murdered North Korean Kim Jong Nam had apparently lived in China for the past three months before their deadly “assignment”.
According to a report by Malaysian Chinese-language newspaper China Press, both Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 29, may not be North Korean agents, but were possibly duped by a spy ring to commit the assassination at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Doan, a Vietnamese national, was arrested on Wednesday at KLIA before she could take a flight while Indonesian national Siti Aisyah was arrested at 2am a day later.
The two women were said to have lived in China for between one and three months to get to know a certain male individual. During this time, they also worked as female escorts, reported China Press.
It reported that the man they befriended was a spy who introduced Doan to the four men, whom police are hunting down in connection with the assassination.
Siti Aisyah got involved when Doan was asked by the man to find a partner to shoot a prank video.
The two women, who knew each other, apparently rehearsed the “spoof” many times and were able to carry out the process proficiently.
The report also said that Siti Aisyah was tasked with using a handkerchief to cover Jong Nam’s face while Doan administered an injection.
The two women have claimed that they had no idea that it would lead to trouble as they thought it was only supposed to be a filming of the prank being carried out.

Daily draws flak over ‘sexy beauty’ assassin report
.

The international media spotlight has once again fallen on Malaysia following the assassination of Kim Jong-nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) 2.
News agencies around the world have been churning out a slew of conspiracy theories over the incident.
However, one local publication chose to focus on the alleged assassin’s undergarments, or lack thereof instead, drawing brickbats on social media.
According to China Press, the suspect was donning a white top and was clearly not wearing a bra, prompting the police to provide her with a cloth to cover herself.
The report also claimed that the authorities could not believe that the “sexy beauty” was an assassin.
“When she was arrested, she was facing more than 10 police personnel. She was calm throughout the arrest and interrogation,” read the report.
As expected, the report courted flak from readers.
On its Facebook page, China Press was criticised for sensationalising the murder in a lurid manner.

UMMC pathology chief puzzled by death

PETALING JAYA: Forensic pathologists suspect that ricin may be involved when a political dissident is fatally poisoned.
.
University Malaya Medical Centre pathology department head Prof Dr K. Nadesan said with ricin, it usually takes one to three days before death occurs.
“The alleged poisoning is quite puzzling in this case because only cyanide can cause such a rapid death, but for cyanide poisoning to happen, it has to be ingested,” he said.
In Jong-nam’s case, local reports said that two women were believed to be involved in splashing his face with liquid poison but some foreign reports had said that he was injected.
Dr Nadesan said his comment was hypothetical and the person who could answer this is the forensic pathologist investigating the case.
He said the pathologist would have to find out whether Jong-nam was really poisoned or had died of a natural cause.
Asked if there are poisons that cannot be detected, Dr Nadesan said most poisons can be detected but the pathologist investigating the case must be sharp.

Slain North Korean always had bodyguards in Malaysia, says friend
PETALING JAYA: The murdered Kim Jong-nam used to enjoy coming to Malaysia but always had bodyguards with him as he feared for his life, says a restaurant owner who knew him.
“I suspect he had a device to jam the CCTVs. Whenever I checked the cameras after he left, there would be nothing,” said Alex Hwang, a South Korean whose restaurant Jong-nam frequented.
“He feared being assassinated, hence he always travelled with bodyguards,” he said.
Hwang said Jong-nam would stay at five-star hotels whenever he was in town.
“Sometimes, he would bring his wife here,” he said, adding that Jong-nam had also brought his Singaporean girlfriend to Malaysia.
Hwang, who is the National Unification Advisory Council (Malaysia) chairman and former president of the Korean Association in Malaysia, said: “There are so many restaurants in town but he preferred Starhill Gallery because of the security there.”

Killing of North Korean: Suspect thought she was playing a prank
Suspect claims four men travelling with her told her to spray Kim Jong Nam with a type of liquid and a woman companion to cover the face with a cloth.
PETALING JAYA: The Vietnamese suspect, nabbed over the assassination of Kim Jong Un’s half brother, revealed her travelling partners had asked her to spray the victim as part of a prank.
“They told me it was a prank. I did not know it was meant to kill him,” Oriental Daily reported the suspect as saying.
Police have identified the suspect arrested as Doan Thi Huong, 29.
The Chinese daily reported that the suspect was travelling with her female companion and four other men. They had come to Malaysia as tourists.
She claimed that as soon as they touched down at klia2, the four men said they wanted to play a prank on one of the passengers.
They then instructed her to spray the victim, Jong Nam, with a type of liquid. Her woman companion covered his face with a handkerchief as instructed.
According to a police source, following the incident, the two women hopped into a taxi and left the airport. The four men made their way to a hotel in Salak Tinggi.
The suspect claimed that when she could not find her companion and the four men, she headed back to the airport the very next day, where she was arrested by police.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Vietnamese identified as one of the two women allegedly responsible for the death of a Korean who is believed to be Kim Jong-Nam, the half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, was arrested by police today.
The woman who is in her 20’s was nabbed at klia2 at about 9am by detectives on duty.
She was apparently staying at a hotel in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi since the death of the Korean and it is being investigated why she had turned up at the klia2 today.
She is among six suspects comprising two women and four men who are being sought after by police in the case.
Sources said the images of the suspects who are believed to be aged between 20 and 50 were captured by closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) at klia2 on Monday morning when the victim died in what is said to be an assassination.

Women trained to seduce … and kill http://dlvr.it/NNHpDd

PETALING JAYA: North Korea has been known to use women as part of its clandestine operations, some of which involve murder.
For example, the now-exiled Kim Hyun-hee was one of many such women involved in the isolated regime’s plots.
She revealed her exploits in an interview with Australia’s ABC News in April 2013.
After eight years of training, she was groomed by North Korean spymasters to conduct the deadly bombing of Korean Air Flight 858, which killed 115 people in 1987.
The attack was planned to deter foreign teams from taking part in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
She was only 25 years old when she and her co-conspirator were captured in Bahrain, both of them biting down on cyanide pills to kill themselves rather than being captured.
She, however, survived and after her defection, now lives in a secret location in South Korea surrounded by bodyguards for fear of North Korean assassins.

World abuzz with why, how and what killed him
PETALING JAYA: The death of Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of North-Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has sparked international speculation over why and how he was killed – and even what killed him.
Global news agencies such as The Channel News Asia, Reuters and CNBC made it their prime news yesterday, reporting about his death in Malaysia, stating that Jong-nam was poisoned at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA) by two women, believed to be North Korean operatives.
News agencies Mail Online and Telegraph reported that Jong-nam was “assassinated” by two women.
The Telegraph said the two women were spies and that they had used poisoned needles to kill Jong-nam.
Mail Online pointed out that Jong-nam’s death is the highest profile death under the Jong-un regime since the execution of the leader’s uncle Jang Song-thaek in December 2013.
