Seized pig bristle paint brushes to be returned if traders comply with labelling ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: Pig bristle paint brushes seized during a mass raid early last month would only be returned to the affected traders if they comply with the labelling ruling, said Domestic, Trade and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

He said the ministry had given a grace period of one month since Feb 9 to allow traders to separate and put labelling on items made from porcine materials.

“The traders must place a label stating that ‘barangan ini diperbuat daripada babi’ (this item is made of pig),” he said.

“If they comply then we will return the items. We have given them a period of one month. If they fail to comply, we will use the seized brushes as evidence to take further action,” he told Dewan Rakyat when responding to an additional question posed by Hee Loy Sian (PKR – Petaling Jaya Selatan) who asked whether the seized pig bristle brushes would be returned to the traders involved during the raid.

Sarawak DAP offers legal aid to pig-hair brush traders

Traders may still face prosecution for mislabelling the products even though the raids on shops have stopped.

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP has offered legal assistance to traders in the state who may be prosecuted for mislabelling pig-bristle paintbrushes even though the domestic trade, cooperatives and consumerism minister has called for a halt to the raids on shops.

Sarawak DAP leader Chong Chieng Jen expressed relief at the call to end the raids that he claimed would “destroy the harmonious social fabric” of Sarawak and cause “ill feelings” among the ethnic groups there.

“Such extremism has no place in Sarawak and we should not allow it.

“Sarawak is built on principles of a secular state and a foundation of tolerance and respect for all races and religions,” he said toda

Shop owners want written directive on non-halal brushes

Geraldine Tong

Stationery shop owners have said they will only start labelling their brushes if they receive official written instructions from the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry.

“If they come out with a letter, then we will follow, but if they don’t then we don’t,” the owner of a stationery shop in Subang Jaya, who only wanted to be identified as Thang, told Malaysiakini today.

She was responding to Minister Hamzah Zainudin, who had earlier said that traders had the responsibility to inform consumers of the nature of their products.

Minister puts end to pig bristle brush raids

Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainudin today confirmed that he has instructed the ministry’s enforcement division to stop conducting raids on shops selling pig bristle brushes.

Hamzah said he had informed the ministry’s enforcement division director Roslan Mahayudin of the decision.

Asked on the reasons why the raids were being halted, Hamzah this had to do with Malaysia’s multi-racial and multi-religious character.

“We must all work towards living in a harmonious society. We shouldn’t play with fire,” he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

He added that the issue had been blown out of proportion by the media and on the internet.

All pork-based products should have ‘logo babi’, says PPIM

Adrian Wong

Not only pig bristle paint brushes, but all porcine-based products should have “logo babi” (pork logo) to avoid confusion among Muslim consumers, Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) said today.

Its president Nadzim Johan claimed that the association had been receiving complaints from Muslim consumers who had accidentally purchased such products.

As such, he urged the government to request the manufacturers to label the products accordingly.

Apart from pig bristle paint brushes, Nadzim added that food products, footwear, kitchen utensils and certain clothing available in the market also contained porcine elements.

“Everything. They should have (pork) logo. We would also be scared if we wear jaket babi (pig-skinned jacket).

“If there is a logo, when they (shops) cheat (consumers), (the government) can take action. If not, then cannot,” he told a press conference today in Kuala Lumpur.

Enforcement officers seize pig bristle brushes in Shah Alam

z1.jpg

The Selangor office of the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry today seized eight paint brushes of various types believed to be made from pig bristles at three hardware stores in the city.

The ministry’s Selangor enforcement chief, Abdul Rosik Yakub, said the seizures were made in an operation against the sale of such brushes without any label at hardware stores in the state.

“Hardware shops are free to sell these brushes but they must be labelled and kept separately to make it clear to consumers, especially Muslims,” he said to reporters.
He said the paint brushes seized from the three premises, at Taman Sri Muda and Kota  Kemuning, did not bear the A913 and A680 codes.

According to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, the A913 and A680 codes on the brushes denote that they are made from pig bristles.

However, he said, the paint brushes seized today were not coded and would therefore be sent for laboratory tests to determine the bristles.
