Did the Gerakan lion refuse to dance for the VVIP guests? If BN cybertroopers can spin, so can others…

Whether the ‘lion’ was peeling oranges or pomelos is not the point

Stephen Ng

COMMENT Gerakan Youth leader Tan Keng Liang is, as usual, in a state of denial as he is good at casting false aspersions on Pakatan Harapan leaders.

Although we have never met, I think Tan is a young and immature Gerakan leader who should not speak to the media too much.

He is known to come out with some outlandish remarks – and I have responded to some – that clearly show that Gerakan is now devoid of good leaders for the future.
.

Why did the video clip go viral?

Tan should ask why the video clip showing a lion apparently refusing to perform in front of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Rosmah Mansor went viral?

Why were people gleeful and took the trouble to even share the video clip, when they saw that the lion seemingly refused to dance?

If what Tan claimed was true that the ‘lion’ was peeling citrus fruits, it no longer matters. Why did Najib and Rosmah not be patient to wait a bit longer? You do not expect to enjoy a two-minute Maggi noodle in just 15 seconds.

It is not only this video clip that has gone viral. I have seen many others including one captured by Astro Awani where Najib said that Petronas was contributing RM26 billion in one particular year; the following year the contribution would be reduced to RM9 billion. In the speech, Najib asked, “What am I going to do with the shortfall of RM15 billion?”

A young boy in Year One would be able to tell that RM26 billion minus RM9 billion is not RM15 billion, but RM17 billion. Therefore, what happened to the RM2 billion? Such miscalculation coming from a finance minister is what shocked a lot of Malaysians who shared the video clip.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak jokes with MCA president Liow Tiong Lai that Gerakan’s VIP table at their open house is bigger than the one at MCA.

Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang schools pro-opposition supporters on the Chinese New Year (CNY) tradition when they claimed the lion dancers refused to put an act for Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

He was hitting on the critics for viralling part of a video showing the lion refused to dance in front of Prime Minister Najib and his wife during the Gerakan Chinese New Year Open house in Kuala Lumpur.

Posting on his Facebook, he said that “It is CNY tradition where the lion dancer presents pomelo to special guests as a symbol to bring prosperity.

“In fact, the lion dancer was peeling pomelo and oranges for Najib and his wife.

“It is unfortunate that some people choose to twist and fabricate lies towards the lion dancers who performed professionally.

“Even Najib personally praised the lion dancers in his Facebook posting.”

He added that there are some irresponsible spins claiming the lion dancer refuses to perform in front of Prime Minister Najib.

“None of the performers are superman. I doubt anyone could have peeled a pomelo and orange in less than 30 seconds.

“If those pro-opposition people can’t understand the Chinese tradition during CNY lion dance performance then please don’t try to tarnish and insult the tradition.”

Gerakan’s ‘Lion’ was peeling a fruit, not protesting

Jan 30, 2017
.

Pro-Mahathir Mohamad political blog OutSyed The Box yesterday shared a video from KiniTV, giving the blogpost a headline which read: ‘Gerakan lion refuses to dance for MO1’.

The original title of the video was ‘VIP table at Gerakan open house bigger, Najib teases Liow’.

In the video, Prime Minister (PM) Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor were attending Gerakan’s Chinese New Year Open House on Saturday, in which it was made up of several short clips of them enjoying the celebration together with Gerakan President Mah Siew Keong and MCA President Liow Tiong Lai, amongst others.

In one of the clips, the group of VIP guests which included Najib and Rosmah, were seen standing in front of a lion which was part of a lion dance performance.

The lion was bowed down on the ground and did not move while the drums were playing. The lion stayed down for a few seconds, after which Najib took to patting the lion’s head.
.

Based on that, in what sounded like mere speculation, OutSyed The Box wrote, “Gerakan lion refuses to dance for MO1. Yes I noticed this too. At first I thought the lion lying down and keeping still was part of the act. But it does not look that way. The lion just stayed down, as though the performance was over.”

Sharing a YouTube link to the KiniTV video, the blog then went on to add: “It looks like a protest. ‘We will not perform for you’.”

A quick check with Mah’s political secretary Ivanpal Singh Grewal found that there was a simple explanation to the whole thing, and it wasn’t a protest.

Ivanpal told Malaysia Outlook that he has seen the clip and explained that the reason the lion was bowed down to the ground was because it was peeling a special fruit.

This, he said, happened after the lion had already danced in front of the VIP guests.
