Using ‘Baby In Car Seat By The Roadside’ – A New Tactic To Lure Motorists?

A message has been circulating of a new tactic thieves and crooks are using to fool their victims.

“While driving on a rural end of the roadway on Thursday morning, I saw an infant car seat on the side of the road with a blanket draped over it,” the motorist wrote.

However, the motorist described it was a blessing in disguise to not bother stopping – as it was a life saver.

“For whatever reason, I did not stop, even though I had all kinds of thoughts running through my head.

“But when I got to my destination, I called the Police and they were going to check it out,” according to the motorist.

The police relayed and warned that gangs are using new tactics, to get women especially to stop their vehicles.

“There is a gang initiation reported by the local Police where gangs are placing a car seat by the road…with a fake baby in it…waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the abandoned baby,” the motorist added.

However, as the news went viral, some Malaysians have pointed out the message is similar to that of which has been debunked by Snopes.com that was circulated in Tennessee – warning of the same methods gangs are using to lure female motorists.

“This late 2009 warning about gangs engaging in a “National Gang Week” scheme of using bloody car seats as lures to trick unsuspecting female motorists out of their cars, then beating and raping them, carries all the hallmarks of numerous other gang-related urban legends.

“In all the years we’ve been tracking this legend, we have not turned up any reports of any gangs (much less simultaneous efforts by gangs all across the country) using car seats as lures to entice motorists out of their vehicles, nor do any of our police contacts recall encountering any such activity,” the site reported.

While the source of these circulated messages are unknown and the legitimacy is unverified, it is certainly an eye-opener for us all not to fall victim of any vicious tactics, and a good reminder to best be safe while driving alone – especially women.

Have these numbers on speed dial, Police and Ambulance: 999 and Fire Brigade: 994 – they will come in handy in any case of emergency.
